Danny/Christina - Giving it a Name

Danny was sitting at his desk, staring at the computer, when he noticed Christina standing in front of him, looking slightly frazzled. He frowned slightly when he saw her, and the frown changed to one of concern.

“You OK, Chris?” he asked.

“Not really,” she said slowly, “Can we talk? Somewhere—” she glanced around the precinct for a second before responding, “—else?”

“Sure,” Danny nodded, before leading her over to one of the empty interrogation rooms, and shutting the door behind them. “What’s going on?”

“We have to talk about yesterday,” she said, the frazzled look returning to her face, and things suddenly got uncomfortable. He didn’t say anything and she continued, “Because we can’t just pretend it didn’t happen, because it did and trying to pretend it didn’t is only going to make things worse, and we’re going to be dwelling on this forever and—”

“Chris, slow down,” Danny said, giving her an easy smile, “You’re gonna get yourself all worked up over nothing.”

“Was it nothing?” she said, “Please tell me it was nothing, and I’ll feel so much better about this whole thing.”

“Well—” Danny paused, trying to figure it out himself, “In the giant scheme of things, maybe?”

“I guess,” Christina shrugged, before pinching her eyes closed and placing a hand to her forehead, “God, I’m not even sure what happened.”

“Neither am I,” Danny admitted.

“You—were covered in slime?” Christina frowned, eyes closed in concentration, “And I was covered in slime—we—we were both slimed. And then—you kissed me—or I kissed you—someone kissed someone.”

Danny nodded in agreement that that was what happened, and then he moved to sit down at one of the empty chairs. He didn’t say anything, and Christina just started talking again.

“So—what does this mean?” she asked, and waited for a response. Danny was silent for a while before speaking up.

“I don’t know.”

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, thinking, “This thing—whatever it is—it doesn’t have anything to do with Brian and Lindsay, right?”

“No,” Danny replied immediately, “At least—not on my end.” He looked up at her, suddenly concerned, “Does it for you?”

“No,” she sighed, “At least—that’s what my gut’s telling me.”

“I’d go with your gut,” he smirked, and she grinned.

“So—what is this?”

“Why does it have to be anything?” he asked, “Why can’t we just say it happened, and move on?”

Thinking about it being anything other than a one-time thing with Christina made him a bit nervous, because he saw Lindsay in her, quite a bit, but she wasn’t. He knew it should probably be the other way around, because he knew Christina first, but he was attracted to Lindsay first. Christina wasn’t Lindsay, though. She was something else entirely, and he wanted that something else. Badly. So maybe he was lying when he said it had nothing to do with Lindsay, but it wasn’t for the reasons she was implying. He didn’t want to get together with her to get back at Lindsay. He just wanted her because of Lindsay.

“Because I need it to be something,” she said, “I feel like I’m spinning out of control here, because I don’t know how to classify this.”

She looked to him for some kind of response or answer. Maybe it wasn’t something she needed so much as wanted. She wanted to know that she didn’t just cause a potentially awkward position for a co-worker of sorts, and she didn’t necessarily want it to go away. She wanted it to be something, not just dismiss it as nothing.

He got up from the table, and walked over to her, “So you want this—us—to be something?”

“Yeah,” she nodded, “I do. I mean, we get along alright, right?”

“Right,” Danny said with a smile, “—it makes sense.”

“It does,” she nodded.

“But I still don’t think we should just—jump into this,” he explained, “We should talk.”

“I agree,” she said, glancing around for a second, “But not here.”

“Grab a beer?” he asked, placing an arm around her shoulders as he led her out.

“We always grab a beer,” she replied, “Besides, I want you alert and aware throughout the entire conversation.”

“Grab dinner?”

“Sounds good,” she nodded.

“You pay for your own?” he said, giving her a look, and she grinned.

“OK,” she sighed, before giving him a wink, “But just this once.”
