Rachel Romano tossed her long blond hair over her shoulder as she poked her way around the Miami Dade Crimelab. She was supposed to be looking for Ryan, but really, she would talk with anyone at this point. Well, as much talking as she ever did, but she had to say, for a mute person who refused to use ASL unless she had to, she communicated pretty damn well. Sometimes, charades was more effective at communicating anyway.
And sometimes people just needed to learn to read her damn mind already.
She had started to wander her way past the locker room, when she heard a voice call out her name from inside. She stopped just shy of the edge of the doorframe, and stepped back. Eric Delko gave her a smile, and grinned back at him, waving eagerly.
“Haven’t seen you in a while,” he said, moving closer to her so that he was standing in the doorway as well. She gave him a look that showed she was equally upset with this before pointing to him, shaking her head no, and making a motion as though she were banging a gavel.
“I—no—bang—I haven’t been in court?” he guessed, and watched as she nodded quickly, tapping herself on the nose.
“Yeah, well that can be a good thing,” Delko smirked, and Rachel started to look upset, and he hurried to correct himself, “Not because I don’t want to see you. Because I don’t like being in court.
Rachel gave him an ‘uh-huh’ look, before crossing her arms in front of her chest.
“So what are you doing here, anyway?” he asked, and she uncrossed her arms, and made a slight growling noise in the back of her throat as she distorted her face into a snarl and made a clawing motion with her hands.
“Wolfe?” he asked, and she smirked before tapping herself on the nose again. “I think he’s out at a scene.” The look on her face dropped, and Eric smirked. “You two have plans?”
Rachel made a motion as though she was eating, and he nodded, “Supposed to have lunch?”
She nodded, before shrugging. She looked up suddenly, and tapped him lightly on the shoulder for a second, making sure she had his attention. She tugged at her ear, and then pointed at the can of air freshener sitting on one of the sinks in the locker room. He frowned at her for a second, confused.
“Sounds like air freshener?” She rolled her eyes and shook her head no, before repeating the tugging motion on her ear, and pointing to the brand name on the can.
“Sounds like Lysol?” he said. He blinked for a second before it clicked, “Oh, Marisol?” She tapped herself on the nose and he continued, “How’s Marisol?”
She nodded yes, and he nodded slowly. “Good. She’s doing better. Doctors say she might be in remission soon.” She gave him a thumbs up and he nodded.
“So how ‘bout you? How you doin?’” Rachel made an ‘eh’ face, moving her hand from side to side in a ‘so-so’ motion. “Still living with Rowan?” he asked, and gave him a more dramatic eye roll and nodded.
“You should move out,” he smirked, “Get your own place.” Rachel’s eyes bugged for a second, before she pointed to herself, shook her head no, and then rubbed her fingers together.
“You have no money?” She nodded, and he nodded as well.
“I sympathize.”
“Eric?” Natalia Boa Vista’s voice came from around the corner, sounding slightly concerned. When she saw Rachel, she was slightly startled, but relieved, “I was gonna say—I thought you were talking to yourself there for a second.”
Eric laughed and shook his head no, “Natalia, this is Rachel Romano. She’s mute. Rachel, this is Natalia Boa Vista. She works in DNA.”
Rachel gave the woman a smile and shook her hand. “Nice to meet you,” Natalia nodded, “Can I ask how you two know each other?”
“She’s works in the courthouse as the stenographer,” Eric replied, “She’s also an old friend of Ryan’s.”
“Oh,” Natalia nodded with a smile, “I guess we just haven’t really had the chance to bump into each other yet.”
Rachel nodded slowly, when suddenly a wave of nausea ripped through her. She started to double over when Eric caught her.
“Ray?” he frowned, “You alright?” She looked up at Natalia, and then past her, to the end of the hallway, where the elevator had seemingly just ripped in half, exposing a white void behind it. Then suddenly, three large men stepped through the void, and her eyes went wide with fear.
They were about seven feet tall, clad head-to-toe in Viking style armor, but Rachel knew from experience that they were no Vikings. She pushed against Eric’s shoulders, and pulled on Natalia’s arms, trying to tell them to go, but another round of pain ripped through her, and she felt her knees buckle, leaning on Eric to support her.
Natalia turned, and her eyes widened when she saw the men who were standing behind her. She started to move out of the way, but she didn’t move fast enough, and one of the men swept his arm against her throwing her into the glass wall of the trace lab behind her. Another took the butt of his sword and knocked against the side of Eric’s head sending both him and Rachel sprawling to the floor. Rachel’s fingers clawed against the floor as one of the men grabbed her ankle and swung her into the air.
