Derek is already frustrated by the time he returns to their room, and he can likely feel Elena’s amusement before he even walks in the door. Not that she ever opts to take pleasure in her husband’s pain, but more that she’s learned her mate’s moods at this point, and for something to come on that suddenly, it certainly can’t be all that serious. She waits until the door opens and she sees his face, studying the contours of it, before smirking.

“What now?”

“Why is every convinced we are going to have another girl?”

She laughs, one hand moving to rest on her very pregnant belly before tipping her head to the side. “Precedent, maybe?”

Derek moves to sit on the edge of the bed with a huff, reaching to disrobe himself of his court attire and transition to something more comfortable for the evening. “Every decoration in that nursery is just slightly skewed for a female occupant, when we have no way of knowing for sure if this is a boy or a girl. It could just as easily be a boy.”

“I know, darling,” she sighs. “You’ve said that for every child we’ve had thus far.” And aside from Patience, who was conceived before Derek and Elena even knew each other, so therefore he couldn’t have been certain of their gender, they had all been girls. He manages to read between the lines of that statement, and gives her a brief look, making his way closer to rest his hand over the crest of her stomach.

“But this time, I have faith that this one isn’t going to let me down.” He receives a look from his wife at that one, and he sighs. “You know what I mean.”

“Do I?”

Derek sighs as he pushes himself up. “You know I love all of them dearly.”

“I do,” she sighs softly as she gets to her feet to meet them. “And I know you will love this one just as well regardless of what gender they are.” She lifts a hand to brush gently against the side of his face. “But I also know how badly you want a boy.”

“I do,” he admits with a small pout. “There are certain things about raising a boy that I always wanted to share with a son of my own.”

“I know,” she says as she leans in to kiss him. “And I want that with you.”

“Then there is a way that we can perhaps apply mind over matter?” He raises an eyebrow. “Dress the nursery as though it will be a boy.”

She laughs. “As though if you will it to be a boy, it will become one?”

“Maybe,” he grins. “It can’t hurt, can it?”

“I suppose it can’t,” she smirks in return, before turning to pull him back to bed. “I’ll speak to Melissa about rearranging the nursery in the morning.”

Derek smiles as he follows his wife’s lead, leaning in to kiss her again as he helps her settle into bed. Not long after, he shifts to settle in behind her, resting one hand over the curve of her stomach to keep her close. “I love you. And I do love our family.”

“I know,” she murmurs as she lifts her hand to brush against the side of his face. “And I really do hope this one is a boy.” Especially considering it will likely be her last.

“Whatever it is, I will be fine,” he replies, pressing a kiss to her temple. “I promise.”

“Good,” she sighs as she closes her eyes, preparing to drift off to sleep. “I love you too.” And with that, they are soon both asleep.
