Another World (1/?)
i know i said i wasn't going to start another WIP until i finished "Bang of the Gavel" but this isn't really a WIP, it's more of a bunch of related oneshots, and i'm too lazy to come up with separate titles for each of them, so it's all going to be part of one big fic. *nods*
also, there are going to be pairings, but i'm not quite sure how they're going to work yet, so just look at the characters list to see what kind of pairings are going to be in there.
Fandom: CSI/CSI: Miami/CSI:NY/Everworld

Disclaimer: If they're the characters of CSI:NY or listed here, I don't own it, and they belong to CBS or K. A. Applegate. However, if it's listed here, it is mine, so please don't use it without my permission.
“Danny?” Flack frowned when he saw his friend step off the elevator at Trinity General. He had been sitting there for over an hour, ever since he had rode in with the victim of a stabbing he had witnessed. He waited for her to be examined by the doctor, and Mac told him to stay with her in case he and Hawkes needed to ask her any questions, “What are you doing here? Something with Louie—”
“Nah, nah,” Danny shook his head at his friend’s concern, “I got a call that a friend of mine had been brought in with stab wounds. I’m her emergency contact.”
“You know Melinda Fitzgerald?” Flack frowned.
“Yeah,” Danny sighed, “That why you’re here? You handlin’ the case?”
“I saw the whole thing,” Flack replied, “Guy gets her against the wall, starts screamin’ at her, and when I jump in to try and break it up, he stabs her in the gut and takes off. I was alone so I couldn’t go runnin’ after the guy and leave her there bleedin’, so I call for a bus, and get her on the ambulance and all that, and when she gets outta surgery, I start to question her about him, and she tells me not to worry about it because she’s not pressin’ charges.”
When Danny’s face didn’t seem surprised, Flack gave his friend a look of confusion, “You knew she wouldn’t?”
“Melinda’s not the type to press charges,” Danny said with a helpless shrug, “She’s not a big fan of the prison system.”
“The guy almost killed her.”
Not exactly, Danny thought to himself before speaking, “I know. She’s probably just still in shock. I’ll talk to her.”
“Alright,” Flack nodded before Danny disappeared into the hotel room. The thick mass of curly brown hair looked up at him and gave him a smile, green eyes sparkling.
“Danny! What are you doing here?”
“You got yourself stabbed,” he replied, “I’m your emergency contact.”
She looked down with a soft blush, “Oh yeah. She looked up again, and caught Flack watching them through the glass window, “Well, now you can get me outta here.”
“Why would I do that?”
“Danny,” she sighed, “C’mon.”
“You know, Flack finds it kind of strange that you don’t want them to catch the guy who stabbed you,” Danny commented.
Melinda rolled her eyes, “They’re never going to catch him.” Danny tilted his head to the side slightly.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Something I can’t talk about here,” she said, her voice dropping slightly so that it was more urgent sounding, “Just know that I’m not pressing charges. It would be pointless, they’re never going to find him. Besides, you know better than I do that all the physical evidence that I was stabbed is going to be gone in a few hours anyway.”
“What are you aren’t you telling me, Melinda?” he asked, his voice shifting in tone as he sat down on her bed. The Staten Island accent faded a bit, and he started to sound more like the man he used to be. The warrior he used to be.
“Later,” she said softly, a look of concern on her face. Her eyes glanced over to where Flack was standing. She could tell by the way he was looking at her that he was looking for something to happen. Some admission of guilt that would tell him what was going on. She immediately put a brighter look on her face.
“Anyway—get me out of here,” she whispered, nodding towards the man on the other side of the wall, hoping Danny would get the message, “You're friend's creeping me out a bit.”
Danny glanced over his shoulder with a smirk, “That? He just likes you. You should consider taking him up on dinner. Might have a good time.”
“Last guy you set me up with was one of the most disgusting eaters I've ever seen,” she said, making a face, “Besides, I don't need you worrying about my sex life.”
“Melinda. Seriously, I'm worried about you not having any friends out there and everything,” Danny sighed, his hand falling on her thigh, “What if they can't get me on the phone?”
“Danny. This is me we're talking about,” she replied, referring to the fact that she was perfectly fine and sitting in a hospital bed, “And I don't need your help finding someone to sleep with me. I can do it just fine on my own.” His hand started to stroke her thigh slightly, but he didn't seem to notice and just smirked at her.
“Yeah, and when was the last time you got laid, Fitz?” he said, using the nickname that only he was allowed to use, “You don't use it, you lose it.”
“I don't need pick up lines to get a guy to sleep with me,” she said, feeling his hand start to slide further up her thigh and felt him lean in to her.
“You don’t? You use your—talents?”
“Uh-huh,” she sighed, lowering her voice to a whisper as he got closer.
“And how does that work for you?” he murmured, his voice dropping as well.
“Pretty well.”
“Does it?”
“Yup,” she sighed, her lips centimeters from his, “I'm doing it right now.” He quickly glanced down at where they were, before jumping back like he had burned himself.
“Ho!” he said, running a hand through his hair, “Never do that again, Mel. You know I don’t like it when you fuck with my head.”
“But it proved my point didn’t it?”
“Yes, yes it did,” Danny sighed, knowing full well that she wouldn’t use her abilities to manipulate a man into bed, but willing to let it go because she obviously didn’t want to talk about it. He was about to ask her about work when the doctor came in and left the door open, leaving Flack to listen in on the other end of the conversation.
“Alright, Miss Fitzgerald,” the doctor said, giving her a soft smile, “Let’s see how you’re doing and when we can send you home.”
Danny got out of the way and let the doctor examine her. He watched as the doctor pulled back in surprise, “It’s practically healed already.”
“I must have good genes,” Melinda shrugged, and the doctor laughed.
“I guess so,” the doctor nodded, “Well, you seem healed enough to release you into Detective Messer’s hands.” She turned to the other man and gave him a nod, “If you could just step outside to fill out some paperwork?”
“No problem,” Danny nodded before following the woman. Flack caught his arm as the door shut behind him and gave him a look.
“So?” Flack frowned.
“She won’t press charges,” Danny replied, as the doctor handed him a clipboard, “She’s very set in her ways, Flack, what do you expect me to do?”
Flack glanced through the window as she stood up and walked towards the bathroom for some privacy as she changed, “It’s amazing that she’s ready to go home that fast. There was a lot of blood at the scene.”
“She’s got good genes,” Danny replied off-handedly, “I don’t think the guy who did this to her is going to be much trouble, Flack. I’m pretty sure this was just a one time thing.”
“The guy still attacked her though. She’s probably going to want to sue or something”
“She’s not into that kind of thing.”
“Suing?”
“Yeah,” Danny replied, “She just wants to be left alone, alright?” He handed the clipboard back to the doctor before heading back to the door of the hospital room to find Melinda waiting for him. “You ready to go?”
“Yeah,” Melinda nodded. She then turned and gave Flack a smile, “Thanks again, Detective Flack.” Flack just nodded and watched her and Danny walk out, wondering how the hell Danny knew someone like her.
And why he wasn’t being more protective?

