Lupo/Cassady - New Faces in Old Places
*hates her brain* There may/may not be Cutter/Rubirosa fic tomorrow. Just to get them to shut up.
Fandom: Law and Order (TOS)/CSI:NY
Title: New Faces in Old Places
Author:
iluvroadrunner6
Rating: FRT
Characters: Cyrus Lupo/Nina Cassady
Content Warning: Spoilers for 1801: Called Home/Darkness.
Summary: Nina has to pop by the 2-7 to get something she left behind.
Author's Note: Only really an CSI:NY crossover for mentions of Danny Messer. Otherwise, it's purely L&O, and it will make more sense if you've read Detective Beauty Queen.
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Law and Order or CSI:NY. They're owned by CBS and NBC. However, any and all original characters are mine, so please do not use them without my permission.
It was supposed to be a quick in and out. Run in, raid her now-empty desk for the handmade toy she was kicking herself for leaving behind, and head out again. She didn’t have to talk anyone, didn’t have to see anyone—especially the Lieu or Green—and no one even had to realize she was there. It would be easy. The two-seven was always too full of people anyway.
“All you have to do is get in and get out,” she said softly as she pulled open the door. “Boom. Done.”
She hesitated slightly and closed her eyes. No, Cassady, you did not just say ‘boom’. She really had to stop spending time with Messer. She took a deep breath and shook the thoughts from her mind, before making her way inside, and breezing past everyone she ran into.
Getting in and out didn’t run as smoothly as she had hopped, however. From the moment she walked into the far end of the bullpen, there was a catcall coming her way, and she had to stop, smile, and pretend like she didn’t feel she had been kicked out on her ass. “Hey, Mahoney.”
“Hey there, Cassady. You look good.”
“You don’t look half-bad there yourself.”
“Looks like the lab’s been good to ya.”
She shrugged. “It works for me.”
“Messer’s gettin’ on your case?”
She shrugged again. “I know howta keep him in line. We’re doin’ alright.”
“Sounds like it. What’re you doin’ down here anyway?”
“Left somethin’ in my desk, wanted to see if it was still there,” she sighed, starting to move in that direction again. “Figured it’s probably still empty if Green’s still on his ‘I hate working with a partner’ kick.”
“And you would figure wrong,” Mahoney replied, pointing to the man who was sitting at Nina’s desk. “Just got saddled with him a few days ago.”
Nina looked over, staring at the guy sitting in what used to be her seat and trying not to be bitter about it. Really trying. Yeah, her boobs totally weren’t an issue in their partnership at all. It really wasn’t because she wasn’t Lennie Briscoe, or Joe Fontana. And she wasn’t bitter. Not one bit.
Well, not much.
She sighed heavily before shrugging. “I’ll deal. I’ll see you around, alright.”
“Sure thing, girlie. See ya around.”
She slowly made her way over to his desk, studying him as she did, trying to place the face, the mannerisms, searching for something familiar to ID the guy but getting nothing. She eventually gave up with a sigh, and figured she’d just use her charms to get in and out as quickly as possible. Shouldn’t be too hard. She hadn’t met a man in the department who hadn’t ogled her ass at least once, so at least she’d be getting it over with while he was relatively new, instead of it being awkward—and possibly involving Green—later.
She tapped him lightly on the shoulder, and he turned around, looking up at her in confusion, and for once, surprisingly, his eyes didn’t make a brief stop around chest level. That set her off a bit, but she tried not to show it as he spoke up.
“Can I help you?”
“Hi,” she sighed. “I’m Detective Cassady. This—used to be my desk.”
“Oh?” he said slowly, his voice turning up just slightly at the end, so it wasn’t so much a question, and more of a statement that matched the ‘why the hell are you standing here?’ look he was giving her. She shifted slightly, running a hand through her hair as she continued.
“I was just—when you were moving in, did you find a—?” she stopped when she found that he was holding up the toy in question in front of her. She took it from him, before giving him an awkward smile. “—oh. There ya go.”
He returned the smile, and it was just as awkward. “My nephew found it in one of the drawers.”
“My nephew made it,” she smirked. He looked down at the toy, and then back up at her.
“He’s—quite the artist?” There it was, the slight turn up at the end of his sentence again, and this time it was more as though he didn’t know what to say, because he didn’t want to offend, but he didn’t really mean it. Nina just grinned.
“He’s also just turning three.”
His face relaxed more, and the smile this time was less awkward. “Then he really is an artistic prodigy.”
Nina laughed, and shook her head. “Don’t tell my brother that, or the poor kid’ll be in art classes before he even realizes it.”
“And that would be a bad thing?”
“My brother has this thing for sticking his kids into things before he even realizes if they enjoy them. It’s a habit me and his wife are trying to break.”
“I see,” he nodded slowly. She hesitated for a minute, before nodding towards the other empty desk.
“So—you’re Green’s new partner, huh?”
“That’s what she tells me,” he said with a nod, glancing down at his paperwork again.
Nina nodded. “Where were you working before?”
“Intel, overseas.”
“Oh,” Nina said slowly. “Gotcha.” She paused again, not really sure what to follow that up with. “Green’s a good partner. Knows how to watch your back.”
“Good to know,” he nodded slowly. His eyes were on his paperwork, and there was another long silence, before she moved her hand down, rapping her knuckles lightly on the edge of her desk.
“Well, it was nice meeting you—”
“Lupo,” he said slowly, holding out his hand to her. “Cyrus Lupo.” She nodded slowly as she shook his hand, before pulling back and walking behind him.
“Nice meeting you, Lupo. Good luck.”
“Thanks,” he nodded.
She gave him a final wave before heading out of the precinct, and not letting go of the breath she had been holding until she felt the sunlight on her face. She knew he had watched her the entire way out, and she still wasn’t quite sure what to make if it, but as far as she was concerned—trips to the two-seven were going to be a lot more awkward than she had thought.

Anna: *still snickering* Y'know, maybe I won't ask Beretti to take my spot as liaison. This could be wayyyy too much fun to pass up.
