*headache*

i know i'm completely going out on a limb here, but is there by any chance someone who can explain to me in simple terms Plantinga's concept of transworld depravity?

if not, no big, but if you can, i will owe you greatly.

i'll be online, if you have one of my sns.

Essentially the idea that in any possible world where a given person has substantial free will, that person will necessarily commit at least one immoral act.

Taken from here (http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/andrea_weisberger/)

Glad I could help :)

Hadn't the vaguest idea what you were talking about but I'm glad you asked because that sounds like a very interesting theory. If I may, what area of philosophy are you studying?

it's a seminar my school offers called God, Freedom and Evil. it's examining whether or not it's logical for God as modern theology percieves him to be (omnipotent, omniscient and wholly good) could coexist with evil, and the various defenses for that idea.

it's actually a pretty interesting class, but i'm going into it with only my catholic elementary school knowledge of theology, and no philosphy experience, so it's giving me a bit of a headache.

Jumping in the deep end! What attracted you to the course? It sounds fascinating - I could be jealous. I was looking at Divine Command Theory last month as part of my course and I've done some reading on my own over the last few years; I'd love to go further. Unfortunately there aren't that many religion courses available through my uni but I'm about start the first of these next week. The philosophy course I'm taking is something of an introductory course, covering a variety of topics so that will help - if I remember any of it. My memory goes to pieces when I'm like this. And right now I'm tired so I'm rambling.

well, i'm in the honors program, so we get opportunties for all these different seminars, and one of them happened to be this one. i wanted to do the one on exploring the shakespearan era through his plays, but it was being offered at the same time as another i, unfortunately, had to take so--i decided to take this one instead! i've always been kind of interested in different religous philosphies, so the material is interesting, it's just been a bit--overwhelming.

Now, that also sounds fascinating! One of my problems with uni - deciding which courses to take. There's so much I could be learning ...

Overwhelming? I hear that. Anything to do with philosophy seems to go that way. I think headaches are a compulsory addition to any philosophy studies!

i'm not really a caffeine drinker, but it helped me make sense of it all last night...for a few hours at least, until it really kicked in and i became a caffeinated mess.

I can't remember the last time I had a significant dose of caffeine; who knows what effect it would have on me now. My sleep cycle's messed up enough as it is ... would it help to talk it out? Are there any students in the course you talk things over with?

yeah, and he does a good job of explaining it in class. except when it comes down to writing it and getting support from the text is where i have the trouble transfering ideas from brain to paper. or translating the stuff he didn't explain.

The worst part! That all sounds frustratingly familiar at the moment. And I'm giving up on it (again) and going to bed. It's past midday here and I've been awake since 4 p.m. yesterday. I should have been in bed by dawn ... good luck!

oh, you too! get some sleep.
