Flack/Angell - I'm New at This

Fandom: CSI:NY
Title: I'm New at This
Author: [livejournal.com profile] iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Characters: Don Flack/Jennifer Angell
[livejournal.com profile] csi50 Prompt: 013. Evidence
[livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse Prompt: Topic #194

Summary: Angell guilts Flack into helping her with some evidence.
Author's Note: Pre-series, after Flack first got promoted to the detective. And I love writing the two of them like this.
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS. However, any and all original characters are mine, so please do not use them without my permission.

“Detective Flack?”

He didn’t look up right away. He was still adjusting to the title—“Detective”—he kept thinking they were talking to someone else. It wasn’t until the person in question reached forward and smacked him upside the head that he looked up.

“Yo, Flack! Don’t even respond to your own name?”

He looked up and saw Angell leaning over his desk, an annoyed look on her face. Jennifer Angell was a very beautiful woman—every man in the precinct would admit to it—but when her many looks made it very hard to find her attractive personality-wise on a regular basis. For example, right now, she was wearing the look that said “My superiors all have brains the size of peanuts.” Being one of her superiors, it was only natural that Flack resented it. Even if he wasn’t quite up to speed at the moment.

Flack only stared at her for a minute, waiting for her to tell him what she wanted before actually speaking up. “Yes, Angell?”

“You know that stuff you asked me to go look for?”

“You mean the evidence?”

“Yeah—that.”

“Whadabout it?”

She licked her lips slightly, automatically drawing his eyes there, for a minute before her head jerked to the side, snapping him out of it and he turned to see that she was pointing with her thumb over her shoulder.

“Why don’t you come with me?” she said, and he made a show of rolling his eyes, before getting up and following her. She led him back to the evidence locker, and pointed at the gated door. “I am not going in there to get all dusty and dirty, just so you can kiss Mac’s ass?”

“First of all, I am not kissing Mac’s ass. I’m just making sure he gets something he asked me for. Secondly—you are not. That’s what the evidence locker guy is for.”

The annoyed look cracked and she looked up at him with a smirk, “Evidence locker guy?”

“Give me a break, I’m new at this,” he said, giving her a look, and the smirk changed to a small smile as she tried not to laugh.

“Uh-huh. Anyway, I tried that.” She pointed to the sign plastered on the window of the evidence locker.

Gone to lunch. Find it yourself.

Flack studied it for a minute before patting Angell on the back lightly. “Well, then. Good luck with that.”

Flack,” she whined, giving him a look. “You can’t be serious!”

“As serious as death,” he nodded, before turning to walk away.

“C’mon, Flack, come with me,” she said, her voice suddenly getting softer. “Don’t make me go in there all by myself.”

“Angell, I swear—”

“For old time’s sake,” she said gently, and he could see the soft smile on her face and that look which he hated and loved all at the same time, because that was the look that meant she was going to get her way. He sighed heavily, before turning back to her and shaking his head.

“You are an evil, evil woman,” he said as he walked over and took the keys to the locker off the desk. “And I can’t believe I’m doing this with you.”

She practically beamed at him as she watched him unlock the gate, before stepping in ahead of him. “So it was the Fulton case Mac wanted, right?”

“Right.” He followed her slowly as they went, taking note of all the turns and things. Angell turned back to him and raised an eyebrow.

“Mind picking up the pace a little?”

“I’m making sure I know where we turned. So we don’t get lost later.”

“Wow—you actually did something smart, Flack.”

“Shuddup, Angell.”

***

“You know—the polite thing to do is for the guy to carry the big heavy box, and for the girl to do the navigating.”

“Well—you’re not the one who took note of where we were supposed to turn in order to get back out again,” he pointed out, giving her a sly grin. “Besides—aren’t we supposed to treat all women as equals nowadays?”

“And how—” she grunted slightly, shifting the box in her hands, “—does that apply here?”

“Well—if you were a guy, I would have made you carry the box anyway, because I’ve got the seniority. I’m only doing the same here.”

“Well—if you were as good a guy as you claim, you wouldn’t be letting the girl do the heavy lifting.”

“Guess I’m not, then.”

“That’s disappointing,” she admitted, and he frowned at her tone. It wasn’t sarcastic or amused—she sounded like she was actually being sincere. He turned to look at her, blinking, before responding.

“Did you actually mean that?”

Without skipping a beat, she smirked, “Don’t put too much thought into it, Flack. You might hurt yourself.”

He rolled his eyes, before shaking his head as they rounded another turn. “This place is like a damn labyrinth.”

“Tell me about it,” she sighed. “I’m shocked that we actually found the evidence Mac was looking for.”

“You and me both,” he nodded. “Usually the stuff that winds up in here is lost to the ages.” They dropped into silence for a minute, before Flack saw a name on the corner box that he was supposed to recognize, but didn’t. That was not the name he had noted to himself, and he froze staring at the box, and praying that Angell didn’t put two and two together until they had gotten out of there. Unfortunately, she was going to make a very good detective one day.

Either that, or he needed to be a lot less readable.

“Don’t tell me we’re lost,” she said, glaring at him as her fingers tightened their grip on the box in her hand.

“We’re not lost—” he began, glancing around anxiously, “—so to speak.”

“Oh, hell no,” she shook her head, walking over to him and shoving the box into his stomach, knocking the wind out of him for a minute.

“Ow,” he said softly as he doubled over and she rolled her eyes.

“Stop being such a baby.” After that, she headed off in a direction, disappearing from Flack’s line of vision. He started to panic slightly, and wandered off after her.

“Hey! Where are you going?”

“I’m finding a way out of here!”

“Well—wait for me!” he said, picking up the speed so that he could catch up with her.

“To hell with you! Get lost in here for all I care.”

He glanced around at the boxes, and down to the one in his hand, before hurrying after her, looking desperate.

C’mon, Angell—I didn’t get us that lost—”

::snerk:: Oh, I adored this one. Great job.

Hee...I read some possible spoilers about the two of them for next season, and for some reason it just kicked my muse into gear.

I'm glad you liked it.

Oooh...what spoilers would those be?

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently there's supposed to be some Flack/Angell flirting around episode 7. Which makes me really excited, and I really, really, really hope that the writers don't cut it.

Flack\Angell? SHIT YEAH.
That would be so hot. I think they'd go wicked well together.
Of course. Not as well as Flack and Lindsay.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course not. But while Lindsay is over in Danny-land unfortunately, there's nothing to say that Angell can't keep Flack busy, right?

Although--I will have to swallow the first half of the season with Flack/Rich!Girlfriend. *makes face* I'm usually not one to hate on characters before I see them, but something about her isn't sitting right with me.

I love me some Flack/Angell, so this was awesome. :) Great characterization. There aren't too many F/A fics out there (either that, or I'm blind and can't see them), so it was nice to see this one pop up.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right--there isn't too much of them out there. Hopefully that'll change, but then again--I have a thing for writing the ships no one else writes.

I'm glad you liked it.
