A thousand miles seems pretty far,
But they’ve got planes and trains and cars
I’d walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us,
But we’d just laugh along because
We know that none of them have felt this way
Delilah, I can promise you, that by the time that we get through
The world will never ever be the same, and you’re to blame

- “Hey There, Delilah” – Plain White Ts

Christina was practically giddy as she skipped around the office. It was a sudden change from the slightly bummed, daydreaming looks she had been wearing as of late. Everyone was happy at the change in demeanor, but no one could quite pinpoint the reason why.

“Her boytoy is flying out from LA for the week,” Jess replied dully, starting to get annoyed every time she had to answer the question. “She hasn’t seen him in a while.”

Billy, who happened to be sharing a case with her at the moment, was glad for the change in mood towards the end of the day, because that meant she was willing to work harder to get things done faster. By the time they finally got to court, they had to put a little extra time in afterwards, but not enough to delay them much. On the day she was most excited—the day everyone assumed was the day of Colby’s arrival—she got a phone call.

“Christina Finn,” she sighed, picking up her office phone.

“Hey Chris,” Colby’s voice came back to her and she frowned at the fact that he was sounding a bit dejected.

“Hey,” she sighed back, trying to still sound optimistic. “Where are you?”

“LA,” he replied, and her frown deepened as he continued. “Just got called in on a case. I won’t be flying out today.”

“You’re kidding me,” Christina said, leaning back into her desk chair, disappointed. “Well, this sucks.”

“Tell me about it. But hey, I’m gonna get there.”

“You just don’t know when.”

“I’m really sorry about this, Chris.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she shook her head. “I mean, work is work, right?”

“Yeah. I’ll see you soon, OK?”

“OK,” she whispered softly as they said their goodbyes and hung up the phone. Billy came over and when he saw the look on her face, he frowned.

“Bad news?”

“My vacation’s being pushed back.”

“That sucks.”

“Yeah,” she sighed, before getting up and picking up her briefcase. She gave him a small smile, “Can’t deal with that now though. Gotta go to court.”

“You sure you’re OK?”

“Yeah—just a little disappointed,” she replied. “Anyway, as I said—show must go on.”

Christina had volunteered to stay and take care of the paperwork that came with closing the case. Billy offered to stay with her, but she shook her head, telling him to go out and have a life.

“You know, we could both work on this and you could be out doing the same thing,” he commented, draping his suit jacket over one arm before picking up his briefcase.

“Guy I want to be having a life with is three thousand miles away right now,” she shrugged. “Better be here thinking about him than out there pretending to pay attention to someone else.”

“Good point,” Billy nodded, before saying his goodbyes and heading out.

Christina managed to finished the paperwork in an hour with minimal distractions. She drifted off every once in a while, but mostly kept her mind on her work and not Colby. She was just finishing filing the paperwork away when her cell phone rang.

“Christina Finn.”

“Where are you?” Colby’s voice came back to her, and while she was happy to hear from him, she was a bit confused at the question.

“The DA’s office—” she replied, her frown deepening. “Why?”

“I’m outside.”

“What?” she said, bolting up from her seat and heading for the stairs. “What about the case?”

“Don let me go,” he explained as she took the stairs two at a time. “I showed up at the scene and he told me dispatch should have never have called me and to—” He stopped when she got to the front door and pushed it open. “—get the hell out of there,” he finished.

She ran over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Why didn’t you call me?” she asked. “I would have come to pick you up.”

“I knew you were gonna be in court all day, and didn’t want to bother you,” he replied, sliding his arms around her waist, and holding her close. “Besides,” he smirked, “I wanted to surprise you.”

“I usually hate surprises,” she sighed.

“I know.”

“This one was kinda nice though,” she grinned, before leaning in for a soft kiss.

“Glad you think so,” he murmured before kissing her back.

I don't watch Conviction, so I don't know these characters, but this was really cute! I like the idea of Don making him leave. Nice job. :-)

One thing: He stopped when she got to the front food and pushed it open. I assume that should be "door." Understandable, though, because I've been making typos like that all day. *headdesk*
