Another World (6/?)
ok, i'm really not killing aiden. because even though she's not my favorite character--her and christian--hee...cute! therefore, i'm not going to break the poor guy's heart by killing her. and this is my AU after all. *stomps foot* so there. however, this decree does not save her from mortal peril. *nods*
in other news...i seriously think they're my next
stagesoflove claim. i don't know how often they rotate, but yeah...

“Ryan, would you tell the woman she’s clearly over reacting?” Christian Taylor said as he spoke into the speaker phone sitting on his counter. He ran a hand through his dark hair, and when he caught the glare Melinda was giving him, threw her a wink.
“Melinda, you’re clearly over reacting,” Ryan Wolfe replied firmly through the speakers.
“You don’t even know what I’m over reacting about!” Melinda protested, her voice slightly more excited than it should have been.
“You’re right, but I’m actually at work right now, and can’t put much thought into this,” Ryan replied, “So I’m going to agree with whoever tells me to agree with them.”
“God, you two, this isn’t a joke,” she groaned, running her hand through her hair, “I think Danny’s back in Everworld.”
“What?” Ryan frowned.
“On the basis of the fact that he wasn’t in the apartment when she woke up this morning, and he’s not answering his phone,” Christian countered, and she shot him a look.
“What were you doing in Danny’s apartment, Mel?”
“It’s a long story.”
“Jarius stabbed her,” Christian filled in, and she shot him another look.
“Jarius?” Ryan began before he lowered his voice, “Jarius of Avalon, Jarius?”
“That’s the guy,” Christian nodded.
“None of this is important,” Melinda protested, “Remember those kids I told you about, the ones who were there and here at the same time.”
“You mean the ones that crossed back and forth,” Ryan replied, and Melinda nodded before continuing.
“Yeah. I ran into one of Danny’s friends this morning, and although he claims that he didn’t see Danny last night, he definitely crossed over right in front of me.”
“Crossed over, crossed over?” Ryan asked, “Or did that thing you were trying to explain to me, where their consciousness is either in Everworld or here, depending what’s going on over there?”
“The latter.”
“You sure?” Ryan asked.
“Positive,” Melinda replied, “He was about to tell me something, and then he just blanked, before and then looked at me and asked me what we were talking about. As though he was coming out of a trance.”
There was a long silence on the other end of the phone, before Ryan’s voice came back again, “So what are we supposed to do about it?”
“One of us needs to get over there and find out what the hell is going on,” Melinda replied, “And I can’t. I’ve got classes to teach.”
“Neither can I,” Ryan replied, “For the same reasons. Horatio’s not going to spontaneously give me days off without a good reason.”
Melinda turned on Christian, and he cringed, “Can it wait?”
“How long?” she asked.
“Tomorrow morning?” he said, “I’ve kind of got plans for tonight.”
“Like—”
“Dinner with an important client?”
“You’re a street magician,” Melinda countered.
“Can I go now?” Ryan’s voice crackled up at them.
“Yes,” Melinda and Christian both replied at the same time, before Ryan said his goodbyes and hung up.
“Anyway, you’re a street magician,” Melinda continued, “You don’t have clients, let alone have dinner with them.”
“Really hot date?” Christian said, a hopeful tone in his voice. She gave him a look, and he continued, “Look, it’s this friend Danny set me up with, and she’s hawt.”
“How many dates have you been on?”
“This will be date number four,” Christian replied, “I don’t want to stand her up, Melinda.”
“Fine,” she said, placing one hand on her hip as she leaned against the counter, “But no nookie.”
“Melinda!” Christian replied, “Why not?”
“After the date your ass is going back to Everworld,” Melinda sighed, “We need to get a handle on this as soon as possible, Chris. You know that.”
“Yeah,” Christian admitted, defeated, “So where we doing this?”
“Danny’s?” she asked, “One place we know no one’s gonna walk in on us.”
“Alright,” Christian replied, “I’ll be there after I drop Aiden off, alright?”
“Aiden?” Melinda said with a smirk, “That her name?”
“Yup,” Christian replied, “You know, it might be very hard to—control—myself.”
Melinda leveled him with a look, and he gave her a smile, “But I’ll do my best.”
“You’d better,” she sighed.

“You alright?” Aiden asked, nudging him gently as he walked her home after dinner. They had had fun together, and it had been a good evening, but the entire night he seemed like his mind had been somewhere else. He turned to her, a confused look on his face.
“Me? I’m fine,” he replied, giving her a smile, “Why do you ask?”
“I dunno,” she shrugged, “You just seem a little—distracted.” They reached her building, and he held the door open for her, the smile still on his lips.
“Distracted?”
“Yeah,” she said, walking ahead of him, talking over her shoulder, “Like you don’t have your eye on the prize.” She turned and gave him a smirk, and he grinned at her, shaking his head.
I’m gonna kill Melinda. “I wasn’t distracted,” he began as they stopped at her door. She turned to face him, his arms slipping around her waist.
“Really?” she said, her arms sliding loosely around his neck.
“OK, maybe I was a little distracted—”
“That’s what I thought.”
“—by the crazy beautiful woman sitting across from me,” he murmured, starting to nibble slightly at her neck. She laughed at that, and then pulled away from him so that she could look him in the eye.
“You’re more full of shit than Messer is sometimes, you know that?”
“Ouch, Aide,” he cringed, “I am nowhere near as cheesy as Danny can be.”
“Uh-huh,” she grinned, before nudging him slightly, “What’s really bothering you?”
He took a deep breath, before letting go of her, and shifting his hands to his pockets, “I have to go out of town for a few days.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow,” he replied quickly, and she gave him a look.
“And you were gonna tell me—?”
“That’s what I was trying to figure out,” he grinned sheepishly, “It was really sudden, just came up.”
“Just came up?” she said skeptically.
“Family thing,” he said, which was partially true, but knew that Aiden could very possibly see that this was a load of bullshit.
“Oh,” she nodded, “I get it; I get it.” She took his arm and started to pull him back into her, closing the space between them, “It’s OK.” There was a bit of silence for a moment, and his hands slid back onto her waist, pulling her in for a soft kiss. When it broke, she spoke up again.
“You know, since we’re not going to be seeing each other for a while,” she began, giving him an innocent look, “Maybe we should—extend our date a bit?”
His eyebrows rose, and but then he remembered what he had told Melinda. “That may not be the best idea,” he began before she cut him off in a slow kiss. When that broke, he leaned into her pushing her against the door, continuing to protest, “I probably should go.”
“Maybe,” she whispered, before giving him another kiss.
“I really should pack,” he murmured before kissing her again, one had sliding up to cup her face and dig back into her hair.
“You should,” she whispered, starting to fumble with the door handle, before she felt his other hand cover hers and stop her.
“In all seriousness, Aiden,” he murmured, not wanting to push this if the moment wasn’t right. They hadn’t exactly gotten this far yet. He’d wanted to, Lord how he’d wanted to, but they hadn’t. He didn’t want to push her if she wasn’t ready. Especially since there was a extremely big possibility he might not make it out of there alive. “I can’t spend the night.”
“That’s OK,” she replied, and he gave her a smile before letting her open the door.
