Flack/Stella - Elaborate Lives

Fandom: CSI:NY
Title: Elaborate Lives
Author: Me!
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Don Flack/Stella Bonasera, mentions of Aiden Burn
Prompt: N/A
Summary: Life is so much easier without so many complications. Flack has to get something off his chest. Post-ep for "Til Death to We Part." The song is "Elaborate Lives" from Aida
AN: This is going to be part of an AU i created for my FlackStella-ness and if you want to read the other post-ep drabbles (there's one for "All Access" and "Charge of this Post") go here. This is also inspired by a prompt i got from Ragna's prompt generator (have i mentioned i'm in love with this thing?) Don Flack Jr. / Stella Bonasera / unresolved issues. It just fit right in.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. Not even the song.

We all lead such elaborate lives
Wild ambitions in our sights
How an affair of the heart survives
Days apart and hurried nights

She wasn’t sure what drove him to her front door in the middle of the night. She didn’t even know how he knew where she lived. But somehow he did, and he was standing at her front door, eyes wild, the look on his face, concerning her to no end.

“Flack?”

“Why does everything have to be so fuckin complicated?” he asked, point blank. No ‘Hey, Stell, sorry to bother you,’ no ‘look, I know it’s late but—” Just that question. And she was concerned. Things had been slightly choppy between them lately, after the Amadori case, and although he had apologized for it, things hadn’t quite snapped back to the way they were. Stella wanted that back, but she didn’t think him showing up on her doorstep at two AM was the way for things to go.

Not that she was going to turn him away. She probably figured it had something to do with Aiden, and she would let him talk to her, and he would leave and it would be done.

“Wanna come in?” she asked, and he did.

Seems quite unbelievable to me
I don’t want to live like that
Seems quite unbelievable to me
I don’t want to love like that
I just want our time to be
Slower and gentler, wiser, free

“Cup of coffee?” she offered, and he nodded, watching her bustle around her kitchen. He was well aware of what time it was, and what he was doing, but he couldn’t think of anything else to do. He wanted to, no scratch that, needed to get this off his chest, and if he didn’t do it sometime soon, he knew it would slip out at the completely wrong time, and he would be screwed.

She handed him the steaming mug, and sat down next to him, “Now what’s so complicated?”

“Life. In general.”

“Anything slightly more specific that you wanted to talk about?”

“Love, I guess.”

Ahhh. Definitely Aiden. Stella saw the way the two of them flirted with each other, and knew that they both had it worse than they would care to admit. But then again, Flack had a pretty easy relationship with every woman he worked with. But definitely more so with Aiden. At least, from her point of view.

“I just wish things were easier,” he replied, “You didn’t have to worry about what people, or you co-workers, or everyone else would feel if you just came out and said what you felt.”

We all live in extravagant times
Playing games we can’t all win
Unintended emotional crimes
Take some out, take others in

“Those are the times we live in. Everything has to be complicated and dramatic. And if it didn’t, it wouldn’t be good television.”

Flack chuckled to himself, and Stella smiled. “I wish we didn’t have to play these stupid games in order to get what we want.”

“You want everything just handed to you, Flack?”

“No,” he shook his head, “I just want to know what someone is thinking before I go and say something stupid. I don’t want to beat around the bush.”

“You just want everything to be straight forward,” Stella sighed, “So that everyone knows where everyone is going and no one gets hurt.”

“Exactly,” Flack replied. She had never seen him in this much turmoil before. Even before, when they were together, she had never seen him this torn up over something. Aiden must have really gotten to him.

I’m so tired of all we’re going through
I don’t want to live like that
I’m so tired of all we’re going through
I don’t want to love like that
I just want to be with you
Now and forever, peaceful, true

“I’m just tired of playing games,” he sighed, collapsing against the back of her couch, “I just want to be able to live my life without thinking everyone else has ulterior motives.”

“Is this about a girl, Flack?” she asked, a slight teasing tone to her voice.

“Maybe,” he replied, knowing she couldn’t possibly know what he was getting at.

“Just tell her, straight out, how you feel and what you want,” Stella replied, “That way, she can do the same, and both of you will be on the same page.”

“Really think I should?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Fine. Stella, all I really want is you. No games, no complications. Just you.”

This may not be the moment
To tell you face to face
But I could wait forever
For the perfect time and place

Stella froze. That was not the answer she had expected. Not at all.

“I know this is neither the time nor the place to be telling you this, but I have to say something. Finding the perfect opportunity to tell you was probably never going to happen.”

“Don,” she shook her head, “How long?”

“I never wanted you to leave.”

We all lead such elaborate lives
We don’t know whose words are true
Strangers, lovers, husbands, wives
Hard to know who’s loving who

“Us being who we are makes things complicated,” she stated, and he nodded.

“I know,” he replied, “Trust me. I know.”

“Then why?” she frowned.

“I’m just following your advice,” he replied, “There were so many things left unresolved between us I had to do something. Now it’s out there. Your turn.”

Too many choices tear us apart
I don’t want to live like that
Too many choices tear us apart
I don’t want to love like that

“Too many complications, Don,” she replied, shaking her head.

“I know,” he replied, before getting up. He gave her a quick kiss on the forehead, before heading out the door, “I just had to say something.”

She watched him leave, and knew that anything she had long since buried for him had just been dug up, jumbled around, and spat back out again.

Damn him.

I just want to touch your heart
May this confession be the start

THE END

Wow. I really like this. I also love how Stella just assumed it was about Aiden (if I hadn't read your header, I'd have thought the same thing) but it still surprised me when he said it. Managing that was great.
