“What’s going on?” Christopher demanded as he walked into the main room of the castle, Flack and Lindsay close behind him. Jalil Sherman looked from the window the people who had just walked in and then nodded back towards the pane in front of them.

“Look for yourself.”

The new arrivals moved in close, and saw the smoke and fire that was rising up from the houses of the village. It was one of the most horrific sights that Flack and Lindsay and ever seen, and they suddenly wished that they hadn’t. Occasionally screams would rise from one of the houses and the sound of automatic weapons would fill the air, either silencing them or making them worse.

“Jarius arrived a few minutes before you did,” David Levin replied, walking into the room holding various swords and other weapons, “He’s attracted some of the fire for now. We had some advanced notice so we tried to get in as many people as we could, but there are still people trapped down there.”

“Jarius said to get as many people behind the castle walls,” Christopher replied.

“The Sennites are right at our front door,” Jalil replied, crossing his arms across his chest, “How does he expect us to do that?”

“He said get creative,” Christopher replied with a smirk.

“Get creative?” April O’Brien sighed, speaking up from the corner of the room. A smile flashed across her face. “He wants us to use the tunnels.”

A similar grin grew on David’s face, before he tossed Jalil and April a sword, “We’re gonna have to move fast. They’re already looting the houses.”

The four people started to leave, before Flack spoke up, “You’re not gonna just leave us here to sit on our asses, are you?”

David turned and gave them a confused look, “Who are you?”

“This is Flack and Lindsay,” Christopher replied, “They’re Old Worlders that got picked up by a group of slavers.” He then turned to the two other people, “You two wanna help? We really don’t need a group of scientists slowing us down.”

“Actually, she’s the scientist,” Flack corrected, “But she’s also a homicide detective as am I. We are more than capable of taking care of ourselves. So again, you’re not just going to leave us here to sit on our asses, are you?”

David looked them up and down for a second before tossing both of them a sword, “Flack, go with Christopher and April, Lindsay come with me and Jalil,” he leveled each of them with a look for a second before continuing, “Don’t get lost.”

The tunnels that the others were referring to were a group of underground tunnels that extended under the castle to the floor of every house in the village. They were made for emergency situations like this one, so if a family ever couldn’t escape their home they had a way out and to sanctuary. They were mostly going along the tunnels at this point and seeing if there were any families still trapped in their homes.

Flack, April and Christopher hadn’t encountered many at this point, but there were a few, and they pulled them down through the hidden holes in the floor, and sent them in the direction of the castle, and they just kept making their way further into the village. They finally reached the last house on their end of the route, and both of them watched apprehensively as Christopher pounded up on the wooden panel above them.

There was a scuffling above them, and light shone into the tunnel, followed by the face of a woman with long blond hair.

“We have to move quickly,” she hissed to them, before handing a small boy down through the hole, “I think they’re coming.” Christopher handed off the boy to April, and then the little girl that was lowered through to Flack. There was a pounding from another point in the room, and the woman looked up, before moving to recover the hole.

“Adela, what are you doing?” Christopher frowned.

“They are here. Forget me, just go!” With that the tunnel was plunged back into darkness again. April looked at Christopher, the young boy still in her arms, and then to Flack, who was holding the little girl.

“I’m not leaving her,” Christopher replied, and April looked like she was about to say something, but then he cut her off, “I’ll stay with her. You guys take them back.” There was the sound of someone being smacked above them, and Christopher lowered his voice to an urgent whisper, “Go!”

April nodded, and started to lead the way back, taking the boy with her. Flack started to walk away, and the young girl, confused that they were leaving Adela behind, started to speak up.

“Adel—” Flack’s hand landed over her mouth, and shushed her softly leaning forward to whisper in her ear.

“We’re not leaving her, alright?” he said, “We’re just getting a head start. She’ll be there a little later. But we gotta be really quiet, alright?”

The little girl nodded, before burying her head in his shoulder as he started to pick up the pace, moving quickly to catch up with April.

Lindsay found Flack sitting in with the rest of the refugees, the little girl still in his arms, now fast asleep. She gave him a confused look.

“What?” he frowned.

“I never took you as a guy that’s good with kids, Flack,” she sighed, sitting down next to him, he smiled down at the girl, and shrugged his shoulders.

“Her name is Greta,” he replied, “She made me promise to look after her until her sister got back.”

Lindsay smiled at that, “Guess you were her knight in shining armor, huh?”

