Delko watched Maka out of the corner of his eye as they drove to the suspect’s house. He knew she was there, but he could also tell she was very distracted at the moment. Probably had something to do with the guy who had showed up at the lab earlier. She hadn’t mentioned anything else about him, but then again he hadn’t asked. Maka really wasn’t one to just bring up information unless you asked for it.
“Everything OK?” he asked, breaking the silence.
“What? Yeah,” she shook her head, “Just—that guy, Danny? I wasn’t expecting him to come down here.”
“Well—you talk about him a lot. Is there a reason he shouldn’t have come down here?”
“Well, no he’s perfectly welcome to come down here,” Maka nodded, “He just has to make sure I know first.”
“Why’s that?” he smirked, giving her a look.
“You know that little voice in the back of your head that let’s you know when something’s a really bad idea?”
“Yeah, I tend to ignore it most of the time,” he joked, and she grinned.
“I listen to it most of the time,” Maka sighed, “But when Danny’s around—he tends to drown it out.”
“Ah,” Delko nodded, “So he’s the little devil on your shoulder?”
“Pretty much,” Maka replied, “We’ve done some really, really stupid stuff together over the years.”
“Yeah, but you came back in one piece,” Delko replied, “Couldn’t have been too bad.”
“Eh—it could get pretty bad,” she grinned before starting to drum her fingers on the armrest on the door, “I just hope he’s not giving Calleigh too much trouble.”
“Calleigh’s got him?”
“A little payback for the other person in New York who’s supposed to keep him in check.”
“What was that detective’s name—Flack?”
“Yup,” she shook her head, “Danny would be all too willing to dish on both of us, and I’m sure there’s a few things about Flack that he doesn’t want her to know, and Danny would be all too willing to tell.”
“Dish on both of you, huh?” Delko smirked, “Maybe I should buy him a beer and ask him to fill me in.”
She gave him a look before reaching across and smacking him on the shoulder, “No. Absolutely not. It’s bad enough everyone in the NYPD knows these stories, I don’t need people like you spreading them down here too.”
“Now, who says I would be spreading anything?” Delko grinned, “I’m just interested in getting to know you as a person, that’s all.”
“I thought we were doing that,” Maka said, giving him a look, “We go out for drinks all the time.”
“Yeah, but you said it yourself, there at things that you wouldn’t really want me to know,” he replied.
“Then get me drunk enough one night, and I might just tell you,” she said as the car pulled up to the curb and they got out.
“You really don’t want me to talk to this guy, do you?” Delko asked as he walked around to the other side of the curb and walked with her to the door.
“Personally? I would prefer that you never had to meet him,” Maka sighed, “Not now anyway. Maybe a few years down the line, when I could look back on those moments and laugh with you.”
“I see,” he said before knocking on the door.
“So what’s this guy’s name again?” she asked.
“Walter McConnell,” Delko replied, “Got some priors for grand theft auto, and his prints were found at the scene.”
“Alright,” she sighed before knocking on the door and watching it as it opened a crack, “Mr. McConnell? I’m Detective Maka, and this is Officer Delko with the Miami Dade Crime Lab—we’d like to ask you a few questions—”
