Delko/Maka - Punishable by Law
maybe it's just me...but having "Kaile" and "Calleigh" in the same fic can be mighty confusing. or this might just be the fact that it's late and i'm tired, but wanted to get this out of the way before i jumped back into dean/calleigh land.

Kaile felt her eyes wandering again, as they drifted across the floor of the lab, from the file she was reading to the man who was standing not to far from her, chatting aimlessly with Boa Vista. She was trying all she could to focus on what was in front of her, but she was finding Eric Delko a bit more of a—distraction—than she had ever anticipated.
Damn him, she thought, nibbling on her lower lip slightly. It was never this bad when it came to Danny. Usually the man would open his mouth and say something stupid and that would be the end of it. Delko, however—Delko was about twenty times worse, and she needed to find a way to fix this, fast or she wasn’t sure she was going to be able to make it through this stint in Miami without doing something really, really stupid.
She heard the click of heels on the floor in front of her, and she quickly diverted her eyes back to the file in front of her. The footsteps stopped, and she knew the look Calleigh was giving her without even having to look up.
Calleigh glanced over to where her two coworkers were standing, and then back to her friend, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
“Anything interesting over there?”
“Over where?” Kaile asked, trying to blow it off as nothing, and Calleigh rolled her eyes.
“Funny. Because you seemed to be quite interested on whatever Natalia and Eric were saying to each other.”
“I’m not,” Kaile sighed, looking up at Calleigh, “Besides—you can’t hear anything from here anyway.”
“You know, Kaile,” she began, a smirk crawling up the side of her face, “It’s not punishable by law to find Delko attractive.”
A slight blush appeared on the other woman’s cheeks, “Maybe not. But if you know a way to stop it, please, tell me.”
“What makes you think I know how?” Calleigh frowned.
“Because according to the office rumor mill, you’ve managed to work with him for x amount of years without jumping him,” Kaile replied, “And I’d like to achieve the same myself.”
Calleigh glanced around before nodding towards the breakroom, “Maybe we shouldn’t discuss this here, with him close enough to be in earshot.”
She followed Calleigh into the breakroom and watched the other woman as she shut the door behind them, to give them some privacy.
“The reason why I’m able to hold that record—” Calleigh began, “—because apparently it is one, is that Eric—isn’t exactly my type.”
“Right,” Maka grinned, “I forgot. You’re more into tall dark haired New York detectives with pretty eyes.”
This time it was Calleigh’s turn to blush, and she flashed her friend a look, “You keep pushing me towards Flack, but you won’t let me give you a little nudge in Eric’s direction?”
“That’s because it’s been scientifically proven that Flack is incapable of screwing around,” Kaile replied, “A) He’s too good a guy, and B) the hours he works for him are too crazy for him to even go out and find a first girl, let alone sleep around on one.”
“Really?”
“It’s why he’s still single, or I swear, someone would kidnapped him, dragged him to the altar and forced the ring on his finger already.”
“And if Flack’s such a good guy, why haven’t you carried out this elaborate scheme to tie him down?” Calleigh asked, raising an eyebrow in her direction.
“Because I do stupid things like assault my boss and get sent on a one-way trip to Miami,” Kaile replied with a smirk, and then her face sobered slightly, “And—unfortunately for me—good guys like Don don’t really do it for me.”
“You prefer to run the risk of getting hurt,” Calleigh said softly.
“For some crazy reason—yeah,” Kaile sighed.
“So if Delko is what you consider exactly your type—” Calleigh frowned, giving her friend an inquisitive look.
“Why haven’t I jumped his bones already?” Kaile finished for her, and Calleigh smirked.
“I was going to be more tactful about it,” the blond woman crossed her arms in front of her chest and waited, “But yeah.”
“I have this rule,” Kaile replied, “Since I’m not staying long, I’m not going to get to involved. Besides, sleeping with people you work with his bad news. I learned that the hard way once.”
There was a knock on the breakroom door, and Delko poked his head in, giving the two of them a smile.
“Maka—we still on for later?”
“Yeah, just let me finish this up.”
Delko nodded, before giving Calleigh a wave and disappearing out the door. Calleigh gave her friend a look.
“You two have plans?”
“We’re—having drinks,” she said slowly, and the look deepened, “Wolfe’s coming too.”
“I’m sure he loves that,” Calleigh shook her head.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kaile asked, confused, and Calleigh just shook her head.
“Nothing,” the other woman sighed, “Two things, and maybe these’ll help with your—problem.”
“What’s that?”
“That despite his reputation, Eric really is a good guy, and as long as the terms of the relationship are—clearly defined—he’ll stick to them.”
“OK. What’s the other one?”
“Sometimes rules are meant to be broken,” Calleigh stated smoothly, “If not broken, at least bent a little.”