“Lookee ‘ere boys,” he laughed, a sinister laugh that made her stomach churn, “I’ve caught a Fish.” The men behind her chuckled, and Rachel was starting to feel dizzy from the blood rushing to her head. Her bleary vision focused on the body next to her, and realized that though she was upside down, she was at just the right level to reach over and—
“Damn bitch!” the man roared in pain before tossing Rachel back to the floor she landed near the unconscious Eric, slightly dazed, and trying to get the world to go right-side up again. The man was doubled over, clutching at his crotch before, motioning to the men behind him. “Let’s just grab the whelp and go.” Rachel watched as one of the men hefted Eric’s limp form onto his shoulders, and the man, who seemed to be the leader, loomed over her.
“I should kill you, wench,” he replied, landing a sound kick to her stomach, sending her tumbling further down the hallway, “But I won’t. You might—satisfy my appetite later, should we meet again.” Rachel blew her hair away from her face and fixed a glare on the man as they walked away from her.
Ryan and Calleigh had heard the shattering glass as they walked back into the crimelab from a scene, and their hands immediately went for their sidearms. By the time they reached the elevator, the man carrying Eric had just disappeared into the vortex that the elevator had become. They both looked down the end of the hallway to find Rachel scrambling to her feet, and Tripp, who had arrived on the scene from the opposite direction, leaning over an unconscious Natalia, making sure that there hadn’t been any major damage done by the broken glass.
Ryan’s eyes met that of the captors, and they widened when he realized who they were. He cut off Calleigh’s advance, stretching an arm out in front of her. “Stay back,” he ordered and the blond gave him a look of confusion.
“Ryan, why—?”
The man gave Ryan a wink, before blowing Calleigh a quick kiss. “See you on the other side, wolf,” he growled, before stepping through the barrier.
Ryan flickered back to Rachel for a second, but all he could see was a flash of blond as the woman did a running dive into the hole after them.
I’ll stay with him flitted past his ears, and he gave a slight nod, that he knew she probably couldn’t see. Then he felt his feet start to slip from under him, the vacuum pulling him towards the open gateway in front of him. He felt Calleigh start to slide with him, and he pushed at her back.
“Calleigh, go!” he gasped, but nothing was working. Things just kept slipping until he felt himself hit the ground, and everything faded into black.
***
When Ryan opened his eyes, he was sitting in his apartment. It was still dark outside. His head really hurt. He needed to make some phone calls. First one was to Rachel’s cell. She mainly used it more for texting than calling, but it was an emergency, and she was going to speak to him.
Call went straight to voicemail. Didn’t even ring. Which worried him, because Rachel never turns her phone off. He then called her apartment. He got her roommate, Rowan.
“Dude,” Rowan Toth began, yawning sleepily, “I thought she was with you. She texted me, said she was having lunch with you and I haven’t seen or heard from her since.”
“You sure?”
“Positive, man,” Rowan shook his head, “Rachel ain’t here.” Ryan hung up, waited a minute, then called Delko.
“Hey, you’ve reached Eric. I’m not here right now, but if you leave your name and number I’ll get back to you.”
He hung up before it could get to the beep, and sat on his bed for a second weighing his options. There were three very good sign right there that things were just not good.
He decided he needed a fourth.
He got in his car and drove over to the crimelab, and ran into Natalia just as she was coming out. She had a few butterfly bandages on her face, and she there were red lines running elsewhere on her skin. “Natalia,” he said as he stopped her, giving her a look of concern, “What happened?”
“Some asshole threw me into one of the walls,” she replied, her eyes flashing, “Guy could of killed me when he—” she stopped as Ryan started running off towards the inside of the building, and she turned around, giving him a frown of confusion. “—hey! Wait!”
Ryan rushed into the building, pushing past people as he went. When he finally reached the hallway where it all had happened, he stared in disbelief at the destruction in front of him.
Fuck.
He paced back and forth slightly for a second, before pulling his cell phone out of his pocket and quickly dialing a number.
“Mel? Yeah, it’s me. We’ve got a problem.”

Terrific opening and Rachel is fabulous! I'm not surprised she didn't want to wait.
And sometimes people just needed to learn to read her damn mind already.
I loved her charade for 'Ryan'.