“The wound itself was very shallow,” the doctor explained to Mac and Hawkes when they arrived at the hospital, “She didn’t even need stitches. We just bandaged her up and sent her home.”
After the doctor left, Hawkes turned to the two other men with him in confusion, “There was way to much blood at that scene to be just a shallow cut.”
“And I saw the stabbing myself, Mac,” Flack continued, “He got into her to the hilt.”
“So you’re saying something’s not quite right?” Mac said, looking at both men.
“She doesn’t want to press charges,” Flack said, “She wants us to just let this guy go.”
Hawkes gave him a look of confusion, “Why would she want that?”
“I don’t know,” Flack sighed, “But something really screwy is going on. Danny didn’t even seem upset about the fact that she’s not pressing charges.”
“Danny’s involved in this?” Mac said, looking at him in alarm.
“He was the one they discharged her to,” Flack replied, “He knows her.” Flack wasn’t going to add in the fact that he saw them nearly making out there on the hospital bed. He didn’t think that mattered much. “Danny claims she just wants to be left alone.”
Mac processed what the man was saying for a second, considering what his options were, “It’s not as though we have any solid leads. The evidence we found was inconclusive at best.”
“Mac, don’t tell me you’re just going to let this go?” Flack protested, a look of concern on his face, “The guy could have killed her for Christ’s sake.”
“I’m not saying we’re going to let it go,” Mac replied, “I’m just saying let’s see what happens, and where the evidence goes. She may just be scared to talk.”
Flack was prepared to protest again, but didn’t. Instead he just followed Mac and Hawkes back to the parking garage, keeping to himself that Melinda Fitzgerald didn’t look like she was scared.

I can totally see Danny saying "Ho!" I laughed so hard when I saw that.
