Author's Note: Part of my new, shiny series for these two, Back Again. Yes, it's the same title as the fic, but that's not the point. Anyway, my Lindsay!muse came back, and I kinda missed her. She wanted to do this, so I let her.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI:NY or Conviction. They're owned by CBS and NBC. However, any and all original characters are mine, so please don't use them without my permission.

She first saw him at Starbucks.

She was a bit shocked when she saw him, and she almost didn’t think anything of seeing him. He had been gone long enough that he had been pushed to the back of her mind, but not completely. She hadn’t heard that he was back in town—something she was pretty sure she should have known about. At first she did a double take, not really sure if it had been him, but there he was, shaking sugar packets against the side of his cup before ripping off the tops and pouring them in. Once she was sure it was him, she approached him slowly, not really sure what to say to him, so only speaking when she got close enough.

“Brian?”

He recognized her voice from the moment she spoke. She could tell by the way he straightened at the sound of his name, and the apologetic smile on his face when he finally turned to face her. It was the same smile he had given her before he had told her he was being transferred to Los Angeles. Which was right after he had just confessed to everyone in the middle of a hostage situation that he was in love with Christina Finn. It hadn’t been one of the better moments in their relationship. She didn’t even know why she had come over to talk to him—this seemed like a situation she would have wanted to avoid, but for some reason—she had bridged the gap.

“Lindsay—hi.”

She wanted to hug him. It hadn’t been love between them, she knew that. And she didn’t bear any hard feelings. She’d like to still consider him a friend. And she was almost positive that the appropriate thing to do would have been to hug him, but for some reason, it didn’t feel right. As much as she wanted to be, they weren’t quite old friends yet. Not enough time had passed to give them that feel. Instead, there was an awkward silence, in which she tried to think of something to say—something she probably should have thought of before she came over to him.

“I like the hair,” he said after a moment, and she grinned shyly, her hand wandering up to play with the ends of the short bob.

“Yeah, I—I figured it was time for a change.”

“Looks good on you,” he nodded.

“So—” she sighed, dropping her hand and starting to play with her fingers. “—I thought—” She took a deep breath, closing her eyes and starting over. “How was LA?”

“LA was good—but not for me.” He shrugged, looking back down at his coffee again. “Too much sun.”

She nodded. “You’re back for good then? As in you’re working here too?”

“Yeah,” he nodded. “McCoy is sticking me in night court for a while, at least until he can find a place for me, but other than that—”

“You’re back,” she finished.

“I’m back,” he repeated.

“Good,” she nodded, rubbing her arms slightly. She could feel the awkwardness coming again, and she sighed after a minute, before giving him a small smile. “Well—it was good seeing you.”

“You too,” Brian nodded. She turned to walk away, only managing to make it halfway around before she felt his hand on her arm. “Lindsay, wait.”

She turned back to him again, waiting to see what he needed to say. She didn’t really want to stay in this awkward moment any more than she already had, but she wanted to hear what he wanted to tell her. It had to have been important, he wouldn’t have stopped her otherwise—he would have just let her go. She watched as he hesitated a minute, watching her face as though he was looking for something before speaking again.

“I don’t have to start working nights for a few days. Would you, maybe, want to grab a drink or something? Catch up?”

She hesitated as well, thinking about the possible stupid things she could do with alcohol and Brian in the same situation. She remembers the last stupid thing she had done in the same situation, and look how well that had turned out for her. But she also really wanted to get rid of the awkwardness between them. She really wanted for them to be friends. After all, it was very likely that they were going to be working together now, and they needed things to go smoothly. She took a deep breath and nodded, giving him a smile and praying that she didn’t regret this.

“I’d like that.”

He smiled back at her. “Great. Tomorrow night, then? I’ll meet you at the precinct?”

“I’ll be there,” she nodded.

“Good,” he nodded before he finally let her go. “I’ll see you then.”

She nodded as well, letting out that breath she’d been holding. “See you then.”

***

Lindsay had just finished changing into something dressier than what she had worn to work. She didn’t know where he was taking her, but she figured it was better to be over dressed than under dressed. She was double checking her make-up in the mirror when she heard a low whistle from somewhere near her. She turned and saw Danny standing in the doorway of the locker room.

“Lookin’ good, Montana,” he grinned. “Goin’ out tonight?”

She nodded with a small smile. “Brian and I are going for a drink to catch up.”

Danny frowned slightly. “Brian Peluso? He’s back in town?”

She nodded again. “We ran into each other yesterday.”

“I didn’t know that. Is he back with Homicide?”

“Doesn’t know yet. He said McCoy’s sticking him in night court until they can figure out a place for him.”

“Huh,” Danny nodded. “And you’re goin’ out with him?”

“Yeah,” she sighed, reaching for her bag, and as she walked past him he caught her arm. “Now, don’t take this the wrong way or anything—”

She raised an amused eyebrow at him, and waited for him to finish. Things between them had fizzled out pretty quickly. It took long enough to keep things from being awkward between them at work, but not so long as that anyone at work noticed. She and Danny were content to be friends and leave it at that. She found it interesting that he was choosing to play the friend card now, though.

“—I just—do you really think it’s the right thing, for you to be goin’ out with him again? After what happened last time?”

“It’s just a drink, Danny,” she sighed. “I don’t—I’m not planning on going there again. Not right now, anyway.”

“Yeah, but—wasn’t ‘just a drink’ how you got into this thing with him in the first place?”

“Look, I know it’s not exactly the safest thing in the world to be doing—but we need to at least be friends. We’re just going to talk this time. Nothing else.”

“Just seems like things with you two tend to go around in circles.”

“Well, I hope I’m a little bit wiser this time around,” she sighed, before turning to him with a smile. “Look, I know you’re concerned, and it’s sweet—but I’ll be fine, OK?”

“OK,” he nodded, before turning and spotting Brian standing in the lobby. “Have fun.”

“I will,” she nodded, giving his arm a squeeze before moving to join Brian in the lobby. She looked up at him with a wide smile. “Hey.”

“Hey,” he returned the smile. “You look great.”

“Thanks,” she said, her head dropping as the smile became more shy. She slipped her hands in her pockets, before looking up at him. “So—ready to go?”

“Yeah,” he nodded. “Let’s go.”
