Can you guys tell me if I'm over-reacting here?

OK, so every year my church has a local carnival, where there's games and rides and food. My mom gave my two younger siblings twenty-five dollars to buy a ride pass, and then five bucks on top of that for games/food. She didn't have a lot of cash on her though, so when the older of my two brothers showed up and asked her for money, she didn't have any. So she told him to go ask me for cash (she didn't give me any, btw), and that she would pay me back the next day. I really didn't want to loan my brother money (because I don't work while I'm in school, so I have to save up, and I had a lot of unexpected expenses this summer--so I don't have a lot saved up), but I did it anyway. At the end of the night, I asked for the change back.

First of all, should I not have asked for the change back?

When he gets home, he demands the change back, saying that it was "his" money, and I had no right to ask for it back. A huge argument ensues, which ended in him calling me selfish and self-centered.

Keep in mind the fact that he just came back from a road trip, and he had twenty-six dollars at the beginning of the day and knew that he was coming to the fair, and he burns through money like it's nobody's business. Also--he can be a real jackass when he wants to be, and when he asks you for money, he asks you like he's entitled to it, and won't let up until you give it to him. So tell me--did I overreact? Honestly?
