Seeley was not looking forward to dragging himself into consciousness. Considering he had spent the better half of the night puking up all the alcohol he had poured into himself following his break up with Hannah, he knew that this was going to hurt, and not just physically. He didn’t remember much of the night before but he knew that there was something important he was forgetting. Something really, really important.

He groaned as he pushed himself into a sitting position, running a hand over his face slowly. He needed to go. He needed to be at work. He needed to go back to doing what he did best. He needed to … realize that he wasn’t alone in his apartment, and there was someone standing in his bedroom doorway.

“Morning, sunshine.” He knew that she was whispering, but it still seemed so much louder than before. “How’re you feeling?”

“Like I got run over by a steam roller.” He slumped back into the bed, before looking over at her. “ … What are you doing here, Buffy?”

“Was in the neighborhood,” she said with a shrug, moving to sit next to him. “Ran into you and Temperance at the Founding Fathers—she seemed like she could use some help.”

He looked up at her through the darkness of the room—of course she remembered to close the curtains—and he still couldn’t believe she was actually there. He had been convinced that he was never going to see her again after Afghanistan, but there she was, sitting on the edge of his bed and looking at him like she was worried about him.

“What happened, Seeley?”

He shook his head, before looking away. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Okay,” she said, brushing her fingers through his hair. “Want me to make you something to eat?”

“Don’t—don’t even joke about that.”

She smirked, before her eyes softened again. “Want me to stay?”

He paused, considering that for a moment, before nodding. “Yeah. I do.”

“Okay.” She shifted, sliding into the bed next to him. He moved just enough to get an arm around her waist and pull her in closer, just taking the comfort of having someone there more than anything else. There was a pause as he closed his eyes, and then he mumbled against her skin.

“I’m glad you’re here.”

She rubbed a hand against his back and nodded. “Me too.”
