Don was ready to start pacing again as he stood outside the court room, waiting for the proceedings that were going on inside to come to a close. He hated the process of it all. It was designed to make it absolutely nerve-wracking for everyone involved, probably more so for the lawyers, but Don was on the same boat in this one too. He really didn’t want to testify in this case. He really, really didn’t want to testify in this case.

Lindsay was sitting next to him, waiting as well. She had testified earlier to the forensic evidence, and while she knew she was in, she wanted to know whether or not Don was, as well as whether or not Regina Bowen was in as well. The whole team had been surprised when they found out that Peluso was going to put her on the stand.

“How can this take so long?” Lindsay sighed, frustrated as she sat down on the bench next to him.

“I don’t know,” Don replied resting his elbows on his knees, “Seems like its taking forever, isn’t it?”

Lindsay gave him a soft smile and a nod. They dropped into silence for a moment, just waiting, when the silence was broken by a third voice.

“Grand Jury came back?” They both looked up and saw Jess and Christina standing there, having just come from their own court appearance. Don gave her a nod, and Lindsay moved over so that Jess could sit down next to him. Christina took a seat on the other side of Lindsay, before turning the chair slightly so that she was facing the group.

“We’re waiting for the verdict,” Lindsay continued, turning to Christina. Jess leaned her head against Don’s shoulder, and took her hand in his.

“You OK?” she asked, and he moved his hand in a so-so fashion.

“I just want this to be over with,” he replied, giving her hand a squeeze. She suddenly shot up when she spotted Steele heading towards them, Stella walking with him.

“Waiting on the Grand Jury?” he asked, and the group there nodded. He glanced down at his watch before turning to Stella, “You mind if we wait a bit for lunch?”

She shook her head no, her and Steele taking a seat across the hallway from the group. They all fell into a light chatter, just trying to fill the air with sound. It was a few long minutes more before another voice was heard.

“What is this, the Peluso fan club?” All heads turned to see Danny standing there, having just come from a court appearance himself. Lindsay gave him a smile, before patting the seat next to her. He went over and sat down, slipping himself into the conversation the two women were having. There were a few more moments of chatter before the doors open, and people started streaming out of the courtroom. They all stopped talking, waiting patiently for Brian and Billy to appear as the crowd dispersed. They both had completely straight faces, but once everyone had disappeared, a giant smile crossed Brian’s face.

“You’re in,” he said, pointing to Lindsay, before turning his finger on Don, “You’re out. Regina Bowen is in.”

Don let out a sigh of relief, his body slumping against the back of the chair. Thank God. They all got up and got ready to go their separate ways, and Steele caught up with Peluso as he was making his way out the door.

“I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how big a risk it is putting Regina Bowen on the stand in front of Sharp. He’s most likely going to tear her apart.”

“I know,” Brian nodded, “But I have a bit more faith in her this time around.”

“Faith in a woman who refused to testify before?”

“Faith in a woman who wants to help her friend, Steele,” Brian corrected, before placing an arm across Christina’s waist, and offering to buy her lunch. Steele watched them go as Stella caught up with him, nudging him slightly in the shoulder.

“C’mon,” she sighed, “You still owe me lunch.”

“You really think we stand a chance on this one, Stella?” he asked as they headed towards their favorite restaurant.”

“The evidence is solid, all Sharp has really got is the lab,” Stella replied.

“But the lab is bad,” Steele reminded her gently.

“True,” she said, “But if Peluso can pull off getting Regina Bowen to testify, I think we stand a pretty good chance.” She hesitated as they arrived at the restaurant, “Why, what do you think?”

“I thought in the beginning that we didn’t stand a shot in hell,” Steele admitted with a smirk, “And I’m going to stand by that thought, because I don’t want to jinx it.”

Jess and Don clinked beer bottles together as they sat in the booth at Sullivan’s, waiting for Danny and Lindsay to show up. She could tell that just by that one bit of news, he looked so much more relaxed and at ease. What Sharp had put him through had caused him a lot of stress, and she was glad that he didn’t have to worry about actually going to trial, and he could actually relax and put the trial in the back of his mind, just like he wanted to. She watched him as he took a swig of his beer, before taking one of her own, and glancing at her watch.

“Where the hell are they?” she asked, glancing around of a sign of the other couple.

“I have a sinking feeling that we may not want to know,” Don smirked, and Jess gave him a look.

“Christina told me they were taking it slow,” she replied, and Don’s smirk turned into a grin.

“Remember when we tried taking it slow?”

She laughed, “We don’t do slow very well, do we?”

“No we don’t,” he nodded, when Danny’s face finally appeared in the doorway of the bar. Don waved him and Lindsay over, and when the two settled into the seat, he turned to Lindsay.

“When does the trial start?”

“Opening statements are in a week,” Lindsay replied, “Pretty soon, this is all gonna be over.”

“Pratt will be on death row, where he belongs, and we can go back to normal,” Danny finished with a nod, before ordering a beer for himself and for Lindsay.

“Hopefully,” Jess replied, “We still got a long way to go before sentencing, Danny.”

Danny gave her a look, before shaking his head in Don’s direction, “Why’d you have to date a lawyer?”

“It could be worse,” Don stated.

“It’s true,” Jess nodded, “At least I’m a prosecutor. I could have been a defense attorney.”

“If that were the case, Rossi,” Danny replied, “We wouldn’t be sitting here right now.”

“We wouldn’t be?” Don said with at frown.

“Yes,” Danny said, “Because if you started dating a defense attorney, I would have to send you on a trip down to Bellevue to have your head checked, make sure you were feeling all right.”

“Not all defense attorneys are scum, Danny,” Lindsay reminded him.

“Fine,” Danny sighed, “In this little hypothetical situation we’ve got going here, are you the one who’s living the high life, or are you barely making ends meet?”

Jess took another drag of her beer and thought about it for a second, “I’m filthy rich.”

“Again, going to Bellevue.”

“Defense attorneys are a necessary evil,” Jess sighed, “It helps maintain the balance that the justice system was built upon.”

“Yeah, but if they’re slippery enough they put murdering bastards like DJ Pratt back on the street,” Danny stated, and Jess nodded.

“That just means the prosecutors have to slip a little faster.”
