Anna stared at the number she had dialed, before snapping the phone shut again. She knew it was his birthday. And she knew that he would love to hear from her. Well—she hoped he would. She knew that he was uneasy with her being thrown out of the house, but when Nora put her mind to something he knew he couldn’t stop her. Still, regardless, she hadn’t spoken to him in almost ten years now, and the idea of picking up the phone to call him made her a bit nervous.

She placed the phone down and walked away, needing some space from what she wanted to do to just clear her head and calm herself down. It wasn’t that hard. Just call, wish him a happy birthday, and hang up. That’s it. That’s all you need to do. Didn’t even have to him speak to you. Who knows, you might even get his voicemail.

She glanced down at her watch, and nodded slowly. He was at work. He rarely ever picked up his cell phone when he was at work, and all the calls went straight to voicemail. So that was good. All she had to do was leave a voicemail message. She took a deep breath, before walking back over to the table and picking up the phone. She dialed the number, hit send, and pressed it to her ear again. It rang once, twice, and she found herself snapping the phone shut again, and placing it back down on the table.

She couldn’t do this. What if he actually picked up the phone? What if it didn’t go straight to voicemail and she was actually me with a real person on the other end of the line? What would she say? What would she do?

She paced away from the table again, sitting down on the chair across the room and just staring at it. For some reason she felt she had to do this when she didn’t. They were the ones neglecting her, not the other way around. He could just as easily be calling her and wishing her a happy birthday, but she knew that if he called—she wouldn’t pick up the phone anyway.

She got up again, this time more resolved to do what she needed to do. She dialed the number again, and this time it rang once, twice, three times—

“Alan Scherlacker.”

She froze, not sure what to say or what to do. She hadn’t expected him to actually pick up the phone. It was during work hours. He only answered the office phone during work hours, it was the way he always had been. There was a long air of silence on the other end of the line, before the voice spoke up again.

“Hello?”

Her mouth worked, trying to form words to say what she wanted to say, but the only thing that came out was more silence. It must have clicked on for him who it was that was there, because the next word out of his mouth was:

“Anna?”

She couldn’t do this anymore. She had to get off the phone, before she said something she regretted. Before something came out that wasn’t meant to, and she was left kicking herself for even thinking of making the phone call in the first place. She quickly snapped the phone closed and tossed it away from her, wanting it to be as far away from her as possible. Then she just let herself collapse to the ground, burying her face in her knees and crying tears she thought she had finished crying ten years ago.

Across the room from her, the phone buzzed against the floor, spinning and blinking until it stopped, and what was left was a voicemail she never checked, which was just a familiar voice with no greeting and no goodbye, only:

“Happy birthday to you, too, little girl.”

This is sad, but it's very good, too. Wonderful job.
