Summary: Maka meets Horatio for the first time.
Author's Note: Part of my "A Place for Us" series (i have a title. yay!). Comes after What Did You Hear.... I'm very amused with Horatio in this.
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of CSI: Miami or CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS.

“There an ID on him, Alexx?” Maka asked as she arrived on the scene, walking over to where the coroner was crouched next to the body. The victim was a young man in his late twenties, who looked like he had been on the wrong end of a pretty big gun. He had been found in an abandoned warehouse relatively near the docks.

“Nope,” Alexx Woods shook her head, “Looks like this guy’s a John Doe.”

“I guess I’ll go start collecting statements then,” she sighed, glancing around at the people the uniforms had detained when they were setting up the perimeter, “Do you know who’s heading up this case?”

“Well, I just came from a double that Calleigh and Natalia were processing,” Alexx replied, continuing to get the body ready for transport, “So it’s probably Delko and Ryan out on this one.”

Maka gave her a nod before heading over to the group of witnesses. It wasn’t much longer before Horatio Caine arrived on the scene and headed over to Alexx.

“What have we got, Alexx?” he asked, and she took a deep breath before she began.

“Male vic, wouldn’t put him beyond his late twenties,” Alexx began, “Multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, and the lividity is fixed which means he died here.”

“He have a name?”

“Nope,” Alexx sighed, “John Doe.”

“Is there someone collecting statements?”

Alexx nodded in the other woman’s direction, “Detective Maka got here just before you did.” He watched as the man followed her eyes, “You haven’t worked with her yet, have you?”

“No, Alexx,” he said, before taking off his sunglasses, “But I’m about too.”

“Detective Maka,” Horatio began as Maka turned from the last witness she had to interview. He had heard quite a few things about the new detective from around the lab, but he had yet to meet the woman himself. He gave her a soft smile before continuing, “I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of working together yet.”

“The infamous Lieutenant Caine,” she said with a grin, “It seems as though we haven’t.”

“Detective Taylor in New York speaks very highly of you,” Horatio said.

“Next time I speak with him, I’ll have to thank him for putting in a good word,” she said with a nod.

“Well,” he said, as he replaced his sunglasses, “Let’s get to work. What have you got?”

“One of the tenants came out this morning to get his morning paper and found the body there. Early canvas of the neighbors say they’ve never seen him before, and as far as they know he’s not a tenant, and they claim to have not seen or heard anything unusual last night, so I was just getting ready to go in and start knocking on doors.”

“Delko’s gonna be late,” Ryan sighed as he arrived on the scene, “He’s coming from a B and E across town.”

“That’s alright, Mr. Wolfe,” Horatio replied, “When he gets here, he can help Detective Maka with the canvas. You start processing the body, and the scene, and I—will talk to the man who found him.”

Maka watched Horatio as he walked off, and raised an eyebrow to his back, before turning to Ryan, “Mr. Wolfe?”

“Yeah,” Ryan nodded.

“He ever just call you Ryan or Wolfe?”

Ryan took a deep breath before shaking his head, “No, no he doesn’t.”

Maka nodded slowly before speaking, “O-kay.”

thanks. but h is weird. that's just the way it is.

Horatio is one of the characters that I can't stand on the show, but really like in a lot of fics. This was a nice little look at the strange things Miamis redhead saviour does.

As a random by the way, I saw the movie 'Gandhi' in school yesterday, and everytime Gandhi had something smart to say he would put on his glasses and it reminded me so much of Horatio that I laughed until I cried.

omg...i would totally be cracking up at that too.

i've gotten to the point where i don't mind horatio as much as i used to...can't say i love him, but it's fun to make fun of the weird quirks he has. and he's a lot of fun to write in fic, because the way he talks is so easy to get down. he goes through a lot of the same mannerisms and his cadence is relatively consistent. it makes my life easier.

anyway, i'm glad you liked it.

In Norway were in the middle of season...I have no idea, but it's in the middle of the Marisol fiasco, and everything Horatio does makes me want to beat him to death with his own glasses. Before that season I really didn't mind him at all. Annoying? Yes, but the cheesy line he did in the start of every show wasn't that...strange, to be polite. Now he has me wondering if he's borrowing from Marisols stash of weed.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
the marisol debocale is the part of season 4 that i chose to ignore. they just took things too far too fast. getting into season 5, though, he's back to being tolerable again, so i guess that's something for you to be looking forward to.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
it gets better? I haven't watched it in a while, 'cos it was getting redicolus. But if you say so, I'm inclined to believe you.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
just don't watch "Rio." it had me worried.

