They had started out talking about football. It was an easy enough topic, something they were both interested in, and eventually it turned into just them filling the air with noise so they could pass the time, but Lindsay was more comfortable with that than what both of them probably wanted to talk about. But they couldn’t talk about nothing forever, so when they finally ran out of things to say they just fidgeted with their fingers trying to come up with the next topic of conversation.

“I don’t think the Giants starting line-up is really want we were supposed to be talking about, Lindsay,” Danny said, smirking at her over the mostly empty pizza pan.

She shrugged, “Was good conversation.”

“Very true,” Danny nodded, “But still not we were supposed to be talking about.”

She took a deep breath before speaking, “What do you want me to say, Danny? That I know what I want? Because I don’t.”

“I’m not saying that,” Danny replied, “It just looks like to me that we’re both screwing with each other’s heads and we’re not even realizing it.”

Lindsay looked up at that, “I want this but—I’m not sure I want to deal with all the risks that come with it.”

“Risks, what risks?” he asked, and she shot him a look, “OK, I know what risks, but what makes you think that I’ll actually do that to you?”

“There are any number of clichés that could answer that one, Danny,” she said, shaking her head as she did so, “But let’s just say your reputation precedes you.”

“Those girls weren’t you, Lindsay.”

‘How many times have I heard that one before’ read the look on her face, and he knew that she knew he was only feeding her lines, and that he should have know better before he tried to get one of those to work.

“It’s the truth,” he tried, and the look only deepened, “I’m just lookin for a shot here, Linds. I think there’s something here, I just don’t know the right way to go about it, because you’re not like girls I dated before. I—” he hesitated for a second, before that devilish grin stretched across his face, “—I don’t know what I’m doing.”

She chuckled across from him, before looking down and speaking more candidly that she realized she probably should, “I don’t want to get hurt, Danny.”

“I can’t promise you that I won’t,” Danny stated seriously, “Cuz I do tend to fuck things up. Quite royally.”

Lindsay didn’t say anything. She hadn’t expected this. She expected him to promise that he would never hurt her, that he wasn’t that kind of guy. But he didn’t. And she waited patiently for what he would say next.

“But I’m gonna try my hardest Linds,” he said, looking at her, and the sincerity she saw there amazed her. She had never seen that kind of thing from him before, and on one hand it scared her, but on the other hand, she knew that he meant it, and it was comforting. It was nice knowing that he was going to try.

“OK,” she said.

“OK? OK to what?” he asked, somewhat confused.

“For right now,” she began, “OK, I understand where you’re coming from. As for after that—”

“If you say ‘I don’t know’ one more time, I will get up and leave right now,” Danny said, a dead serious look on his face and Lindsay laughed.

“I’ll need some time.”

“So are you saying we could take this slow?” Danny asked, hope in his eyes.

“Yeah,” she nodded, “We could take this slow.”

“Good,” he said, before getting up, “C’mon, it’s late. Let’s get outta here.”

“OK.”

“This case is going to kill me,” Brian complained as he and Christina Finn walked to her apartment door. She turned to him and gave him a look.

“It better not,” she teased, “I kinda like you.”

He gave her a grin, “If I die, sue Steele for giving me the stupid case.”

“You fought tooth and nail for it,” Christina reminded him, and he blinked for a second before continuing.

“Oh yeah,” he laughed, “I did. Well, if I’m still alive when this is all over, remind me to never take a case against Jackson Sharp again.”

“Note taken,” she replied until they finally reached her door at the end, and he wrapped his arms around her waist, “Wanna come in?” she asked.

“I better not,” he sighed, “I have to be in court in the morning.”

“And that’s stopped you before?” she said, giving him a smirk.

“OK, I have to be in court in the morning to try and keep Flack out of court many mornings from now,” he paused when she brushed a soft kiss against his lips, “I have to be at the top of my game.” He leaned into her when the kisses became deeper bringing one hand up to cup her head, and holding her closer to him.

“It’s a shame,” Christina sighed as the kiss broke.

“Yeah,” Brian nodded, “But I’m thinking that I might be able to stay. At least for a little while.” He leaned back into her lips again, pressing her against the door, but she pushed back against him.

“What about Flack?”

“What about him?”

“I thought there was something about court,” she murmured between kisses, “And many mornings—and all that.”

“It can wait.”

“Wait for what?” she laughed.

“I dunno,” he grinned against her, before she pulled back from him and gave him a smile.

“I think you should go home, Brian,” she said, before unlocking the door behind her. She stepped inside and gave him one last smile. “Goodnight, Brian.”

After the door closed, Brian stared at it for a second, before turning and continuing to walk down the hallway. He hated it when she was right.
