OC Backstory - Monica McFadden

I don't think I'm going to be writing much of her with Ryan yet, (I want to see how the season six spoilers play out) but I think I will be writing some of her and Ben. If I start writing them together at all.

monica
Actual Person: Katherine McPhee, singer

Age: 27
Parents: Eric and Molly McFadden
Siblings: Brendan, James and Holly McFadden

Monica was the second oldest of four in the McFadden family. She grew up in a local suburb near Orlando, Florida. Her father and mother were both Disney workers, so their children practically grew up in the park. Most of their after school jobs were at the parks and they knew every property like the back of their hands by the time they were ten. Monica’s older brother, Brendan, was as much of an attention whore as she was growing up, so she spent a lot of her childhood competing with him for center stage. That translated over the when she got to school, and she always felt she need to have all eyes on her. It was a personality trait she has since tried to tone down some, but it still rears its head every once in a while.

In school, Monica was always in the tops of her classes, especially in the areas of math and science. While she loved performing, and participated in most of the after-school activities to that effect, she didn’t want to end up like her parents, working in an amusement park for the rest of her career. Plus, her parents also put a heavy importance on grades and doing well in school, so Monica was always pushed in the right direction to succeed. Even if she couldn’t perform, though, she wanted to do something that she loved and was good at, so she set her sights on medicine. She graduated in the top ten percent of her class in high school, and got into the University of Miami on an academic scholarship for the pre-med track.

When she got to Miami U, that was when she first met Ben Malone. They had a couple classes together freshman year, and hit it off pretty well. That was what started their on-again, off-again relationship which carried through until pretty much the end of their undergrad years. She loved the way he treated her (which was basically like a princess), but their relationship tended to drift between bickering and the bedroom, and she knew that wasn’t what she wanted. She broke up with him for good shortly before graduation, but when the summer was over and she arrived at John Hopkins in Maryland, she was slightly disgruntled to find that he had followed her. However, in med school, he put more effort into being her friend and less effort into getting her into bed, causing her to find out that she could mildly stand him most of the time, and they became rather close.

She spent most of her med school years stocking up on as many internships as possible. Surgery had always been her strong suit. She had very steady hands, and had performed well with the dissections they’d done and the cadavers. However, when she actually got to the surgical rotation of her residency, she found that operating on a live person was something completely different. In fact, the first time she sat in on a surgery, she passed out on the attending who was doing the procedure.

Live patients apparently weren’t for her, but she needed to do something with her medical degree. One of her professors suggested that she look into pathology. She started an internship at the ME’s office in Baltimore, and fell in love with the job. While the crime scenes took some getting used to, she was still able to do the surgical work she was good at. Once she finished her internship, she fielded offers from many morgues across the country, including New York, Las Vegas, and Miami. She had her heart set on New York, at first. Her and her siblings used to spend the summers in New York with their grandmother when they were kids, and she had always loved going to the city. She interviewed there first, and initially decided that that was the place for her. Her and Hammerback got along really well, while Marty Pino was an old friend of the family, so she felt the most at home. However, just as she was flying out to Vegas for her interview, (she wanted to give them all a fair shot) she got a phone call that her father had had a heart attack. She ditched the interview and got on the next plane to Orlando.

Her father recovered, but she didn’t want to be too far from home in case something happened again. She turned down the job in New York and went to the interview in Miami, where she ran into Ben Malone yet again. He had heard about her father, and put in a good word to Alexx for her, so she could work somewhere close to home around people she was comfortable with (she got along well with Ben’s sister, Angie). That combined with a good interview, got her the job at the Miami medical examiner’s office.

Monica is very close with all her siblings, but they’re not about to cover up the dysfunction in their relationship. While she’s closer emotionally to Brendan, she’s not shy about saying that her favorite of the four of them is James. They also fight quite a bit, talking over each other, and yelling and the like, but most of the yelling in Brendan’s direction is done through the phone, because he now works in at Sea World in California (he’s a sea lion trainer). While they may fight, they’re very protective of each other, each in their own way, and will go to the end of the earth for their siblings, and make time for each other whenever possible. She isn’t particularly close to her parents, though, but they instilled in her a good sense of family. Having a family of her own is definitely one of her long term goals, but she has a very short attention span when it comes to romantic relationships. She hopes to find someone who can hold her attention one day, but it’s getting to be a more distant dream every time she tries.

She has a very outgoing personality, and while she tries to tone it down the best she can, sometimes she can’t help herself. Generally speaking, she’s very sweet, but can be a bit self-centered without really realizing it. If someone calls her on it, she’ll apologize to the end of the world, unless she’s fighting with them, and she’ll deny it vehemently. She has a weakness for Meatloaf (the singer, not the food) and opera, and she often listens to music when she’s performing her autopsies. She has a taste for high class merchandise (Ben spoiled her a bit too much), but she’ll look for things on sale, or save up for them. She doesn’t spend frivolously at all.

Definitely. Hopefully she writes as well as she sounds.
