Flack/Stella - Chivalry is Dead (2/2)

Fandom: CSI:NY
Title: Chivalry is Dead (2/2)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Pairing Don Flack/Stella Bonasera
[livejournal.com profile] alphabetasoup Prompt: T is for Touched
Content Warning: N/A
Summary: Is chivalry really dead?
Author's Note: Also used the prompt Sheldon Hawkes / Evan Zao / chivalry is dead. OK, the second part that came before the first part. If that makes any sense.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.

“I’d have to disagree with you on that one, Evan,” Sheldon Hawkes said as he sat across from his fellow coroner in the breakroom, “Chivalry is not dead.”

“You may be the exception to that, Hawkes,” Evan Zao replied, chewing thoughtfully on his food, “But most single men today treat women like sex objects to be used then thrown away again. The media is desensitizing them to the way things should be done. There’s no romantic gestures, no fairy-tale like moments anymore. And then they wonder why their girlfriends are mad at them.”

“I still disagree,” Hawkes replied, “Men today are completely capable of romantic gestures. It’s just whether or not they choose to develop that skill.”

“And most of them choose not to,” Evan replied, “Have you seen one bouquet of flowers landing on a female detective’s desk at all today? It’s Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year, and not even a single flower, not even a card floating around the lab.”

Jane Parsons walked into the room at this point, and gave both of the men a smile. “Happy Valentine’s Day, boys,” she said, before moving over to the refrigerator.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Hawkes replied, “Jane, maybe you can settle something for us, Evan and I are having a bit of a debate.”

“Oh?” she frowned, “About what?”

“Whether or not chivalry is dead,” Zao replied quickly, “Hawkes thinks that chivalry is still alive and kicking in the males of our species, while I think it’s, sadly, a lost art.”

Jane thought about it for a second, before shaking her head with a smile, “No. Chivalry’s not dead.”

“Now is this from personal expierence?” Zao asked, “Or just in general.”

“Come with me,” she nodded towards the door, before getting up from the table.

They were standing around the corner from Stella’s office, and they could see the large bouquet of red roses sitting on her desk. “Detective Flack leaves those on her desk every year on Valentine’s Day.”

“Flack?” Hawkes frowned, more unbelieving than he would have liked, “How do you know?”

“I caught him one year,” she said, with a smile, “He blushed and stumbled over it for a second before he asked me not to tell anyone. He never leaves a card, or some other gift, just the flowers.”

“How do you know these are still from Flack?” Zao replied, “Could be from Mac, or Danny—”

“To Danny, chivalry really is dead,” Jane said flatly, “Mac gets her chocolate every year, not flowers, and as for another boyfriend, Stella doesn’t like it when they send her gifts at work. Likes to keep the personal and the professional separate. Those flowers are from Flack.”

Hawkes crossed his arms in front of his chest and studied Jane hard, “You’re more in tune with the office grapevine than everybody thinks.”

“I usually keep it to myself,” she said with a smile. She then turned abruptly towards the group as Flack and Stella came walking down the hallway, talking to each other.

“—don’t have to keep doing that, Flack,” Stella said, her voice low as she walked past them, “I mean, I love them, but—”

“I like to,” Flack cut her off, “I know you like the flowers, and I like giving them to you. That’s all.”

“I really do appreci—” Stella’s voice dropped off as the two continued moving towards the other end of the lab. Zao looked at the flowers on Stella’s desk and nodded.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” he whispered, “Maybe chivalry isn’t dead.”

“Maybe not,” Hawkes replied with a smug grin.

“Maybe,” Zao continued, “I still say it’s been mortally wounded though.”
