Tripp dropped the envelope on her desk as he passed by, and Maka looked up at him in confusion. “What’s this?”

“Just came in from New York this morning,” he replied, “Apparently they caught your boss doing the same thing to another one of the female officers, and he’s been given the option of a bit of an early retirement.”

“They want me back?” she frowned.

“Apparently,” Tripp sighed, “Either that, or they’re looking to know if they should make the transfer permanent.”

Maka nodded, and opened the envelope, looking at the paperwork in front of her. Tripp was getting ready to walk away, before he turned back to look at her again.

“Look, Maka, you’ve done some top notch work around here,” he said slowly, “Really been an asset. If you’re thinking about it, really consider sticking around down here. We could use some good detectives like you.”

She nodded again, “I will, Tripp. Thanks for dropping these off.”

“Anytime,” he replied, before turning and walking away again.

Maka was staring down at the paperwork again, not sure of what to do. She had a life and friends up in New York that she could go back to, but then again, she was starting to build a life and friends here too. She was getting more chances to work here. And then again there was the added complication of Eric.

They had stopped dragging Ryan along as a chaperone when they went out for drinks and had just been spending the time talking, just the two of them. She liked spending time with him. He wasn’t just bad jokes and the occasionally smartass comment, he was a person under there, which is more than Danny had ever let her see. She saw potential in their relationship, and she wanted it to go somewhere. But even he wouldn’t want her to stay just because of him. He wanted her to be sure that Miami was what she really wanted.

“Hey, Maka,” Ryan sighed, coming up to her desk, “We just got a call for a four-nineteen.”

“I’ll be right there,” she replied, folding up the last of her files and putting some things away. Ryan got a closer look at the papers on top of her desk.

“Are these transfer papers?” he asked, turning them slightly to look at them.

“Yeah,” she nodded, “They want me to go back to New York.”

“Are you going to?” Ryan asked, looking slightly concerned. He had gotten used to having someone sniping with him when it came to anything and everything, and he didn’t want to admit it, but he might miss her. Just a little.

“I haven’t decided yet,” she sighed.

“Well—do you want to?”

“I don’t know,” she replied, “Things are a lot more complicated than they were six months ago.”

“So you might go back.”

“Yes, I might,” she replied, before taking the papers and sticking them in her desk, “I just don’t know if that’s a definitely yet. Can we please drop this?”

He nodded and followed her as she started to walk out of the precinct. She pulled out her car keys and gave him a slight smile, “Where’d the call come from?”

Eric was getting ready to head out with Maka for the evening, when Ryan walked into the locker room. Things were going pretty well with Kaile. He was pacing himself with this one. He didn’t want to scare her off, and he didn’t want things with her to just be a one night stand, either. She was different, interesting. He liked the way she talked about the city and being back home. And there was definitely something there. He just hoped she was sticking around. She’d been here for six months now, and so far, nothing from New York.

He gave Ryan a nod as the man walked over to his locker. Ryan didn’t say anything for a moment, before speaking up, “You seeing Maka again tonight?”

“Yeah, we’re going for drinks,” Eric replied, frowning slightly, “Why?”

“Just thought I should let you know,” Ryan said, “She’s going back to New York.”

“What?” he said, giving the other man a look.

“I saw the transfer papers on her desk this morning,” he replied, “She said she wasn’t sure yet, but you and I both know how much she loved New York.”

“Yeah,” Eric said softly, “Sometimes it’s all she talks about.”

“She might be telling you tonight, I thought I’d just give you a heads up.”

“Thanks,” Eric said, but his voice didn’t really convey the same meaning. He started to move a bit slower. They both looked up when there was slight knock on the locker room door.

“You almost ready to go, Delko?”

“Yeah, I’ll be there in a minute,” he nodded. She gave him a small smile before disappearing. Eric gritted his teeth before turning to Ryan. “Thanks a lot for the heads up, Wolfe.”

Ryan watched him as he walked out to door, and shook his head, “Jesus, I was just letting him know.”

“You alright?” she asked as he walked her to the door of her condo.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” he shrugged. She hadn’t said a word about the transfer, and he didn’t know if it was because she still hadn’t decided, or she wanted something else. “Why?”

“You just—you seem a little off tonight,” she replied, giving him a concerned look.

“I’m just tired,” he said as they reached her door. She hesitated, playing with her keys slightly.

“Wanna come in for a cup of coffee?” she asked, looking up at him hopefully.

“We just spent the entire night over drinks and you want to drink more?” he frowned, not quite getting it.

“Well, I was thinking a different kind of coffee,” she said slowly, moving closer to him.

He gave her a look, still not, “A different kind of—” She cut him off with a quick kiss, and when she pulled back he laughed slightly, “Oh—that kind of coffee.”

“Yeah,” she nodded, before leaning in again, “That kind.” He kissed her this time, slowing it down and making sure she didn’t pull away so quickly. He stared to back her towards the door and when she felt her back hit the wood, she unlocked the door as quickly as she could without breaking the kiss, and led him into her apartment. They stumbled their way into her living room, and that was when his brain started to kick into gear and realize what she was doing. Or, at least what he thought she was doing.

“No,” he said pulling away from her, and she looked confused.

“No,” he shook his head, “I’m not going to be that guy.”

“That guy? What guy?” she said, the same look still on her face.

“The guy that you screw right before you leave, just so that you don’t have any regrets or some shit like that.”

“—the hell?” she said, giving him a look, “I don’t know what you were drinking tonight but—”

“You’re leaving, Kaile,” he replied, his voice dropping slightly, and she looked up, concerned.

“Who told you that?”

“Wolfe. He said he saw the transfer papers on your desk.”

Suddenly her face hardened, “That little son of a—I’m not going anywhere, Delko. Or at least, I wasn’t.”

“What?”

“I was going to stay,” she replied, “Because I wanted to see if this was going to work. But I’m not so sure I want to try and make things work with someone who thinks that I would do something that low to a friend, let alone someone more than that.”

He closed his eyes and shook his head, “I fucked this up, didn’t I?”

“I’m not blaming you,” she sighed, running a hand through her hair, “But I think you should go.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s OK,” she replied, sitting down on her couch, “Just—go. Please.” She watched him as he walked out, and when she heard the click of the door shutting behind him, she collapsed back into the couch, feeling her hands tense into fists.

She was going to kill Wolfe.

Hell, I'd kill Wolfe, too. I really hope she doesn't go. Or if she does, Delko kills Wolfe.

either way, i don't think ryan's getting a happy ending.

i'm glad you liked it.

Wolfie, you've really screwed up this time. Tsk, tsk! He does have a tendency to jump to conclusions, doesn't he? He needs to work on that.

I like this. I get a perverse sort of pleasure imagining what Delko and Kaile are going to do to Wolfe when they get their hands on him. I hope that those two get a happy ending, though.

they probably will. ryan, however, is a completely other story, but i think it'll all pan out for everyone in the end. hopefully.

i'm glad you liked it.
