Maka froze when she saw him standing at the desk, talking—well, probably flirting—with the receptionist. He wasn’t supposed to be here. He was supposed to be in New York. In the snow and slush, and complaining to her about it on the phone so that she could rub in his face that it didn’t snow in Miami. He was screwing up the routine. He wasn’t supposed to be screwing up the routine.

Oh, Lord she was screwed.

She noticed that he was starting to turn from where he was standing at the desk, and she quickly started to move, ducking behind the makeshift walls of one of the cubicles. Tripp gave her a strange look, and tilted his head to the side slightly.

“You alright, Maka?”

“Yeah—fine,” she shook her head before glancing over the top of the wall, “Could you—could you do me a favor?”

“Sure,” he said, shrugging but still keeping that concerned look on his face.

“Look over towards the reception desk, and tell me there’s a guy still standing there,” she sighed, “About six feet tall, blond hair, glasses—bit of a smartass look to him.”

Tripp did as she requested, and frowned, “I don’t see anyone.”

“You don’t?” Maka replied. Maybe I’m seeing things, she thought before peeking up slightly over the edge of the wall herself. She frowned when she saw that the man in question really wasn’t there. Tripp shook his head before wandering off, and she glanced around to the sides for a minute wondering how fast he could have just disappeared like that. She had started to raise her head up a little more when she heard a somewhat familiar voice coming from behind her.

“Who are you looking for?”

“Oh, this guy I used to work with in the city, Danny Me—” Suddenly, the voice clicked in her head and she spun around. “Danny!” She stumbled backward her back hitting the wall of the cubicle in such an angle that she almost fell. Danny watched her with a smirk for a minute, before reaching forward and steadying her.

“Sorry—didn’t mean to scare you,” he said with a grin that meant that he really, really did. She gave him a look, and he dropped the grin, before licking his lips and speaking again, “So—surprised?” The look became more direct, and he started looking around uncomfortably, before speaking again, “Miami, huh? Seems a bit—bright—for you.”

“I got used to it,” she replied, crossing her arms in front of her chest, “What are you doing here, Messer?”

“Thought I’d come down and surprise you, see how you were doin’,” he said, mimicking the gesture, “But obviously, you’re not happy to see me.”

“No—I am—” she sighed heavily, “—Why’d you have to scare me like that?”

“I didn’t mean to—I swear.” He held up his hands palms open to her, “Just thought you might like a nice surprise, see an old friend, that’s all.”

Maka started to open her mouth again, when a voice came from behind her.

“Kaile, I got a lead on the—” Delko looked up from the file, and frowned when he saw Danny, “—but you’re busy. Sorry.”

“It’s OK,” she shook her head, “Delko, this is Danny Messer, one of the detectives I used to work with in New York. Danny, this is Eric Delko, he’s one of the CSIs here at the lab.”

“How ya doin’?” Danny sighed, extending his hand to the man, and Delko gave him a nod before shaking it.

“Nice to meet you.”

Maka turned back to Delko, “Give me a minute to get rid of him, and then you can fill me in.” Delko nodded in agreement.

“I gotta let Natalia know, anyway.”

Danny watched the other man walk away, before turning back to Maka with a smirk. “Kaile? You never let me call you Kaile on the job.”

“Things change, Messer,” she replied, and Danny arched an eyebrow in surprise, before speaking again.

“I guess I should let you get to work, no?” he said as he started to walk with her, following her towards the front desk of the labs.

“Guess so,” Maka sighed, “But why are you really here, Danny. You wouldn’t hop on a plane to go to Miami just to scare the shit out of me.”

“Well, you’re right—I do have an ulterior motive,” he nodded, “Which one is this ‘Calleigh’ Flack keeps goin’ on about?”

“I’ll point you in the right direction, but you are aware that he is going to kill you?”

“I’m very aware of that, yes,” he grinned, “You’re not going to help hide her from me? I thought you and Flack were friends.”

“We are—but he broke the rule.”

“And what rule is that?”

“He wasn’t supposed to let you leave the state.”

Flack reached for the phone on his desk absentmindedly, putting it to his ear without even thinking, “Homicide—Detective Flack.”

“You let him leave the state.”

“Let who leave the state, Maka?”

“Messer.”

Flack nodded slowly for a minute, engrossed in something else, before looking up in surprise, “Messer’s in Miami?”

“Yup.”

“If you’re joking, Maka, I’m going to hurt you the next time I see you.”

“I am definitely not joking.”

“Please tell me you didn’t—”

“You know, Calleigh thinks he’s kind of charming—in his own way.”

“Oh, God.”

“Danny likes her too. Thinks you two will be great for each other, massive height difference aside.”

“I hate you.”

“I know you do.”

“I’m gonna kill him when he gets back.”

“You know, in retribution, you could tell me exactly who this girl is that he keeps going on and on about?”

Flack paused for a minute, leaning back in the chair with a small smirk, “You know, I’m sorely tempted but—I just can’t do it, Maka. Unlike some people, I can’t break that kind of trust.”

“You were the one who let him leave the state, Flack. Just remember that.”

Mwuahaha...this had to be my favorite line:

“Danny likes her too. Thinks you two will be great for each other, massive height difference aside.”

I really enjoyed this one, and can't wait to see the Danny & Calleigh fic.
