“Where are we going?”

Christina turned to him, tilting her head to the side curiously as they drove down the highway. He just gave her a grin, before shaking his head.

“Surprise.”

“I know,” she said innocently, before giving him a grin. “Still—figured it couldn’t hurt to ask.”

“Uh-huh,” he said skeptically, and she only grinned at him, before turning back to the window, looking out onto the road. It’d been a few dates since her impromptu confession in the middle of the FBI bullpen, and so far she hadn’t even gotten the first kiss yet. Well—technically the second kiss. He’d already kissed her back in New York. But still—she was looking for a real kiss. And it didn’t necessarily have to happen tonight, but—she was a bit impatient on occasion, and this happened to be one of them.

She watched the road as they drove, starting to wonder more as they got closer to the beach, and further away from the rest of civilization. She raised an eyebrow before turning back to him again. “Going to the beach?”

He didn’t say anything, just kept driving, and now she was starting to get frustrated. She should have figured this out by now. There was only so many things that were in this direction, and she was having a hard time narrowing them down because she just didn’t know him that well yet. She needed to think. And thinking was being distracted a bit by the sunset that was dropping down over the ocean outside her window.

“We don’t get sunsets like that in New York,” she said with a soft sigh.

“Don’t get them back in the Midwest either,” he commented.

“I know that,” she said with a sigh, giving him a look. “But—we don’t get sunsets on the water out in New York—ocean’s in the east.”

Colby just gave her a teasing grin, before he pulled into the parking lot near the beach and nodding towards the fire pits a bit of a way back from the shore line. He turned to look at her, and she watched him for a minute, before grinning and pushing open the door and making her way down to the sand.

About halfway down she kicked off her shoes, and looked back at him. “Which one’s ours?”

“The one with wood in it,” he said with a slight smirk, and she shot him another glare before settling into the sand. Colby moved to sit down next to her, reaching forward to light the pit in front of them before leaning back, bracing his hands behind him and tilting his head back to watch the stars.

“So this is your surprise?” she said with a smirk.

“Yeah,” he said, giving her a grin. “Pretty good, huh?”

“Impromptu trip to the beach?” she said, before turning back to look up again with a shrug. “It’s alright.”

“Just alright?” he said with a frown. “I’m thinking this was a pretty decent romantic gesture here.”

“Fire on the beach?” she teased. “So overdone, Granger. So overdone.”

He started giving her that kicked puppy look she hated, and she rolled her eyes before moving closer and slipping her arm around his, pulling him closer. He turned to face her in surprise, and she leaned in, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek as she stayed close.

“Ya did good, Colby.”

“Good.”
