Maka spotted the blond woman coming out of one of the labs, head in a file, and pulled Danny in her direction, “You in the middle of something?”
Calleigh’s head snapped up and she spotted Maka coming towards her, “Not at the moment, why?”
“Mind babysitting him for a minute?” she asked, and Danny shot her a look.
“I don’t need a babysitter, Maka.”
“Yes, you do.”
“Jesus, I’m a grown man.”
“Danny, Flack left you unattended, and you got on a plane to Miami.”
Calleigh crossed her arms in front of her chest, watching the banter between the two with an amused look on her face. This must be the infamous Danny Messer she had heard so much about, and now she could see why Maka considered their friendship ‘complicated.’ There seemed to be some kind of history there, but Calleigh couldn’t quite put her finger on what right away. But she had a feeling that if she was going to be ‘babysitting,’ she could wheedle it more easily out of him than he could out of her.
“Flack has no say over what I—Ow!” he glared at her as her foot came down on his, and Maka rolled her eyes before turning back to Calleigh.
“So—keep an eye on him? Make sure he doesn’t get himself slapped or anything.”
“I’d love to,” she said with a smile, before extending her hand to him, “Calleigh Duquesne.”
Suddenly, the annoyed look melted from Danny’s face, and was replaced by a mischievous grin, “Danny Messer.”
“Nice to meet you,” Calleigh replied, the smile widening.
“Great,” Maka nodded, “I just have to run down this lead with Delko, and then I’ll catch up with you two later.”
“He’s in good hands,” Calleigh said, and Maka gave her a grin.
“Oh, I know,” Maka grinned back, “If he pisses you off, feel free to shoot him.”
“Hey,” Danny began as Maka started to walk away, and Calleigh laughed.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” She waited until Danny turned back to her, before giving him a smile. “So—lunch sound good to you?”
“That sounds fantastic,” he replied.
“Good,” Calleigh nodded, “Give me a minute to put this away. I know a good place not to far from here.”
“Sounds perfect.”

“So—” Calleigh said after they had placed their orders and the waitress had walked away, “You and Maka have been friends a long time?”
“Oh, yeah,” he nodded, starting to play with the salt shakers, “She was one of the first women on the force to bust my ass for saying something stupid. I’ve been driving her up a wall ever since.”
Calleigh smiled, “So you’re pretty close, right?”
He shrugged, “Yeah, I guess. As close as you can get to that one when you piss her off.”
“That’s true,” Calleigh nodded, “She seems to care a lot for you though, regardless. She’s talked about you a lot.”
Danny looked up at her in interest, “Has she really?”
Calleigh nodded, “She talked about a lot of her friends up there when she first came down here, but she talked about you particularly quite a bit.”
Danny watched her for a minute, “I guess I knew her better than most. She wasn’t really one to get close to people.” He paused for a minute, “Wouldn’t you rather be talking about Flack than Maka?”
“I won’t be seeing Don for a while, so I’m not really concerned about figuring him out yet,” Calleigh replied, lacing her fingers in front of her, “Maka I work with every day—I’m more concerned with figuring her out first.”
“Ahh—I see,” Danny nodded, “before leaning forward and matching her position, “What if we do a bit of a swap?”
“How do you mean?” she said, looking a little confused.
“If you tell me what’s going on between her and this guy she lets call her by her first name, I’ll fill you in on everything I know about her.”
She nodded slowly, “I can do that.”
“Good,” Danny nodded, “Now, I hope you have a long lunch, because my end could take a while.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that,” Calleigh replied with an innocent smile, “The service here takes forever anyway.”
Danny matched her grin, “Oh, I like you. You’re just as devious as he is.”
“Devious? Me?” Calleigh said, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Now, if you want me to talk about Flack, you’re going to have to do something else for me.”
“I’m paying for lunch.”
“Now, there’s the way to a man’s heart,” he smirked, “Now where do you want me to start?”
