After stewing about the finale for nearly a month:
I'm thinking--OK, the demon said there's more than one generation of "children" and Sam and Dean found out that not all the mothers of his "children" were killed in a fire so that got me thinking--
Firstly, was Mary one of the previous generation?
Secondly, Do you think that he only killed the mothers who were also "children" themselves? Maybe not only mothers were killed, but also fathers too, for some of them? I know that Jess was killed because the demon thought she would hold Sam back, and he sort of alluded to the same reason for Mary, but maybe the reason why Mary would hold Sam back is because she already knew of the demon's plans for her son, and she would try and prevent that from happening?
Also, did John know by the time he died that Mary had some kind of connection to the demon? It was said that he knew about the demon's plans for Sam, but through figuring that out, did he find out about Mary as well? Was why he didn't tell Dean about the plans not just for Sam's sake, but because he didn't want whatever memories he had of Mary to be clouded by the fact that she was related to what he had spent his whole life hunting?
And fourthly, do you think Sam will tell Dean about what the demon showed him? Or will he keep it to himself?
Ugh. The finale left too many questions. Supernatural is not supposed to make my head hurt. That's a job for LOST and Heroes.
