“You gonna tell me what the hell’s going on now?” Danny asked as they marched into his apartment. Melinda was ahead of him, and she rested her forehead against the heel of her hand for a second before responding.

“Pour me a strong drink first,” she sighed, walking towards his couch, “And don’t tell me you don’t have any, because I know you do.”

“Does it matter what kind?” he asked slowly, knowing now this was more serious than he had expected. She shook her head, and then watched as he walked out to the kitchen, and returned with two glasses filled with some kind of alcohol. She gulped down about half of it, before she started to speak, not needing him to prompt her again for information.

“The man who stabbed me was Jarius,” she said, looking him dead in the eye.

“Jarius?” Danny frowned, knowing that she was referring to the man who had been his right hand man during the years of war. He looked up at her, concern flashing in his blue eyes, “My Jarius? Why the hell would he—”

“I told him to,” she replied, “Every so often, Brigid gives him an assigned amount of time to come here and see me, keep me in the loop about what’s going on over there. We come and we talk, in the middle of the street, and he goes back. Today things got—heated.”

“So you told him to stab you?” he frowned, not getting the point.

“He was getting angry with me, and he had me up against the wall with his hand around my neck. I was getting ready to get back in control of the situation, when your buddy Flack showed up.”

“And you couldn’t very well show Jarius who’s boss with Flack around?” Danny said with a smirk, and she chose to ignore it.

“I told him to make it look like he was robbing me, and then to stab me and run,” she sighed, “I figured that the guy would chase him down, Jarius would slip back into Everworld, and then I would disappear.”

“But he didn’t leave you,” Danny said, the smirk softening to a smile.

“No, he didn’t,” Melinda rolled her eyes, downing the rest of her drink, “Despite the many times that I told him I was fine, and to go catch the guy.”

“Did you tell him,” he replied, referring to what she had done to him in the hospital room earlier, “Or did you just tell him?”

“Danny, I gave it everything I had, and he didn’t budge,” she replied, “It was kind of scary.”

Danny frowned, “That’s weird.”

“Tell me about it.”

“Maybe he’s immune to it or somethin’?” he sighed, running a hand through his hair.

“I’ve never heard of that,” Melinda frowned, shaking her head, “I should probably talk to Brigid about it, but that’s not the point.”

“Well, then what is the point?” he sighed, “I thought we were talking about how you got into the hospital.”

“How I got into the hospital was not why I needed a drink, Daniel,” she replied, switching to his given name. He knew things were serious, because generally speaking, she was usually more than happy to call him Danny.

He was the one who had it the easiest crossing over when it came to names. His name didn’t change much. Others had had it slightly harder. But when Melinda wasn’t calling him Danny, he knew that there was something going on.

“What’s going on over there?”

Melinda took a deep breath, “There’s an alien god over there now, but instead of taking sacrifices from the humans, he’s choosing his meals from among the gods.”

“That’s probably not going over well.”

“No,” Melinda said, and he could hear the hard anger started to fill her voice and he automatically moved back on the couch, “Loki, being an idiot as per usual, decided that he wanted out. So he sent Fenrir to fetch the gateway witch from the Old World, and bring her to him.”

“The original one.”

“Or the descendant of the original one, yes,” Melinda nodded, “She however, was more conniving and manipulating than he had anticipated, so now Ka Anor is the least of their problems.”

“What happened?” Danny demanded, and Melinda looked up at him, before closing her eyes and continuing.

“Jarius says that she brought in four of her friends from this world,” she sighed, “By having them there when she crossed over, and they were living this dual existence in both worlds until she died and they chose to crossover to Everworld.”

“If she’s dead, why is Ka Anor the least of their problems?” Danny frowned.

“The conniving bitch,” she said, and the hatred in Melinda’s voice was unmistakable, “Decided that she wanted to rule Everworld. She brought in an army with automatic weapons to basically destroy our world, Danny, our home.” Danny could see that she was getting very visibly upset, and he wanted to try and attempt to calm her down, but he didn’t know how that was going to work.

