“So—who’s Fred again?”
“This girl I knew at Stanford.”
“And she called you when a demon painted crazy on her wall. So she knew—”
“She was studying the physics of the supernatural, Dean. It came up.”
“Uh-huh.” Dean followed his brother to the door of the hotel, looking around in confusion. “Are you sure that Ruby was the demon in question?”
“Yeah, Dean. I’m sure.”
“Okay.” This wasn’t shaping up to being the ideal job that Dean wanted to work at the moment, but his brother was determined to come to this girl’s aid, then who was he to stop him. He made his way into the lobby, and there was a small, lithe girl sitting on the couch, legs tucked under her and her nose in a book. Then he saw the smile that crossed his brother’s face and realized that yes, this was probably an entirely appropriate job to work.
“Fred?”
She looked up, and if it was possible for her any sunnier, she managed to do that when she smiled. “Sam!” She was up and across the room, throwing her arms around his neck. “Welcome to LA.”
“Thanks for having us,” he grinned as he pulled back. “You look really good.”
“So do you,” she nodded, pulling back to look at him. “Though … you’re less scrawny than I remember.”
Sam smirked, amused before replying. “Is that a bad thing?”
Her nose wrinkled. “Never said it was bad. Just different, is all.” She glanced over at Dean then, and gave him a wave. “Hi. I’m Fred.”
“Dean,” he nodded, waving back.
“Oh! You’re Sam’s brother!” She made her way closer to shake his hand. “I heard so much about you back at Stanford.”
“Really?”
“Oh yeah. You were all Sam would talk about sometimes. Seemed like you meant a lot to him.”
Dean glanced over at his brother and Sam shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. Dean just smirked, before heading towards the middle of the room. “Yeah, well—that goes both ways.”
“I’m sure.” Fred glanced back at Sam before moving towards the front desk. “Can I get you anything? Coffee? Something to eat?”
“Coffee would be great,” Dean nodded, and Sam agreed. Fred disappeared back behind the desk, and Dean smirked. “Now I see why you wanted to take this case.”
“Dude. Shut up.” Sam’s smile gave him away, though and Dean couldn’t help but smile himself.
It was starting to look like he had his brother back again, and Dean couldn’t be happier.
