Sofia wasn’t Stella.

That much was clear from the get-go. They had different approaches to everything from crime scenes to office relations. Where Stella was talkative and animated, Sofia was quiet and reserved. Sofia didn’t go off on tangents, she didn’t poke good natured fun at him, she wasn’t the woman he had worked side-by-side with for the past fourteen years. He didn’t trust her the same way he trusted Stella, and while he knew that she was a good cop—it was going to take a little bit longer before he loosened up around her, and started to relax a little. If that ever happened at all.

He knew that Sofia could feel how awkward things were, and he felt bad about that, but he wasn’t sure what more he could do in order to change them. He needed time to adjust to working with someone knew, and it wasn’t as though he could just turn on a switch and suddenly everything would be alright again. He never could.

He wasn’t aware of how uncomfortable Sofia was, though, until he was walking by the locker room and overheard a conversation between her and Danny.

“—is he always this difficult to work with?”

“Just gotta give him a little time. He and Stella were really close.”

“I understand that,” she sighed. “But I don’t know how much longer I should expect to be judged by the Stella standard. I’m not going to be able to automatically walk onto a crime scene and be able to read his mind, Danny.”

“Hey, hey—just give it a little time alright. Mac’s old. He doesn’t adjust as easily as the rest of us.”

Mac could hear the smirk on Danny’s face, and knew the bit about him being old was a joke, but he knew the last point Danny made was the truth. He was taking the change the labs had gone under recently harder than he should have, but how else should he take it? His partner of fourteen years transferred completely across the country, and he was now forced to adjust to someone new. It wasn’t something that was easy on him. But he knew that he had to at least try—it wasn’t worth the risk of Sofia feeling that he didn’t trust her, and, in return, not trusting him.

He was heading out for the night when he spotted Sofia sitting on the bench outside the lab, looking up at the sky. She seemed to be alone, and he approached her slowly, placing a hand on her shoulder gently to get her attention. She jumped as she turned to face him, but she relaxed once she saw who it was. “Mac!”

“I’m sorry,” he said slowly, giving her a small smile. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“It’s alright,” she said, returning the smile thinly.

“May I?” he asked, gesturing to the bench next to her. She looked up and him before nodding slowly, moving to the side so that he could sit. He did, and didn’t say much—just sat next to her, following her to where her eyes had been headed. He was surprised to find that he could actually see through the clouds and see some sky. “The stars are out.”

She nodded, her smile widening slightly. “It’s always so clear out in Vegas—I’d missed looking at them. Danny was taking a while with some evidence, so I figured I’d wait out here.”

“Do you miss it? Vegas?”

“Sometimes. I don’t miss the way the department treated me.”

“You’re a good CSI—things should have been handled better.”

Sofia looked at him in surprise, staring for a second before nodding. “—Thank you, Mac.”

Mac dropped off into silence again before speaking up, looking down at his hands. “I know I haven’t exactly been the best partner to work with lately, and for that I’m sorry,” he said slowly. “I just—Stella and I worked together for a long time.”

“I understand, Mac,” she said with a nod. “Really.”

“I just don’t want you to think I don’t trust you.”

“I don’t,” she said slowly, and he gave her a look. “I did. At first. But not anymore. I had some adjusting to do myself.”

“I see.”

She nodded slowly, for a minute, before looking back up at the stars. “You know—Danny is still going to be a while. If you don’t have anywhere to be, we could sit?” She paused, trying to gauge his reaction. “Talk? Try and get to know each other better?”

Mac paused for a minute, eyes still down at his hands, before looking up at her again, giving her a small smile. “I’d like that.”

“Good,” she said with a nod, her eyes drifting upwards again. “Good.”
