Marty was liberally adding cream cheese to the bagel in front of him when Messer walked into the break room. “Pino! Decided to come up and join the land of the living?”
“Even a coroner’s gotta eat,” Marty replied, before turning back to his food. When Danny saw the amount of cream cheese the other man was using and made a face.
“That stuff’s bad for you, you know,” he pointed out, “Give you a heart attack or somethin’.”
“Well, at least I know how I’m gonna go out,” Marty replied before taking the two halves and heading over to the breakroom table. Danny went to work on making his own food, but keeping up the conversation.
“I’m surprised Hammerback even let you take a break. I heard the morgue was backed up pretty bad.”
“Some doctor from Colombia—and that’s the university, not the country—who’s an old friend of Hammerback’s came down to help out, so he sent me to grab a quick something to eat before I starve to death.”
“Who?”
“Who, what?”
“—is the doctor that came down?”
“Peyton Driscoll,” Marty replied.
“Never heard of her.”
“And I wouldn’t have expected you to,” Marty replied with a smirk, and Danny shot him a glare over his shoulder. He went back to fixing his bagel, and was trying to think of something to say back to that, when a mumble, like someone trying to talk with their mouth full came from behind him.
“Didn’t your mother ever teach you any manners, Pino?”
Pino swallowed before speaking, “Sorry. I repeat: Damn.”
Danny turned and gave the man a look, before following his eyes to the hallway. Maka was standing there joking around with Flack, and when Danny turned back to look at Pino, he wasn’t happy.
“Who is that?” Marty asked.
“Detective Kaile Maka,” Danny replied.
“She single?”
“No, she’s not.”
Marty face took on a skeptical look, but he could hear the pissed off tone in Danny’s voice without looking at him, “What? You catch her with the boyfriend before you could make your move.”
“No. I am the boyfriend.”
Marty laughed, “You’re kidding me, right?” He turned and looked at Danny at this point, and the look on his face was all too clear. “You’re not kidding me.”
“No, I’m not.” He continued to stare at Pino with a look that said ‘Maka, mine. You no touch it.’
Marty popped the last of his bagel into his mouth before getting up and tossing the paper plate, “I’d better get back to work.”
“You do that,” Danny replied, turning back to the bagel he was trying to eat. He heard Marty leave, and then another set of footsteps entered the room, and he felt a pair of arms wrap around him from behind.
“Who was that?” she whispered in his ear.
“Marty Pino.”
“The coroner?”
“You’ve heard of him?” he asked, turning slightly so that he was facing her.
“From Lindsay,” Kaile said with a shrug, “Nothing much, just—how he flirts with everything with legs.”
“That he does.”
“He piss you off?”
“No,” he lied, and Kaile gave him a look telling him he was a really sucky liar. “Maybe. A little.”
“Was it about me?”
“Maybe.”
“You know, Danny,” she sighed, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him closer, “Jealousy is kinda cute on you—but don’t wear it too often.”
“I’m not jealous.” Kaile just gave him that look again. “Really!” he protested, before weakening his resolve somewhat, “OK, maybe a little.”
“As I said, kinda cute,” she said leaning in to him slightly, “But not all the time.” He gave her a grin before she kissed him, and as they pulled back, there was the sound of footsteps ending behind them.
“C’mon guys,” a familiar voice whined, “What have I told you about PDA in the lab? None of us wanna see you two going at it.” Kaile and Danny just looked at each other before responding simultaneously.
“Shut up, Flack.”
