Sam Winchester was dangerous.
It was as clear as day to her at least. She knew it from the minute she spotted him in the art gallery, looking at that seriously creepy portrait of the family that had been killed. There was something about him that screamed ‘run the other way’ but at the same time, there was just this reminder in his smile that she was perfectly safe and at ease. It was a dangerous combination to find in a boy, especially a smart one, and she couldn’t resist, even if she tried.
The thing was, mothers didn’t warn their girls about boys like Sam Winchester. Boys like his brother, Dean, maybe. Dean was your cocky typical boy who tended to think with his upstairs brain rather than his downstairs one, and the one where you really had to put effort into liking him as anything more than a friend—a friend with a rather consistent eye-roll reaction, but a friend nonetheless. Sam, however, was a totally different story. Sam was sweet, kind, courteous and respectful. He was every girl’s dream guy, wrapped up in a tall, muscular, rather good looking package and that in and of itself was what made him dangerous. Because Sam Winchester was the kind of boy you could fall for before you even got a chance to stop yourself, and that was never, ever a good sign.
Sarah stretched herself out against the blanket that they had spread out, tucking her arms behind her head as she looked up at the stars. Sam was stretched out next to her, and while she really could think of better things to do than star gazing, he wanted to do something a bit different that night, and she was more than happy to oblige, so long as it didn’t involve hunting or other people. (The last time Sam had suggested they do something different, they’d wound up assisting a drunk Dean out of a bar fight—well, Sam was doing the assisting, she was more egging them on. As much as she was proud that her boys had won, it wasn’t an experience she liked repeating.) Sam had worked it out, and now they were alone in the middle of no where, while Dean was off doing whatever it was Dean did. It was exactly what she wanted, and she really couldn’t ask for more than that.
“Big Dipper, Little Dipper,” he said softly, his finger connecting the dots between the different stars. “Orion. Taurus.”
“Very nice, Nostradamus,” she teased, before rolling over and curling up closer to him. Sam just smirked slightly, before sliding an arm around her shoulders.
“We spent a lot of nights on the road. I picked ‘em up pretty quickly.”
She gave a slight murmur of approval, before resting her chin on his chest and looking up at him. “So where did you go?”
She wanted to hear about the places he’s visited, the things he’s seen, but he usually shrugged it off, not wanting to share too many of the details. He wanted to keep the two of them separate, have something of his that’s normal, regular and not attached to the life he and his brother are forced to leave.
“Not far,” he replied with a shrug, his usual answer when it came to things like this. “Just a couple places here and there. Nothing special.”
She sighed softly, before rubbing her chest lightly. “I wish you would tell me what happens.”
“I don’t want you to worry about me.”
“Sam,” she sighed, propping her head up on her elbow before giving her a look. “I’m gonna worry about you regardless.”
“I know,” he said, before reaching over and tucking her hair behind her ear. “But I don’t want you to worry any more than you have to.”
She sighed heavily before rolling over back onto her back and looking back up at the stars again. “So where were we?”
He gave her a grin, before pointing back up again. “Ursa Major, Ursa Minor—”