Flack laughed, “My cousin has a little girl who is about her age. Looks a lot like her, too.” He looked down at her for a second, before looking back up again, “Know if Christopher’s back yet?”

Lindsay shook her head, “No. He’s still down there as far as we know.”

“He seemed pretty determined to stay. Maybe it was his girlfriend or something.

“Maybe,” Lindsay hesitated for a second, before starting to speak again. “What are we going to do, Flack? I mean, what are we even doing here?”

“I don’t know,” he replied.

“How are we supposed to get home?” Lindsay frowned, he could tell by the tone of her voice that she was speaking rhetorically, “We’re stuck in this place and we have no way in or out, or of even protecting ourselves. What the hell are we supposed to do?”

He shrugged, “Jalil said that the four of them said that when Senna died they could chose whether or not they wanted to go home or stay here.”

“So how would that work for us?” Lindsay replied, “We can’t kill Danny, Flack.”

“I know that,” he replied, “Maybe there’s another way. Another way out. Maybe if I go talk to Melinda when I’m over there, she could help us figure a way out.”

“You know how to find her?” Lindsay asked, “Danny said she lived in Princeton.”

“She’s a professor there, and I got all her contact information from when we were investigating this whole thing, so maybe—”

“How do you know you’ll be able to make it there before you come back over here, though?” Lindsay sighed, “We don’t know how long these things last or anything like that.”

“Jalil said that as long as we’re asleep over here, we’re over there.”

“That doesn’t give us a very—secure—window, especially in a place like this.”

“But we gotta try, Linds,” Flack sighed, looking up at where the other woman was standing, “We can’t just stay here forever.”

“I know,” she murmured, before a sound came up through the crowd, stirring the girl in Flack’s arms. Big blue eyes wandered over the crowd, and then lit up when a familiar face came into view.

“Adela!” She leaped from Flack and ran into the arms of her sister, and a small smile crossed Lindsay’s face.

“I have a feeling they don’t get to many days like this.”

Jarius found her standing on one of the topmost towers of the castle, just staring out onto the hills and fields below them. The sun was setting in the distance, and she was actually facing the light. Even though it stung her eyes, she was enjoying the better view. If she was looking away from the sun, she would see the smoke and burning remnants of what the village had once been, and the hills of Avalon that lay behind her were much more beautiful to look upon.

He cleared his throat slightly, to announce his presence and not catch her unawares. She turned and gave him a smile, before turning her eyes back to the fields below her.

“Was the food we offered to your liking, milady?” he asked, walking over to stand beside her.

“Everything was delicious,” Lindsay nodded, giving him a small smile, “Thanks for letting us stay here.”

“It’s the least I could do for those close to such a dear friend of mine,” Jarius replied, and she looked confused for a second before understanding crossed her face.

“Danny,” she sighed, “If you don’t mind my asking, how do you know him?”

“That is a story I think he himself would rather tell, on his own terms,” he said with a nod, “But he is like a brother to me.” Lindsay nodded, and he could see the fatigue and stress on her face, “You should get some rest. You’ve had a long day.”

“I don’t think I’d be able to sleep,” she said softly, “It’s so quiet here.”

“It’s noisy where you come from.”

“Very,” she said with a laugh.

“I see,” Jarius nodded, a gentle smile on his face, before following her eyes out to the horizon, “You enjoy this view?”

“It’s amazing,” she grinned, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“its sacred land,” Jarius replied, “Any one who sheds blood simply to kill is cursed to never be able to set foot on those hills again without fear of he himself being killed. Often times he doesn’t even make it that far because if the people who live in the village are likely to grab them, flog them and then hang them for their crime.”

“Why is it sacred?”

“The legend goes that the knights of Avalon, such as myself, found the land to be so beautifully inspiring, that they did not want to tarnish it with the blood of man,” he explained, before turning to her, “But in reality, a great battle was fought here, in the beginning of the order, where many men died, right on these hills. The knights don’t fight here out of respect for their memory.”

Lindsay just watched him as he spoke, the last of the sun finally disappearing from the sky, and the world slipping into darkness. He then reached out his hand to her, placing it on the small of her back.

“You really should try to get some rest, milady,” he said, a soft smile crossing his features, “The hills will still be there when you wake in the morning.”

She gave him a bashful smile, before letting him lead the way, suddenly feeling a lot safer than when she had arrived in this strange world.
