She fell from a hole in the sky.

He was sure that Fleinhart could give him a much longer, and more complicated explanation, but Colby was content to take what she was giving him. She seemed to know how to dumb it down for him in a way that he could kinda understand what was going on. He appreciated that, especially when she seemed to be—from another planet almost. The simpler the explanation, the better in his opinion. She obviously wasn’t crazy—although from the stories she told, he initially thought she was—but she seemed to be very, very lost, and he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to get her back where she belonged.

She had been wandering around, looking lost in the buildings of Los Angeles, when she heard the grinding, not-good sound his car was making. She walked over next to him, asked him if he was having trouble, before looking inside and proceeding to fix his problem in ten minutes flat. Colby was left only to look at her in disbelief.

“How did you—?”

“Oh, it was easy,” she shrugged, a bashful smile on her face. Then she began a statement that started with “Everyone knows—” and ended with so much car mumbo-jumbo that Colby didn’t recognize half of what she was saying. When she was finished, he only blinked at her for a minute, before shaking his head slowly.

Not everyone, actually—I didn’t know that.”

“Oh,” she said sheepishly, ducking her head, and Colby could almost swear she was blushing. He glanced around for a minute before extending his hand to her.

“Colby Granger,” he said, and she gave him a smile before extending her hand to him as well.

“Kaylee,” she replied. “Kaylee Frye.”

“So—you don’t sound like you’re from around here?”

“Umm—well, considerin’ I’m not sure exactly where ‘here’ is—I’m gonna say you’re right,” she said nervously. “May seem like a strange question, but—where am I?”

“You’re in LA,” he said, before glancing around and rambling off the street crossing.

“Well, of course but—” She looked almost flustered, confused. “—what planet am I on?”

Colby swallowed hard for a minute, before responding. “You’re on Earth—”

Kaylee’s eyes widened, and she shook her head, “But that—that’s impossible.”

Colby just looked at her, and she spilled the whole story, telling him how she was supposed to be on a spaceship and Earth was nothing but a barren wasteland, and this just couldn’t be ‘Earth That Was.’ She then asked him a barrage of questions trying to see if she could catch him in some kind of lie. It didn’t work, but he was amused watching her all the same. After he told her that yes, he was sure it was Earth; yes, he had lived here all his life; and yes, his parents were born here too, he watched as she leaned against the side of his car, suddenly looking very lost.

“Guess I’m really far from home, then,” she said sadly.

Colby watched her for a minute, and for some reason, this crazy lady from outer space was getting to him. He placed a hand on her arm before speaking gently. “You don’t have a place to stay, right?” She shook her head slowly, and he nodded, before opening up the passenger door for her. “Hop in.”

He found out quickly that Kaylee couldn’t stay depressed about anything long and by the end of the week, she was begging for him to take her places. She wanted to see anything, everything of what Earth used to be like and she wouldn’t take no for an answer. And considering she needed clothes anyway—none of his stuff fitting her all that well—he figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea if he took her shopping.

Fact of the matter was, he had a feeling that there was no one who wouldn’t be drawn in to her personality. She was just so—happy. There was always a smile on her face, and the simplest things made her so happy. When she asked for something, Colby found himself more inclined to give it to her, just because he liked to see the way her face lit up when she smiled.

It was a few weeks after they had met, when she had talked him into a picnic when it happened. They had stretched out in some park, and she was on her stomach, trying to decide what to eat first. He had learned early on that fresh fruit was something she absolutely loved, and that was what most of their meal consisted of. She picked up an apple from the pile, and cleaned it on her shirt before sinking her teeth into it, her eyes rolling back as though it was the most delicious thing she’d ever tasted.

“Good apple?” he asked with a smirk.

“Don’t tease,” she said, pushing his shoulder lightly. “We didn’t get a lotta fresh food. Everything hadta be freeze dried.”

“I see,” he murmured, and she went off again, rattling on about Serenity—he assumed that was the spaceship—and all the things that Kaylee loved about her, and Colby did it without even thinking. He leaned forward and kissed her gently catching her entirely by surprise. At first he was sure she was going to pull back and slap him or something, but then she leaned into the kiss, sliding her hands up to cup his face as he placed a hand on the back of her head, keeping her close. He eventually had to pull back to breathe, and when he did, she looked slightly confused.

“Needed air,” he whispered, and she looked down with an embarrassed smile.

“Oh,” she whispered, and he grinned back at her once she looked up at him. She shifted so that she was lying on her stomach closer to him, not so far out of reach. She then gave him a softer smile. “When you’re done catchin’ your breath—?” she began and he nodded.

“Yeah?”

“Wanna do that again?”

Kaylee is irrestible and Colby's a perfect knight in shining armor (though he was the one that was rescued). :)

Very cute story. The characters feel very real, and I love that Kaylee's got genius mechanical aptitude no matter what century she's in. Great job.
