Flack let out a low whistle as he made his way into the room, looking at the crime scene photos that were scattered around the layout table in the middle of the room. Each photo seemed to hold a different face, and each one had been brutally slain, some of the most gruesome deaths he’d seen, and he’d been on the job a long time. He turned his eyes to Stella as he went in and frowned slightly.
“What kind of case are you guys working?”
Stella looked up at him and raised an eyebrow, before shaking her head. “Serial killer from Vegas managed to make his way out to the city, and then got killed here. Aren’t you supposed to be in Miami?”
“They wouldn’t have me,” he smirked. “It looks like you’ve got a lot of people with motive here. Have fun with that.”
“Well—half of them have alibis already, but there are still some we have to track down,” she sighed. “Plus we’ve been gifted with some CSIs from Vegas to help us out, so it’s not as much work as we anticipated.”
“That’s good,” he nodded.
“So what’re you doing here, Flack?” she said, giving him an amused smirk. “Home just that boring.”
“I swear, Stell—I’m climbing the walls,” he said, shaking his head. “I can’t go on vacation without getting shot at, I’m not allowed to come back to work—I don’t know what to do with myself.”
“You should get a hobby,” Stella smirked. “Maybe take up knitting.”
“Eh, I don’t think so,” he grinned. “Don’t really have the hands for it.”
She grinned back at him before another voice spoke up. “Stella, I—” A dark haired man with a slightly cowboy twang to his voice began as he came into the room. He spotted Flack and frowned at him for a minute, before stopping. “—am I interrupting something?”
“Oh, no,” Stella sighed, shaking her head. “This is Detective Flack, he’s one of our homicide detectives, but he’s currently on medical leave at the moment. Flack, this is Nick Stokes—he’s one of the CSIs from Vegas.”
“How ya doin’?” Flack sighed as he extended his hand to the other man.
“Nice to meet you,” Nick nodded as he shook his hand, before giving the man a friendly smile. “Come by to see what you’re missing?”
“Once it’s in your blood, you can’t get it out,” Flack said with a grin. He glanced between the two of them for a moment, before jerking his thumb back over his shoulder. “I’m gonna see who else is around. I’ll talk to you later Stella.”
“Good to see you, Flack,” she said with a smile, before turning back to the evidence. It was quiet for a moment, before Nick looked up and over at her again.
“He seems like a nice guy.”
“Oh, Flack’s great,” Stella said with a nod. “Don’t know how we’re managing without him.”
She moved over to the other end of the table, and he watched her for a minute, before speaking up. “You two seem pretty close.”
“We’ve been friends a long time,” Stella nodded, before looking up at him and giving him an amused smirk. “Why do you ask?”
Nick laughed slightly, before shaking his head. “Just—curious.”
“Curious about my relationships with my coworkers?”
“I like to get to know the people I’m working with,” he said slowly. “That’s all.”
“Uh-huh,” she said, continuing to smirk, and Nick looked up at her before rolling his eyes slightly.
“Can we just focus on the case please?”
“Sure,” Stella grinned. “Case it is.” She turned back to the photos on the wall, shaking her head as she looked over them, speaking up again as Nick moved to stand next to her. “You know—monsters like this I have a hard time feeling bad for.”
“You and me both,” he said with a heavy sigh. “But that’s the job, isn’t it?”
She turned to look at him with a nod. “Yup, that’s the job.”
