Alice Price-Healy isn’t exactly the poster child of letting things go. It’s kind of hard to claim otherwise when you spend most of your life jumping through dimensions in search of the husband you lost. Still, she’s not an idiot, and she knows the writing on the wall when she sees it. As much as Claudia loves him, Noah was never made for their life. And without Claudia’s knowledge and expertise to protect them, he and Stiles are at risk. He’ll probably be safer away from the family, even if it goes against every instinct she has.

She waits for him to put Stiles down for the night – with Claudia in the hospital, wrangling a four year-old off to sleep is easier said than done. But eventually he comes downstairs and looks her in the eye, which she has to give him credit for. Telling her something she doesn’t want to hear and looking her in the eye as they do it takes balls no matter who’s doing it.

“I can’t do this, Alice.”

“I know.”

“She’s dying.”

“I know.” She still may have a few years as her brain deteriorates but there’s no cure for what that cryptid’s poison did to her. And it’ll get worse before it finally gives her any rest. She swallows hard, before resting her hands on her hip. “What do you plan to do?”

“I’m going to bring Claudia home, and I’ll take care of her until she’s gone. But my son isn’t going to grow up in this. I’m not going to let you turn him into some kind of hunter.”

She’d protest that not all of them were hunters – Alice is a special case, always has been, to a point – but she doesn’t argue, at least not in the way he’s expecting. “You know making him ignorant to it isn’t going to make it go away.”

“Maybe not,” he crosses his arms in front of his chest, determined to hold his ground. “But thousands of people get by day-to-day without running headfirst into trouble. I’d like to try and manage that for him.”

She wants to try and tell him that the Prices don’t do this as a choice – its in their blood, but he’ll discover this about his son sooner or later. She can see what he’s saying in between the words however, and she swallows. “You want us to stay away. You do realize you’re taking away family.”

“I can’t do this with him too.” Noah is quiet for a moment. “It’s bad enough we’re watching this happen to Claudia.”

“Explaining that to the mice is going to be real interesting.”

“Yeah, well, that’ll be on your end.”

Alice pauses. Her eyebrow raises in a tentative moment of curiosity. Then she laughs. Noah looks confused, and she doesn’t blame him. He married into this. He doesn’t realize how the mice worked. “Oh, the mice aren’t leaving.”

“I said – ”

“You said you didn’t want him hunting.” Alice holds up a finger. “You can’t get rid of the mice. They’ll come back no matter what – our family is their religion and they’re not going to abandon you.”

Noah looks exasperated, and she doesn’t blame him. She’d be exasperated too. The mice are exhausting but they also keep track of her family’s legacy so she’s definitely going to take advantage of the fact that the mice will remember everything to tell her late.

“Do you think I can convince them to keep out of sight?”

“If you properly bribe them. Better buy a lot of curly fries.”

Noah sighs, rubbing his eyes, but in the end he nods. He knows how important the mice are, and he knows that Claudia loves them. He will figure it out. “Any other conditions that you want to place?”

She pauses for a moment, before shaking her head. “I’d rather you didn’t do this at all. And I think you should be aware that eventually, he’s going to figure it out.” Beacon Hills isn’t exactly cryptid free. As it is, Alice is going to be asking Talia for help. “But I’ll stay away, until you’re ready to change that.”

“Thank you.”

Some of the tension drains from him, his shoulders sagging a bit as the reality of losing his wife hits him, which is the other reason why Alice isn’t riding him for this. She knows what it’s like to lose the love of your life. While she’s still searching for hers, she knows that that’s not going to be an option for Noah. She makes her way closer, before resting one hand on his shoulder gently.

“You’ll figure it out. It won’t be easy, but you will.”

“I hope you’re right.”

Alice sighs, before nodding and going to pack up. “Last batch of cookies are on the counter. My parting gift.”

“I’m sure Stiles will love them.”

“You run into any trouble, you call.”

“I will.”

And with that, Alice slips out again, as though she was never there. She does keep her word on staying away, for almost fifteen years, even, but one night, as she’s trying to escape a bad situation in another dimension, she slips through and winds up in an unfamiliar bedroom, looking down at a teenage boy with her daughter’s eyes looking very, very confused.

“Well shit,” she sights softly. “Your father’s going to kill me.”
