“Can we go home yet?” Colby asked.

“Do you whine about everything?” Christina frowned, turning away from the vendor for a second to give him a look.

“Well, when you were talking about a first date, I didn’t think you’d pick a place that smelt like animal shit,” he said, giving her a look.

“Don’t like magicians, don’t like the zoo,” she sighed shaking her head and wandering over to him, two ice cream cones in hand. “You, Colby Granger, are impossible to please.”

“It’s not that I don’t like zoos,” he said, taking the cone from her and giving it a lick. “I was just thinking more on the lines of dinner and a movie.”

“Well, I was thinking we could spice things up a little. You know, not every major city has a zoo like this so close at hand. Even though it’s kind of bad for the animals—all the pollution and stuff.”

Colby fell silent for a while, following her as she wandered through the various exhibits and then stopped with her in front of the elephant cage. She glanced back at him after a minute and rolled her eyes. “C’mon Granger—you’re getting back to nature.”

“I hate nature.”

“You know, if you’re still doing that stupid annoying thing, it’s not working,” she sighed, licking at her ice cream. “I have a very high tolerance.”

“I still don’t believe that.”

“You’ve met Peluso, haven’t you?”

He grinned at her, “Yeah, well, I’m sure I could top him any day.”

“So sure about that?”

“Pretty positive.”

“He’s a pretty good kisser too,” Christina said, off the cuff.

Colby turned, giving her a look, “If that’s some devious little ploy to make sure I kiss you at the end of the night, I’m afraid you’ll be very disappointed. I don’t kiss on the first date.”

“Oh, I’m sure you do,” Christina said, shaking her head.

“What makes you so sure?”

“First of all—I refuse to believe there isn’t a man who won’t kiss a woman he’s interested in on the first date,” she said, giving him a look. “And secondly—Peluso didn’t even wait for the first date. We went on our first date because he kissed me.”

The look on his face changed, and she smirked back at him as she turned around and headed for the one of the other cages. She hadn’t had this much fun teasing a guy in a long time. She knew that Colby wasn’t going to be thrilled with the idea of going to the zoo—she didn’t know how she knew, but she did—but he would go anyway, because he liked her. And she liked him too. But after everything that went down between her and Peluso, she wasn’t sure she wanted to get back into a relationship kind of setting again. She knew she shouldn’t be doing what she was doing, but she was making sure that he really wanted to put up with her. Guys like that were hard to find, especially ones that were getting back on a plane across the country in a few days.

“Seriously, Christina,” he sighed, catching up with her. “Why did you want to come to the zoo?”

“I like zoos,” she replied.

“That’s all?” he frowned.

“That, and I heard they had a merry-go-round.”

“If you wanted a merry-go-round, we could have gone to Coney Island.”

“If it was true, this was going to be so much closer and less traffic.”

“Gotcha—but once you saw they didn’t have one, why didn’t you say so and have us head up there? I mean, one wasn’t going to magically appear out of thin air.”

“As I said, I like zoos,” she said, giving him a small smirk. “And I think the elephants are cute.”

Colby rolled his eyes slightly, and she gave him a look. “Why are you so opposed to having this be considered a date?”

“Because following you around a zoo all day isn’t exactly helping me get to know you,” he sighed. “Besides, it’s hot.”

“Not that hot.”

“Hot enough.”

She sighed slightly, before tossing the rest of the cone in the garbage can, before giving him a look. “You want what you consider a quote-unquote ‘real’ date, before you have to go back to LA?”

“Yes.”

“Here are my terms,” she said, hands on her hips. “One kiss. Right here in front of the chimpanzees.” She gestured over to the monkey cage next to them, and Colby glanced over before turning back to her.

“I think those are actually orangutans.”

“Whatever. That’s besides the point.” She poked him in the chest lightly. “Do you accept these terms or not?”

“Can’t argue with a deal like that,” he replied with a small smile, before leaning in and sliding his arms around her waist, kissing her lightly. She slid her arms around his neck and allowed him to deepen the kiss, pulling her closer. When they were done, he pulled back far enough to whisper in her ear.

“Did I fulfill the terms of the deal?”

“I think that adequately satisfies them, yes,” she murmured, looking down slightly before pulling back completely. “Call me with the when and where.”

“I will,” he grinned. There was silence for a minute, and he turned to her. “Does this mean we can leave now?” She gave him a look, and he shook his head. “I’m just kidding.”

“Not so funny.”

“I got that,” he nodded, before smirking slightly. “So how’d I measure up to Peluso?”

She rolled her eyes, before taking his hand. “C’mon—we’re going to see the zebras.”

Hee--I'm glad you like it.

Not many people know who Christina is (unfortunately) so it's cool. I'm glad you liked it, though.
