It was late. Really late.
Eric forced his eyes open to see the TV screensaver glowing back at him from it’s position in the front of the room. He wasn’t sure exactly how long he had been asleep, but considering that it had been at least somewhat light outside the last he remembered, it must have been a while. He glanced around briefly, trying to reorient himself with where he was. Erica’s. He felt the warm body curled up against his chest, and after glancing down at his watch and seeing what time it really was, decided that he would get her to bed, and then make his way back to his own.
He was actually pretty proud of himself, for handling the relationship the way they had. He knew if it had been any other situation, he would have taken off a long time ago. His relationships between the end of high school and now had been pretty much wham, bam, thank you ma’am. In fact, the time of Speed’s death, where he was screwing girls he knew only by a screenname, had probably been the lowest point of that period in his life, and he was glad to say that it was over. He was giving an actual relationship a chance, and despite the fact it wasn’t the person he or anyone else for that matter expected him to be with, didn’t make it any less valuable to him. He was really happy that he and Erica had managed to reach the point that they had, and he wasn’t about to intentionally do anything to screw that up yet.
He shifted out from under her as slowly as possible, before scooping her up and carrying her back into the bedroom. He tucked her in, and was getting ready to make his way out, when he felt her hand latch onto his wrist.
“Stay,” she whispered, pulling him back towards her.
“Slow,” he said, coming closer but not close enough.
“I know,” she sighed, “I’m not asking you to stay for that—I just—I want you to stay.”
His gut was telling him to get out. His gut was telling him that if he stayed, it wasn’t going to be just staying. He knew better than that, and he knew himself better than that. It was better if he went back to his own bed, and his own place, and then came back and saw her in the morning.
“I should go,” he whispered.
“Eric—”
“You know that if I stay—”
“I really just want you to stay,” she sighed, “No pressure.”
“There doesn’t have to be pressure,” he murmured, before brushing a quick kiss against her lips, “I really should go.”
“Eric, please,” she said, not letting go of his arm.
He looked at her, startled that she looked almost scared. Now his gut was telling him a completely different story.
“Is everything OK?” he asked, and she shook her head, the look of fear suddenly gone.
“Fine,” she sighed, “I just want you to stay.”
“OK,” he whispered, “I’ll stay.”
He crawled under the covers next to her, and she curled up into his chest, the same position they were in earlier, except a lot less cramped than they were on the couch. He listened as her breathing leveled off and she drifted off to sleep. There was definitely something going on that she wasn’t telling him about.
But he wasn’t going to worry about it right now. He rolled over onto his side and wrapped an arm across her waist, before drifting off to sleep himself.
