The wall of heat hit them the minute they walked in the door of the apartment. Delko choked slightly, before shedding the jacket he had been wearing. “Why don’t we go back to my place?”
Maka only shrugged, sliding out of her suit jacket, leaing her in the tanktop she had underneath. She had never worn tanktops before Miami, but it was too warm here, especially in the summertime, for her normal dress shirts. She really didn’t have any reason to wear them, other than the fact that she didn’t want to deal with the questions about her scar. Once it had been spread around that asking was only going to get you a death glare, people at work left it alone. She wore a jacket over it when she was dealing with suspects and witnesses, but otherwise, she was a lot cooler on the job.
“It’s not that bad,” she sighed. “The super said the AC would be fixed in a bit.”
“And how long is ‘a bit’?” he asked, pulling his shirt away from his skin. “A few hours or a few days?”
“Stop being a baby,” she said. He could tell she was teasing, though there wasn’t much of anything behind the voice. “It’s just a little heat.”
“Babe, a little heat can turn into a lotta heat really quickly.” He walked over and slid his arms around her from behind. “Why don’t we go back to my place? I have air conditioning that works—” He moved his head so that his voice was closer to her ear, “—a bigger bed—”
“You know I hate it when you call me ‘babe,’” she said, shooting him a look over her shoulder.
“I’ll let you kick my ass for it later,” he grinned, “so long as we head to some place a helluva lot cooler.”
She continued to give him a look, before pushing away from him, “It’s too hot for this.”
Delko watched her walk away and sit on her couch. He knew something was up, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on what. She had been acting weird ever since she had talked with Lindsay at the crime scene, and he wasn’t sure exactly what it was about, but he had a feeling that Ryan was somehow in the middle of it.
“Hey,” he said, walking over and crouching down in front of her. “What’s goin’ on?”
She shrugged, “I dunno. I think the heat’s getting to me.”
“Sure it’s just the heat?” he asked and she smirked slightly.
“Well—part of the reason kind of shows my true colors a bit,” she said as he got up and sat down next to her. “I’m not sure I want you to see those yet.”
“What colors are those?” he asked as he stretched an arm around her shoulders. She shifted so that she was leaning against him before speaking up again.
“The ones that show how catty, bitchy, and fantastic at holding a grudge I am,” she sighed.
“Oh,” he nodded. “Those colors.”
“Yup,” she nodded with him. “I’ll get over it.”
“Good.”
“I might need a little help, though,” she said, shifting slightly so that she was facing him. He grinned back at her before shifting so that she could settle into his lap.
“Anything I can do?”
She shrugged slightly as her arms settled around his neck. “Be a really, really good distraction?”
“I can do that,” he said, his grin widening as she leaned in to kiss him. He pulled her tighter against him, his hand sliding under her shirt and feeling the sweat sliding down her back. “You’re sweaty ,” he murmured as the kiss broke.
“So are you,” she replied, pulling back a little further so she could get at the buttons on his shirt.
“We should probably cool off a bit first,” he suggested, shrugging his shirt off her shoulders before leaning over and nipping at the nape of her neck.
She bit back a moan before speaking again, “Shower then bed?” His hands slide back over to her thighs, and she giggled as he scooped her up, carrying her out of the living room. “I’ll take that as a yes,” he murmured as she leaned in to kiss him again, kicking the bathroom door shut behind them.

Maka felt him pressing into her back, and she groaned before trying to push him off her. “Too hot,” she sighed, pushing until his weight disappeared.
“You’re right,” he replied, before rolling out on his back next to her.
“And you were right,” she sighed. “It’s too hot to stay here.”
“Well—we did cool off for a bit,” he said, stretching his arms back over his head, watching her as her eyes drifted down his chest.
“We did, didn’t we?” she said, licking her lips slightly.
“We could do that again,” he smirked, and she grinned back at him.
“Sounds like a good idea,” she said, before sldiing out of bed and making her way back to the bathroom. Delko watched behind her go, his grin widening as she disappeared behind the door. The water started and Maka’s voice drifted back out to him. “Better get in here or I’m starting without you.”
Delko raised an eyebrow, before getting up to follow her. “Don’t have to tell me twice.”