“Mel—take a couple deep breathes, alright?” he said, “You’re scarin’ me a bit.”

“I can’t calm down, Danny,” she said, giving him an incredulous look, “These friends of hers that she brought in the first time? They’re just kids, Danny. Teenagers. Or, at least, they were teenagers five years ago.”

“Five years?” Danny said, a look of anger crossing his face, “This has been going on for five years and we’re just finding out about it now?”

“Jarius was living in the outer plains, you know that,” Melinda replied, “It takes a long time for him to get information, and in this case, it was those kids, happening to stumble across his outpost.”

Danny sneered, “I’m surprised they were alive enough to make it that far. Especially without a guide to tell them where they were.”

“Oh, they have a guide.” The anger in Melinda’s voice dropped to utter venom, “Athena and Merlin have practically manipulated them into fighting for some kind of honor. Honor!” There was a bark of a laugh forced from her throat, and she shook her head, “You know as well as I do that ‘honor’ in that world died long before Senna Wales ever set foot in it.”

“Athena and Merlin,” Danny shook his head, “Why am I not surprised?” He shut his eyes at this point, not looking at her, but continuing to speak anyway, “But I still don’t think that explains why he was fighting with you, Melinda.”

She got up at this point, walking across the room, and staring at the wall for a second, before turning and leaning against it.

“He wants us to go back, Danny,” she sighed softly, “He wants us to go back and help them fight.”

“Go back?” Danny said, the look on his face one of confusion, “All of us?”

“All of us,” Melinda nodded, “All ten of you.”

“Why does he need us? The tribes are still—”

“The tribes are gone, Danny,” Melinda sighed, “After you all left, they just scattered. Some of them went underground, some blended into the other groups living in their area, others just—disappeared.” She sighed, “Jarius says that if you come back, there might be a chance—”

“A chance for what, Mel?” Danny shook his head, burying his face in his hands, “A chance that they won’t try and murder us for leaving them. A chance that they might come back and save the day? It’s never that fuckin’ simple.”

Melinda just looked at him, and shook her head, “I don’t know what to do, Danny.”

He just looked at her, a look of confusion on his face, waiting for her to continue.

“It’s not like I don’t feel it, you know?” she said, tears starting to come to her eyes, “I feel it every damn time someone opens the damn gateway, or destroys something that should be there, or shoots down a god—” her voice trailed off, and she started to shrink against the wall pulling herself down to the floor, “—And it hurts, God, it fuckin hurts.”

Danny came over to her and sat down next to her, pulling her against him. He didn’t know what to tell her. He didn’t feel it the same way she did, and then again, he couldn’t. He wasn’t connected to that world anymore, but he wasn’t going to deny that what she was telling him wasn’t breaking his heart. It was his home after all.

“I don’t think we can go back quite yet,” Danny whispered against her hair, feeling tears that had slipped from her eyes leak onto his shirt, “But I’ll make a few phone calls, see what other people think, alright?”

She nodded, before he pulled them up off the floor, and starting to walk her towards his bedroom, “You stay here tonight, alright, and I’ll drive you back to Princeton in the morning.”

She turned from him at this point, and tried to get towards the door, “No, I have classes tomorrow and stuff. I should go—” Danny held her still, before whispering to her as soothingly as he could manage.

“E-mail and cancel them. You were stabbed, after all, I don’t think the university would be expecting you to teach.”

“What about your job?”

“I have the day off tomorrow,” he replied, “Don’t worry about it, alright? Just rest up here, and I’ll take you home, OK?”

She stopped fighting him and nodded, letting him lead the way again, “OK.”

I should hit you or at least try to ignore this story, but I can't. And you're really starting to suck me into the 'Everworld' plot and I don't have the time or money to actually by the books. Damn you. And update, please...

Now why couldn't Melinda budge Flack? Interesting ...

I think I like Melinda. I do like the dynamic between her and Danny. And Danny's past becomes even more intriguing (I have a feeling I'll be using that word quite a lot.)
