“It’s freezing in here,” Calleigh said as she walked onto the crime scene. “I mean, there’s air conditioning, and then there’s traveling in a freezer.”

“Train conductor said there’s only one switch,” Yelina said with a small smile. “On or off. And on is better than off when you’re traveling in a metal box.”

“But still, there’s a difference between keeping cool and cold.”

The crime scene was the car of a sleeper train that traveled between New York and Miami. Calleigh watched as Alexx studied the vic, shivering slightly, and half wishing she had worn long sleeves today.

“I think the other people on the train were grateful for it, though,” Alexx said as she looked up from the body. “Baby boy’s been dead for at least ten hours.”

“Think he could have died before the train left New York?” Calleigh frowned, starting to take pictures of the body.

“Or at least injured there,” Alexx nodded. “He’s got a pretty nasty bump on the back of his head—my guess was that he died from a subdural hematoma, but I won’t know for sure until after the post.”

Calleigh nodded, before turning back to Yelina, “You talked to the conductor?”

The other woman nodded, “Vic’s name is Marcus Winfield from Brooklyn Heights. Conductor said he got on in New York, told him his destination, and went to sleep. He never woke up.”

“Possibly that he could head just hit his head on something?” Calleigh suggested. “Accidental death?”

“It’s possible,” Alexx nodded. “As I said, I won’t know more till I’m done with my post.”

Calleigh nodded before turning to Yelina again. “Any next of kin that we know of?”

“Not married, and no record of family here—you’ll have to look it up. Or call New York.”

Calleigh nodded before turning back to the body. It was a long conversation she didn’t want to have, but hopefully he could be professional for at least some of the conversation.

“Well—and here I thought you were avoiding me.”

Calleigh smirked slightly, “I still am. This is purely a business call.”

“Ouch, Duquesne. That hurt.”

“Just answer a couple of questions for me, and I’ll let you turn this into a personal call if you want.” Calleigh was more than willing to negotiate, she just wanted to get the business end out of the way first.

“Now you’re just saying that to make me feel better.”

“Don, please—”

“Alright, alright.” She could hear the grin through the phone. “Whadaya need?”

“We’ve got a vic down here named Marcus Winfield—I’ve been looking for next of kin to contact, but so far I’m coming up empty. Was wondering if you’d have better luck?”

“Let me have a look. What’s the info?”

Calleigh rambled off what she had for him, and waited while Flack ran it. A few minutes later he spoke up again. “Guy doesn’t have any. Looks like he’s been bouncing in and out of foster homes since he was a baby.”

“He’s got no one?” she frowned, leaning back at her desk.

“He’s got a roommate,” Flack said slowly. “Want the number?”

“I’d appreciate it,” she replied, jotting it down as Flack read it off to her.

There was a pause and he spoke up again, “My turn now?”

She sighed heavily before replying. “Go ahead.”

“So—a very reliable source tells me you’ve got some vacation time coming up.”

“What about it?” she said, even though she knew exactly where it was going.

“I was wondering if you maybe wanted to come up North for a little bit,” he said slowly. “I might be able to swing a few days to show you around.”

“I don’t know—” she began, and Flack hesitated before beginning again.

“You know, summer in New York is very nice,” he said slowly. “Plus, I kinda miss you. Especially since you’re not returning my calls.”

“Things have been a bit crazy,” she replied. “I’ve been meaning to call you—”

“No, you haven’t,” he said simply, and there was a deep breath. “Look, Calleigh, the last thing I wanted to do was scare you. I thought we were on the same page, but if we’re not, I’ll back off.”

We were, she sighed to herself, before speaking up again. “I didn’t mean to hurt you, I just—I think it was a bit too much too soon.”

“That’s all you had to say,” he said quietly, before continuing. “Look if you decide you’re coming, let me know soon, or I won’t be able to get the days off.”

“OK,” Calleigh nodded. “Bye Don.”

“Bye.”

He hung up, and Calleigh ran a hand through her hair, trying to get the awkward feelings in her stomach to go away, and refocus on the case. She didn’t have time to worry about Flack right now. Worrying about him would come later.

I really liked this, the fact that things aren't cut and dried between them. Great job.
