It had been a long day for the two people left in the bar, even though technically it wasn’t even the same day anymore. It was getting close to three AM and the bar was shutting down, but she wasn’t kicking this guy out anytime soon. She could never kick Sam or Dean out at last call, and while that didn’t matter so much back at the Roadhouse, her bosses here weren’t so thrilled about it. So she usually made whoever was left behind help out. The boys were starting to expect it at this point, and when she made her way down the bar, and the familiar smirk

“Hey Sasquatch.” She waited until Sam turned to face her, before giving him a grin. “Need your help.”

If this was Dean, he would have complained, and Jo would have to reiterate how she was giving him free beer and a place to crash so it was the least he could do, but Sam never really complained. She didn’t know if this was still him trying to make up for what had happened when he was possessed, or he was really just that nice about things, but honestly, she wasn’t planning on questioning it too much. She wasn’t really one to complain, especially about when a person was, you know, not.

Sam just would give her a small smile and make his way behind the bar, waiting to be told what to do. He was pretty useful as well, being as tall as he was, so he could reach the high shelves she couldn’t without standing on something she could possibly kill herself by falling off of. She grabbed a box of bottles, before pointing up to one of the shelves above his head.

“Just stack ‘em up there with the rest of their kind,” Jo said with a sigh, before turning back to do other things. “And make sure they all match up, or the guy that uses that shelf will pitch a fit.”

He gave her a look. “This is all tequila.”

“He likes to separate by brand,” Jo sighed, rolling her eyes. “It matters, but it’s not that crucial. We do it just to humor him.”

“Gotcha,” he said with a nod, before turning back to what he was doing. She finished wiping down the rest of the bar a few minutes later, and putting the half-empty bottles away, when she turned back to see that he was almost finished. All that was left was one shelf she was sure even he couldn’t reach. She probably could, with a little bit of a boost, though.

“Hey—gimme a lift,” she replied, moving over behind him. He sighed heavily before crouching down slightly, helping to boost her onto his back. Once they steadied themselves, she reached for one of the bottles on the counter, and started to heave them onto the shelf above them.

“You got heavy,” he commented. She looked down before smacking the top of his head—hard.

“Just stay still and don’t drop me.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he grinned, before doing as she said. It was quiet between the two of them for a while, nothing but the clinking of the bottles as she went about her work. Eventually the quite was starting to stretch to awkward, and she decide that a little conversation may be in order.

“So—where’s your brother at?” Dean seemed like a safe enough topic to start off on. Sam probably would have preferred not to talk about Dean, but neutrality was the name of the game, especially with the way things were—or weren’t—left the last time he and Jo were alone together. Jo was going to avoid having that particular discussion for as long as she possible could, because she really didn’t want the awkward. She was too tired for that tonight. Tonight she just wanted a friend, and Sam—Sam Winchester, without the demon whore wearing his skin—was pretty good at being just that.

“He’s somewhere,” Sam shrugged. She could tell by the way he said ‘somewhere’ that he probably wanted to finish the sentence ‘somewhere getting laid’, but he didn’t. Whether it was out of respect for her, or just the fact that he didn’t want to think about it, she didn’t know, but she appreciated the fact that he didn’t say it anyway. He was always good that way.

“As usual,” she sighed, before feeling him start to wobble slightly. “Sam?”

“Sorry—losing my balance.”

“Need to put me down?”

“No, we’re almost finished.”

“Alright—but if you drop me, I’ll kick your ass.”

“Noted,” Sam smirked, before handing her the last couple bottles. Once they were into place, he backed up and placed her down on the counter, before turning around to face her. “Done.”

“Yup,” she grinned. “We make a pretty good team.”

“Yeah, we do,” Sam nodded, letting his hands rest on either side of her, and he was a bit closer than she had anticipated. Closer than he had been in a long time, and at first it was a bit—uncomfortable. Some things time had already fixed, and some things time couldn’t fix quite as quickly. He was still Sam, though. Big, strong, ever reliable Sam who wouldn’t hurt a fly unless he was possessed by some form of hell spawn, and she had to figure that he had learned his lesson there the first time.

However, that doesn’t mean that he can’t remember what happened, and he started to back away from her. “Sorry—I didn’t mean to—”

“You didn’t do anything, Sam,” she said shaking her head, and grabbing his hand. “Really—we’re okay.”

“I know, I just—” Sam turned away from her for a minute. “—I don’t want to make you—”

“Sam,” she sighed, giving him a look. “If I didn’t want you around, you’d know it, alright?” He turned back at her, and she gave him a small smile. “We’re okay.”

“Okay,” he said, before turning back to her and giving her a smile. “I think.”

“Okay,” she said, before giving him a grin and reaching for the tap. “Want another beer for your hard work?”

“Yeah, I think my back’s gonna need it.”

“If that’s another crack about my weight,” she said as she popped the tops off two beers. “It’s gonna be more than your back that you’re complaining about, Winchester.” Sam just grinned before taking the beer from her, and Jo relaxed again, before her boss yelled at her to get her ass of his bar and she turned back to him as she hopped off. “Wanna get out of here?”

“Yeah, let’s go,” he chuckled, before following her out of the bar.
