The Braedens had a lake house up on Lake Michigan.

It had been in the family for years, and got passed around to whatever branch of the family was in need of it at the moment. It wasn’t a fancy place by any means—split level with a porch on the back—but it was big enough for what Lisa had in mind. They were all in need of a little escape and get away before they settled into their new life, and this house seemed like just the place to do it.

Lisa didn’t know what exactly it was that had driven Dean back in her direction from whatever it was that he felt he had to do, but she wasn’t going to lie and say that she wasn’t glad he did. She knew that she and Dean didn’t have much in the way of a relationship, but there was something there, and the fact that she meant enough to him that he felt he had to say goodbye was enough for her. She knew that his brother was dead, and that was something she couldn’t fix, but she could give him somewhere to run to, and that was better than turning him away or doing nothing at all. People would say that she probably shouldn’t trust him—that she was better off sending him away—but there was just a feeling in her gut that he had nowhere else to go. She didn’t think that anyone deserved to have nowhere else to go.

Dean was standing on the water’s edge, watching the sunset, and she almost doesn’t want to disturb him. He’s got that look on his face he gets sometimes—the one where he isn’t really there, but somewhere else—and she almost doesn’t want to disturb him. She doesn’t know where he goes when it happens, probably to Sam, but she also knows that if he stays there too long, she’ll lose him to a bottle of whiskey, and a drunk Dean wasn’t someone she wanted around her son. She made her way closer, sliding her arms around his waist from behind and pulling him back against her. It’s not much, but it’s enough to get him to glance back over his shoulder at her and give him a small smile.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” she said softly. “What’s going on up there?”

He gave her a bit of a smirk as he turned around to face her. “Nothing. Never is.”

She looked back at him for a moment, letting him loop his arms around her shoulders. She knew that there was something there, but instead of pushing things she just leaned in and kissed him softly. “Never nothing.”

He gave her a small smile at the kiss, before turning around so that he was standing behind her, arms wrapped tightly around her waist. She wasn’t sure if it was to try and keep her from reading him or if he was just more comfortable that way, but she just leaned back into him, letting him hold her. “You know,” he began softly. “I don’t think I’ve ever just watched the sunset before. Me and Sammy used to do stargazing sometimes, but other than that … never really looked at the sky much.”

“Maybe you should start,” she said softly. “Ben’s gotten to be a bit of an astronomy buff. He could probably teach you a few things.”

“Yeah?” he said, his shoulders shrugging a bit behind her. “Might be nice.”

She tipped her head back to look at him. “You’re his dad now. It’s something to focus on.”

“You still don’t know me that well. When I focus on something—”

“I’ll let you know if you’re going too far,” she said. “I promise.”

He leaned in to kiss her softly, slowly deepening it until she was turning around to face him again, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him closer. Dean may not be perfect, and he may not be everything she was expecting, but he was there, and that counted for more than anything else.
