OC Backstory - Eva Patterson

i was bored. so i figured, i did this for angie, why not for my other OCs too. and since i've been neglecting eva as of late, i decided to do her first.

eva
Actual Person: Kate Beckinsale, actress.

Age: 25
Parents: Martin and Carolyn Patterson
Siblings: N/A

Evangeline Patterson was born into a normal upper-middle class family in a large suburb of New Jersey. She was an only child, and while her father, Martin, loved her dearly, he was often away on business, and she was left to the whims of her mother, Carolyn. Carolyn wasn't abusive, she just wasn't exactly the most emotionally available person in the world, and she and Eva had a very distant relationship. They were never close, and since she was the only person in the household for Eva to relate to, home wasn't such a friendly place.

Also as a result, she was never really good at making friends. Always a bit on the shy side, she really didn't open up until high school. Both parents had enstilled in her a love of the arts, and when she got involved in her high school's drama club, she fell in love with the idea of being on stage. She was determined to pursue it as a career, despite what her mother's pleas for her to do something practical with her life. Eva was enamored with the idea of being a starving artist, and wasn't about to listen to the woman who wanted no say in her life for the past seventeen years. It was also in high school where she met the person who was soon to become her best friend, as well as her later partner in crime, Chelsea Carlson and Will Richards.

After graduating high school, both she and Chelsea enrolled in the musical theater program at Montclair State University. She graduated with her BFA, and then both women moved to the city, where they crashed with Will until they managed to find a place of their own, a relatively cheap fifth floor walk-up, with a landlord who was pretty flexible about the rent. Then, they both started hitting the audition pavement, while trying to find odd jobs to keep them afloat at the same time. Eva managed to hold down some chorus roles in a few off-Broadway productions (her strongest asset was her voice) but was having little-to-know luck in the job department, while Chelsea was having less luck on the audition circuit, and more luck actually holding down a steady job. It was in these small parts, however, she met one of the biggest influences on her life, Matt Johnson.

Her and Matt's relationship was rocky at best, but she loved him. Chelsea never trusted Matt and did her best to tell Eva that he was no good, but none of her other friends that she had made over the course of living in the city were saying anything but good things about him. Matt also tended to be abusive in a minor emotional sense, always pointing out her short comings when she had them, yet never recognizing her achievements. She continued to see him until she actually caught him in the act herself, which really did a number on her confidence level and her ability to get herself to open up emotionally. Her friends tried to pull her out of it, dragging her around to do different things, none of which were mind-blowingly serious, except for the time when Will got busted for pot and she was with him. This event caused her to indirectly meet the next biggest influence on her life, Don Flack, and the first half of her relationship with him was probably when she was the happiest (more in detailed look at their relationship as a whole, read Seasons of Love series).

Eva doesn't really deal well with people, emotionally speaking. She has a hard time really delving into her own feelings, and talking about them with other people, making her not the easiest person in the world to deal with. She tries to keep things as simplistic as possible in that respect, and sometimes doesn't recognize that the little choices she makes are what hurts people the most. The biggest roadbump with most of her relationships, is that she's reluctant to tell people how she really feels, for fear of a reaction of indifference from the people around her. She doesn't care what the opinion on what she's trying to tell you is, but if you have an opinion, it means you care and that's good enough. So to keep herself from seeing that look of indifference, she either doesn't say anything at all, tells the person to forget she ever said anything, or leaves before the person can react, all of which frustrate the person on the recieving end beyond belief, or hurt them more than she realizes.

She is also an avid fan of Renissance Festivals. Will got her into them when she was in high school, and after a bit of fight training from others who were also involved, she started performing there was well. It's one of her guilty pleasures, despite the fact that the risk of injury is incredibly high. She has actually been injured herself several times, including concussions from indirect blows to the head, a broken wrist from taking a fall the wrong way, and, the one she considered the most serious, an axe to the thigh, which had her on crutches for a month, preventing her from finishing the fair that summer.

Eva, herself, is hard to get to know. She can be just as emotionally unavailable as the person she was rasied by, only with gentle prodding you can get her to open up eventually. She's only outgoing when she auditions, giving it her all to get her on stage, but as a whole, she can be extremely antisocial. Then, if you do actually manage to become her friend, getting her to carry her end of the friendship is a challenge, because most of the time she isn't quite sure what that weight is supposed to be. Relationships for her have always been touch and go, and she is scared and flighty when things start to get serious. So basically, being with her, in itself, is a roller coaster, but if you can push past that (as Don tried to do) you can actually have a decent relationship. And she does let people in. It's just a war to get in.

And that's Eva. Issues and all.

You know, as I was reading this, it makes me realize William should be feeling very special that they're such close friends.

I'm amazed that she took to him as much as she did. She usually doesn't do stuff like that.

I think it's mostly that he singled her out from when they first met. He made a point to say that he wanted to spend time with her from the get go. That really got to her for some reason.

I'm glad he did though. She needs more friends like him.

We definitely need to write more of them together.

Absolutely.

Although, all they're giving him are evil, angsty bunnies where she goes to see him right before she dies. *shakes fist*

They need more happy bunnies too.

You write that, I write a happy bunny?

Sounds good to me.

Totally Random, But

That makes me think of Anna. Eva sounds like a cool cat, btw.

That's true, but Eva is much more closed off than Anna is. She's very quiet, and very withdrawn.

If you want to read my stuff with her, this is the masterlist (http://community.livejournal.com/seasonoflovefic/411.html#cutid1) for all the fic over at [livejournal.com profile] seasonoflovefic.