but it's been a pretty calleigh-centric season, which means things are slightly less over the top than usual. i've been pretty happy with it.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Calleigh? I've missed her, she's been neglected since early season 3. The episode where Calleigh and Speed worked together were my favs and to be honest one of the only reason why Horatio didn't make me go insane. Now I'm actually looking forewards to the next season. Imagine that.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
i really didn't realize how kickass calleigh really was. i started watching the show season 3, and they had pushed her to the background so much that i really didn't see what people saw in her. now i've started to like her quite a bit. after all, i ship her with flack. that's usually a pretty good sign that i like someone.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
season 1 and 2 is a must see. seriously, horatio is semi normal, at least if you started watching season 3. plus there's a team spirit that can put any chearleader squad to shame. it's simply enjoyable to watch.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm gonna get around to renting it from somewhere eventually. i really want to see something with speedle, so i can actually write him without worrying about butchering him.

plus, i heard that delko speaks russian. which, even in theory, is making my brain melt.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
and trust me, russian speaking delko? yummie... that and it has speedle in it. My all time fav csi.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i hear a lot about how great a character speedle is, so i really want to see him in action. the only episodes i've really seen him in is the crossovers with Vegas and NY, and the i saw "Lost Son." neither of which really gave me a good bearing on his character.

i happen to like ryan a lot though, despite how much i pick on him, and i really hope tha i like speedle as well.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that I don't like Ryan. It's just, he's not Speed. It's the same way I feel about Lindsey. I don't know, I guess I get a little posessive over the original crews.

The Aiden is a Goddess thing buggs me to. But truth is she and Carmine had this fantastic chemestry, the way they worked with each other, their timing, it was magical (ok, so I'm exagerating slightly, but you hopefully get my point). And in the second season Belknaps acting was unsteady at best. And I know it was because she came into a set where people had worked together for a while, but still.

And I think the Speedle fans backed a bit of because Rory made it so clear that he wanted out.

i actually really liked the danny/aiden-ness of the first season, once i went back and watched it. i would have loved to see how that relationship would have evolved if aiden had stayed. aiden's actually the one female character on that show i would ship with danny before flack.

but anna's characterization wasn't necessarily her own fault, that could be in the writing (which can be sub par when it comes to character development). but as i said, i walked in in the middle myself, so i guess me and lindsay kind of connected on that level, coming into something where they had already been a settled group.

i do wish they hadn't killed aiden though. while it's a great angst point for fic, i would have liked to see her come back and interact with lindsay.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The first few episode they mentioned at least once in what felt like every single scene that Lindsay was from Montana. And that pretty much was all the character we got out of it. That pretty much killed all chances of me ever more then tollerating her on the show. But it has improved, although this big dark secret they keep focusing on is annoying as hell. Why can't a girl take a job far away from home because she likes the challenge or it was an opportunity and not to run away from a scary past? (Although since I've only seen until episode 5 of the new season I don't know if the cat is out of the bag yet.)

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not. and it's probably not happening this season, now that anna's pregnant. she's probably going on maternity leave soon, so...yeah. and i agree about the deep dark secret. but sometimes it's what the writers think makes a character interesting.

also, there was the thing that they rode out the danny/lindsay ship till it sunk. they were cute in the beginning, but i was sick of it by the time "Love Run Cold" came around. i actually prefer to ship her with flack or hawkes.

[identity profile] ladeppo.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you see the supermen, or at least supersomething, episode? They were supposed to be flirting, but christ there was really *nothing* between them, and when you think how there's been great flirting between danny and every single female casting down to the third extra from the right in that scene with the dog, you see how silly the pairing really is.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
they were pretty cute in the beginning though. it was just that TPTB killed it by putting it in every. single. episode. what i like about my ships (excluding the ones that don't have screentime period) is that i have to wait and keep guessing if they were going to have some moments in the show.

it gives me a headache.

A little random...I downloaded a few eps last night (cept Rio) and I love season 5 of CSI Miami. All the Calleigh centered, Horatio back to his seminormal state Delko wearing an open shirt with a tight white top under stories.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
season five keeps getting better as they go. i really am quite happy with it. it's reminding me a lot of season 3, which was the season that got me hooked.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)

i can understand that. but the aiden lindsay issue with me, is i didn't see season 1 until after i was already a good deal into season 2. what really turned me off to the character was the way the fans i was talking to at the time turned her into the fandom's golden goddess, when really, in my opinion, she didn't really deserve it. i have nothing against the character...i just don't see how aiden and lindsay were that different.

luckily, the miami fans didn't do that as much with speedle, so i'm really looking forward to seeing some episodes with him in it.

I love how curious Maka is about that little fact. Ryan never does get called 'Ryan' by Horatio. I really hope Horatio calls Maka 'Miss' like he does with Boa Vista.

[identity profile] iluvroadrunner6.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
miss maka? i think she might not be too thrilled with that.

i just think it's something maka would wonder about. mac doesn't necessarily walk around calling danny, mr. messer.

[identity profile] darkmagic-luvr.livejournal.com 2006-11-25 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be really funny if he did though.

yes it would. it would actually be quite funny.
