Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

- “On My Own” - Les Misérables

She didn’t expect it to feel this weird. True, she had expected it to be a bit unfamiliar, but never weird. But there she was, standing in the middle of the precinct she used to call her own, and she felt like a total stranger. The energy of the people moving around her, the loud conversation in the room, the inside jokes being slung back and forth, she wasn’t part of that anymore. She didn’t think, until that moment, that she had missed it quite as much as she did—but somehow it had happened.

The woman at the front desk had recognized her and after some friendly catch-up told her to go right in. She wandered her way through the desks, surprised she still remembered what path to take finding her way back to her old desk.

It looked different than she remembered it, probably because the person using it was a completely different person. She didn’t value the same things in the same way, she didn’t need the same things. But it was still her desk. It still had that air of familiarity to it, and she brushed her fingers along the corner of it, feeling the memories rush back to her. Whoever had her desk now still stared the space with Danny it seemed like, because the desk across from it was still littered with everything that usually came to mind when it came to Danny: take out containers and half-chewed pens.

“Excuse me?”

The voice came from out of nowhere, and she looked up to see a blond woman with a badge on her belt staring at her as though she was some kind of stalker. The woman snapped her gum before continuing.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Sorry,” she said softly, “This desk—it used to be mine.”

Blond stared at her for a second, before blinking, “Wait, you’re—”

“Hey, Hollywood,” Danny’s voice came over the buzz of the room from somewhere behind Lindsay, “Grab your kit, we got a DOA over on Fifty third and—” his voice stopped when he spotted the woman in front of him. He could only see her back, but his gut told him who it was. “—Montana?”

Lindsay turned around and gave him a smile, “You have no idea how much I missed hearing that.” Danny just stared at her in disbelief, walking towards her slowly before wrapping her in a hug, hesitating only slightly to make sure she was comfortable with it.

Angell wasn’t quite as gentle.

Lindsay and Danny were thrown into the desks next to them when the woman appeared from out of nowhere, practically tackling Lindsay in a hug and taking Danny down with them. “What the hell are you doing here?” she asked, eyes bright with hope.

“I was here on vacation, so I figured I’d drop in and say hi,” Lindsay replied, and she saw the hope dim slightly.

“So you’re not here for your job?” Lindsay shook her head no, and Angell rolled her eyes.

“Blondie has no idea what she’s doing. We need you back!”

“Hey!” ‘Blondie’ sighed, “I’m right here.” She then turned the glare on Danny, “Don’t we have a DB somewhere?”

“Yes, we do,” Danny replied, before turning back to Lindsay, “You and me, catch up later, alright?” Lindsay gave him a nod and he continued, “Good.” As he disappeared, she turned back to Angell.

“Was it really necessary to tackle me, Jen?” Lindsay commented and Angell laughed.

“I got a little over-excited. When Hawkes and I saw you—”

“Hawkes?” Lindsay’s eyes lit up when she saw the soft spoken doctor standing in front of her, a giant smile on his face.

“I wanted to make sure you saw me first,” he said as she pulled him into a hug, “It’s so good to see you, Linds.”

“It’s good to be here,” she sighed, “I didn’t even realize how much I’d missed it.” She glanced around the precinct, “Is Stella or Mac around? Or—” Her voice dropped off in hesitation, and Hawkes gave her a smirk.

“Or Don?” he finished for her and she gave him a shy smile.

“Yeah.”

“Mac’s actually out at a scene right now, but Stella and Flack should be around here—” he glanced around before he spotted the two of them standing in a corner not to far away, talking. “—or right over there.”

Lindsay followed the lines of his eyes just as Don happened to look up from his conversation with Stella and right at her. Their eyes locked, and she knew for the first time in a long time that she was in the right place. It didn’t really matter what was said between them afterwards, or what was going to happen in the future, but right there, in that precinct, she was home.

“Is that—?” Stella began, and Don didn’t look back at her, just nodded slowly, and a giant smile crossed her face. She started walking towards them, and Lindsay met her halfway, the two women wrapping each other in a warm hug.

“It’s so good to see you,” Stella sighed in her ear as she pulled back. Don had caught up with them at this point, and they just looked at each other for a second, somewhat lost in the moment at hand before, Lindsay spoke up herself.

“Hi,” she said softly. The simplest greeting, but all she felt she really needed to say.

“Hi.”

Okay, you really got me so attached to this fic from the get go,that it would be just so cruel of you to just stop here! LoLz!

Btw, love the short interaction b'ween Angell and Lindsay. Too bad we don't get to see that yet on TV. And also love the way you write Lindsay's reaction to seeing Hawkes again.I think that was very sweet. And Danny too.

Now,I'm dying to know what the heck happen between her and Don! =D

Should I hate Blondie? Cuz' I do. It's so cruel to end there. I hope we get more soon.
