“Lindsay?”

Lindsay turned around at the familiar voice in the restaurant. She was on her lunch break, by herself, while everyone else was working a large murder case in Queens. When Mac told her to take a long lunch she was surprised, but then he explained that everyone else was processing the scene, and if they needed her at all, they'd call. She saw Christina and Jess standing behind her and gave them a smile.

“Hi,” she sighed.

“You here by yourself?” Christina asked, and Lindsay nodded. “Mind if we—?”

“Go ahead,” Lindsay sighed, and Jess and Christina slid into the seat.

“You know,” Jess began, “Since you and Danny started going out, we haven’t really had to talk.”

“Talk?” Lindsay frowned, “About what?”

“Well, I’m dating Don,” Jess sighed, “You’re dating Danny—we should make an appointment for some girl talk.”

“Because we all know that they’re talking about us,” Christina sighed, “It’s only fair if we get even.”

“They talk about us?” Lindsay said, a bit amused.

“You know men,” Jess rolled her eyes, “They talk about everything.”

“Good point,” Lindsay nodded, “So—where do you want to start?”

Christina and Jess looked at each other for a second, before Jess gave her a smirk, “Let’s start with the sex and work our way up, shall we?”

“Sounds good to me,” Lindsay laughed.

“I’ll start,” Jess volunteered, “There’s this thing Don does—”

Brian stared at the gaggle of women across the street from him, and kept glancing from them, to his cell phone, and back to them again. He knew that this was a very, very bad sign. Those three women should not be having lunch together without their significant others present. Because then they would get to talking about their boyfriends.

And then would come the looks.

And the hints.

And the teasing.

He really didn’t want to deal with teasing.

There was no way he was going to be able to stop this, not without revealing the fact that he had—kind of sort of followed Christina and Jess when he heard they were going to lunch, because gossip was what he knew would be happening. The real dilemma was in the choice of whether or not to call Danny and Flack and let them know, or keep them in the dark about this. He decided that it might be better to give them a heads up.

“Flack.”

“Hey, Flack. It’s Peluso.”

“DA’s office’s getting a jump on this already?”

“What?” Peluso frowned, “No—it’s not work related.”

“Oh—what’s going on?”

“Your girlfriend is having lunch with mine and Messer’s.”

“And?” Flack frowned.

“Do you not realize the ramifications of having these particular women eating and talking at the same time?”

“They’re gossiping aren’t they?”

“Yes they are.”

“Goddamnit,” Flack shook his head, “I do not need Monroe giving me weird looks all day. Is there anything you can do?”

“Not without blowing my cover.”

“Guess we’re gonna have to grin and bear it, huh?”

“Guess so,” Peluso replied.

“Well—best of luck to you.”

“You as well, my friend. And give Danny a head’s up.”

“I will,” Flack nodded before he hung up.

“Hey, Lindsay,” Flack said as he walked into the room, “Got something?”

Lindsay looked up and gave him a smile. But it wasn’t her usual smile. It was more of a knowing smile, like she knew something about or concerning him, that she found amusing, but he was going to find potentially embarrassing.

“Yeah,” she said. She started going through the evidence, but Flack couldn’t get that look on her face to go away, and he knew that if damn Peluso hadn’t said anything he probably wouldn’t be reading this much into it. But he did, and now Flack was, and if this went badly for him, Peluso was never gonna hear the end of this. He walked out of the lab when Lindsay was done, and ran into Danny as she walked down the hall.

“The women were talking, weren’t they?” Danny asked.

“Apparently they were,” Flack replied, “Peluso called me and said they were having lunch.” Danny nodded.

“I just came from talking about a case with your girlfriend, and she looked like the cat who had swallowed the canary.”

“Did she?” Flack nodded, “Beautiful.”

“She’s not gonna hear the end of this when she gets home, is she?”

“No,” Don replied, shaking his head with a growl, “No, she’s not.”
