Stella studied the dead body for a minute, feeling the CSI in her brain starting to kick in before she quickly suppressed it. She wasn’t a CSI anymore. She was only a homicide detective. She missed being able to process and interpret the evidence, but she had a feeling she would miss her badge even more. But the first case she had worked, with Greg and Nick, they both asked for her input when it came to some of the evidence, making her feel a little more useful than she would have. Maybe the CSIs who were working this scene would do the same.
“Detective Bonasera?”
Stella turned to see Sara, who she had met on her first trip to Vegas, and a blond woman she didn’t recognize. She was holding out her hand to Stella, and the other woman shook it with a smile, “Stella.”
“Catherine Willows,” the woman said with a smile, “Welcome to Vegas.”
“Thank you,” Stella nodded.
“Nick said you were a hell of a CSI back in New York,” Catherine continued, “What made you decide to just be a detective?”
“I liked my badge more than I liked my kit,” she said with a smile, “Besides, I’m better at departmental politics than I am at office politics.”
“I take it you’ve met Ecklie?”
“Not yet,” Stella sighed, “But I’ve heard enough to know to avoid him.”
Catherine nodded with a smile, before turning back to the body, “Alright—what have we got?”
Stella rambled off the information regarding the case, and watched as they processed the body, occasionally partaking in some light conversation about the evidence, and heading over to the witnesses to ask any follow-up questions.
A few hours into the processing, Stella turned her head to the side slightly as she yawned, hoping that Catherine and Sara wouldn’t see. She wasn’t quite used to being up at this time of night yet. But her working nights made it easier for her and Nick to see each other, rather than if she was working days. So she just had to wait for her sleep cycle to adjust to it, and that was taking longer than she had hoped.
“Fallin’ asleep on us, Detective?” Sara smirked, and Stella laughed.
“No, I’m just—not quite used to working the graveyard shift yet,” she sighed, “I worked days back in New York.”
“Still waiting for your sleep cycle to adjust?” Sara asked and Stella nodded.
“Should be in good shape by the end of the week,” she nodded, “Just have to give it a little time.”
They finished bagging and tagging everything, and Stella was helping them bring everything back to the cars when Catherine spoke up again.
“You know, you and Nicky seem like you’ve got a good thing going,” she said, and Stella nodded.
“I hope so,” she grinned, “First good thing I’ve had in while.”
“First good thing he’s had in a while too,” Catherine nodded, “You make him happy. It’s nice to see him happy again after—” Her voice trailed off, but Stella knew what she was referring to. Catherine shook her head slightly before continuing, “Anyway—just take care of him, alright?”
“I will,” Stella nodded soberly.
“Good,” Catherine nodded, “And he better take care of you, or I bet there’s a whole team of detectives back in New York who would be more than willing to kick his ass.”
Stella smirked slightly, “I’d be disappointed if they didn’t.”
Catherine laughed, as she shut the door to the Denali, and gave Stella a smile, “Seriously, Detective. It’s good to have you.”
Stella nodded, “I’m glad to be here.”
