Pairing: Danny Messer/Kaile Maka
25_foods Prompt: 006. Brownie Batter
Content Warning: N/A
Summary: Sheldon and Gracie whip up some brownies.
Author's Note: The one idea I couldn't get out of my head was little Gracie, sitting on a stool by a kitchen counter covered in brownie batter. I figured I'd let Hawkes come in for this one, because I don't think I write nearly enough Hawkes.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS. However, any and all original cahracters are mine, and should not be used without my permisson.
“Uncle Shel-don,” Gracie’s sing song voice echoed through the doorway as she ran to greet the man standing there. Hawkes had been roped into baby-sitting Gracie at the last minute, when one of Kaile’s friends suddenly insisted that she have dinner with her. Kaile, unable to talk her way out of it, called him in a panic, and he had agreed without hesitation. He scooped Gracie up into his arms and she gave him a tight hug.
“Hello, Miss Gracie,” he said, “How are you?”
“Good,” she grinned, “Mommy said we could make brownies.”
“Really?” Hawkes said, turning to Kaile as she entered the room, “Did she now?”
“As long as the kitchen is left better than you found it,” Kaile said, more to her daughter than to Hawkes, even though she knew he was going to be doing most of the cleaning anyway.
“We will,” Gracie replied as Hawkes put her down. Kaile gave Hawkes a smile as her daughter darted into the kitchen.
“Thanks for doing this, Sheldon,” she sighed, “I know this was last minute.”
“Anytime,” he replied, “You know I adore Gracie.”
“OK,” she sighed, “You have my cell if you need me. Danny’s in the mountains, and probably won’t pick up, so if you can’t get me, try Mac.”
“No Flack?”
“Don’s with Danny,” Kaile replied, “I gave Mac a heads up. Thanks again, Hawkes.” With that, she breezed out the door, and Sheldon turned his sights on the kitchen. He found Gracie staring at a box of brownie mix.
“Alright, Gracie,” he said, leaning on the counter next to her, “What do we need?”
“We need eggs, and water, and greasy stuff,” she replied, pointing to each picture on the box.
“You mean cooking oil?” he replied, turning to her.
“Yeah. Greasy stuff,” she said, before running off to the fridge to find the eggs.

An hour and a half later, Hawkes was placing the pan of brownie batter in the oven, and Gracie was licking the batter off the beaters. There was also batter all over the counter, as well as various amounts of cooking oil and egg whites. Hawkes, never having made brownies before, hadn’t expected it to be this messy, but he felt that they had done a pretty good job.
“And those should be done in about a half an hour,” Hawkes said to the girl sitting at the counter, and she placed the beaters down, and he could see the batter coating her mouth and hands.
“Well, what do we do while we wait?”
Hawkes studied her for a second, and gave her smile, “Well, first we have to clean you up.”
He slipped his hands under the girls armpits and carried her over to the sink the bathroom, “Alright, scrub up.” He turned on the water for her, and watched and she forcefully stuck her hands under the lukewarm stream, water suddenly turning mud brown. “So, where is everybody today?”
“Alex went camping with Daddy and Uncle Don and the Boy Scouts.” She made a face and Sheldon smirked.
“Don’t like the Boy Scouts?”
“No, boys are gross,” she stated before rubbing her face with her wet hands to get the batter off.
“Hey. That hurts, Gracie.”
“You don’t count,” Gracie replied simply, and Hawkes was a bit taken aback. Gracie didn’t seem to notice and continued, “Mandy’s at a sleepover with her ‘girlfriends’ and Mommy went out with Aunt Cara.” She turned back to Hawkes who had a towel ready for her. “All clean!”
“Alright, go get ready for bed,” he said as he toweled her off.
“Hey, Uncle Sheldon,” she said, “Can you read me a story until the brownies are done?”
“Absolutely,” he replied, “Pick out the one you want and I’ll read it to you.” She flashed him a giant smile before running from the room.
Hawkes gave a sigh as he left the bathroom, and turned to his next project while he waited: conquering the kitchen.

DING!
“The brownies!” Gracie squealed as she ran into the kitchen. She practically bounced at Hawkes’ side as he retrieved the tray from the oven, and placed it on top of the stove to cool.
“Cut them! Cut them! Cut them!” she begged, starting to bounce a little higher.
“If we cut them now, they’ll fall apart,” he replied, remembering the one thing his mother had ever told him about brownies, “We have to wait until they cool.”
“But I have to go to bed soon,” she said, giving him the puppy dog eyes.
“Well, they will still be here n the morning,” Hawkes replied, crouching down to look her in the eye.
“You won’t eat them all?”
“Nope.”
“Pinkie swear?” she said, holding up her pinkie. He locked his own with hers, and the corners of her mouth turned up in a smile.
“Alright, Miss Gracie,” he sighed, “Time to get you to bed.”

Hawkes had just finished cutting the brownies when Kaile’s voice was heard from the front door.
“Hawkes?”
“Hey, Kaile,” he said, stepping out of the kitchen, “How was the dinner with Cara?”
Kaile rolled her eyes, “I don’t know why I agree to do things with that woman. Gracie was good?”
“Exceptional. Although, she did tell me that I don’t count as a boy.”
Kaile laughed, “Well, she is six. She’s hit that stage.”
“Ah.”
“And my kitchen is still in one piece?”
“Yup.”
“Flack took a picture of the ‘before’ once,” Kaile replied with a shudder, “I think he wanted to give me a heart attick.”
“We didn’t get a chance to eat them, so they’re on the counter if you want one.”
“Thanks again, Hawkes,” she replied as he stepped past her towards the door.
“Anytime,” he replied, and she shut the door behind him. She poked her head in on her daughter’s bedroom before heading into the kitchen for a brownie. She picked one up off the place and took a bite. She then pulled back immediately, a look of surprise and disgust crossing her face.
Apparently, the one thing Sheldon Hawkes couldn’t do, was cook.

ROFL. What kind of shape will they be in when they get back?

Great final line! Oddly enough, I was having a debate with myself last night over whether Hawkes would be a good cook or not ... Then again, cooking with the aid of a six-year-old is not always conducive to good cooking. Very cute.

and danny and don are going to realize on this trip, that they can't keep up with the teenagers like they used to. it should be highly amusing, should i choose to write it.
