Foreman hadn’t been home in eight years, but for some reason, he decided to come home for Mother’s Day. Maybe it was his parents coming to see him in Princeton, showing him that his mother didn’t have much long left before she started taking a turn for the worse, he wasn’t really sure. But for some reason, he had a very strong feeling that his mother should have a son home with her on Mother’s Day, and since Marcus wasn’t going to pull through on that particular promise, he was going to have to do it himself.

So he went and did the son-like things: bought her flowers and a card, got dressed in his best, and showed up on the front door step of the house he hadn’t stood in front of in what seemed like the longest time. Everything had changed so much since he had been back in the old neighborhood, and not all of it for the better, but the house itself was still the same. A few things had been touched up here and there, but otherwise—it looked just like he remembered it. Once he was let in, he found the inside looked the same as well. Same furniture, same knick knacks sitting on the mantle and the old stereo. The house hadn’t changed much at all, but for some reason the way he looked at it had.

Alicia was in good spirits today, decked out in her Sunday best, aware that it was Mother’s Day, but Foreman wasn’t sure which Mother’s Day she remembered it being. He could see in her eyes that she didn’t really know who he was, but he wanted to know how far back she was gone today, and he wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to get an answer.

He was sitting on the living room couch with a cup of coffee when she came in and settled down next to him, an old faded piece of paper in her hand. She took his hand in hers before passing the piece of paper to him, urging him to read it.

“My little boy, Eric, made it for me for Mother’s Day,” she replied, giving him a bright smile and watching him as he flipped the paper open. He studied the sheet for a minute, remembering the day in school when he wrote this. He was either in second or third grade—and he remembered the teacher writing the poem up on the board for them copy down as a letter for their mothers for Mother’s Day. He could see the creases in the paper from wear, and the construction paper was so old it was turning yellow, but the words were just dark enough to be legible. He smiled slightly, before looking up at her and the beaming smile on her face.

“Isn’t that beautiful?” she sighed, taking the letter back from him, “To think, he made that all for me. He’s a smart one too, my Eric. Gonna grow up to be a millionaire or something some day.”

“I’m sure,” he nodded, amazed at how she seemed so pulled together, unlike some Alzheimer patients he’s seen, yet on the inside, her brain is still falling apart. She gave him a smile, and his hand a squeeze, before speaking again.

“Now—why are you with your own mother today?” she asked with a sly smile, “I’m sure she wasn’t thrilled to have you spending it with someone else’s mother.”

“I don’t think so,” Foreman replied kindly, squeezing her hand back, “I think she’s glad I’m keeping you company.”

This was extremely well written, and I loved the part where she asked why Foreman wasn't with his own mother and his response to that.
