Danny and Martin - Hershey Park

Fandom: Without a Trace
Title: Hershey Park
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Characters: Danny Taylor, Martin Fitzgerald, and Vivian Johnson.
Prompt: N/A
Content Warning: N/A
Summary: Martin hates it when Danny insists on driving.
Author's Note: Written for [livejournal.com profile] polkadotsnplaid, who requested an buddy adventure between Danny and Martin. Sorry it took so long to write, but these two really didn't want to cooperate. Anyway, I figured that getting lost while driving would be an adventure, without me traveling too far into the norm of the ridiculous.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of Without a Trace. They're owned by CBS.

Danny and Martin climbed back into the car, getting ready to head back to the city. The search for their missing person had lead them deep into the boondocks of New Jersey, but they had managed to find them while they were still alive. Now, they were just getting ready to head home and finish the rest of the paperwork. While the last part was something they weren’t necessarily looking forward to, there was a nice long drive between them and it, so they weren’t worrying about it quite yet.

“Are you sure you know the way back?” Martin asked as Danny started the car.

Danny rolled his eyes, slightly annoyed, “Yes, Martin, it’s fairly simple. You just hop on the turnpike, get on 287, and ride that all the way into the city.”

“Are you sure?” Martin replied, really not in the mood to get lost with Danny at the wheel.

“Do you doubt my navigational skills, Martin?”

“No, it’s just that I’ve been lost with you driving before, and it wasn’t one of the most pleasant experiences I’ve had to deal with.”

“Well, we’re not going to get lost, because I do know where I’m going.”

“You sure?”

“I’m sure.”

“You’re positive?”

“I am positive.”

“Danny—”

“Trust me, Martin,” Danny cut him off as he started to pull the car away from the scene and towards the dirt road leading towards what was hopefully a paved one, “I know where I’m going.”

“I hope so,” Martin mumbled under his breath.

“Besides,” Danny continued, “This is New Jersey. Everything leads to a highway. How hard could this be?” Martin shot him a look, and he added onto the end, “If I didn’t know where I was going.”

Martin ran a hand over his eyes, and got a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that this was going to be a very long drive.

They had fallen into easy conversation over the course of the drive, and Martin had even seemed to forget that he and Danny were driving in an area they had never been before. That is, until he caught Danny throwing an uneasy glance over his shoulder and a confused look on his face. Martin hesitated for a second, before asking.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Danny replied slowly.

“Danny, it’s not nothing. What’s going on?”

“It’s nothing,” Danny replied strongly, “I just think I missed the turn, that’s all.”

“Think you missed the turn?”

“Yeah, I just missed the turn,” Danny replied, “I’ll just turn around and go back. We’ll be fine.”

“You sure?”

“Martin, damnit, will you stop asking me if I’m sure?” Danny snapped, starting to get a little annoyed, “I’m bet my life on it. All I need to do is turn around, and make the turn, and everything will be fine, alright?”

“Alright,” Martin replied, holding up his hands in surrender, although, in his mind’s eye, he could see the drive suddenly becoming slightly more complicated and longer by the second.

“Danny?”

“Yes, Martin?”

“That sign just said the next exit was for Hershey Park.”

“Yes, it did.”

“Danny?”

“Yes, Martin?”

“Why are we heading in the direction of Hershey Park?”

“I don’t know. I must have made a wrong turn somewhere.”

“Danny?”

“Yes, Martin?”

“Pull over.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m calling Viv to get directions, and then I will be driving.”

“Martin, I made one wrong turn.”

“Yes, Danny, you made one wrong turn, and we wound up in Pennsylvania.”

“I’m sorry!”

“I see that. Pull over.”

It was after hours by the time they arrived, but Vivian was waiting at the office when Danny and Martin got there, still bickering with each other over whether or not Danny actually knew where he was going. She rolled her eyes at the two boys before placing her hands on her hips and staring straight at Danny.

“Hershey Park, Danny?” she sighed, “Was it really that hard to find the turnpike from where we were?”

Danny gave her a sheepish look, “I made a wrong turn.”

“Danny, you made quite a few wrong turns, if you wound up in Hershey Pennsylvania when you were supposed to be heading for New York.”

Danny chose to ignore the smug look that Martin was shooting him, and looked directly at Vivian as he spoke to her, "Well, it's been a long day, and I'm sure we all want to go home and get some rest." He started to turn towards the door when Vivian stopped him.

"Not so fast, Danny," she said, patting the stack of papers that were left there.

"Viv, you can't be serious," Danny whined as he saw the paperwork that was left for him and Martin.

“Better get started, boys,” she sighed as she went to leave, “You’ve got a long night ahead of you.”
