Christina watched through the window as she stood next to David. She hadn’t said anything to him aside from the normal hellos and how are yous. She could see Colby lying in the hospital bed through the window, and she knew that as the dutiful girlfriend she should be in there with him, but she was still so torn in two after what had happened. For five weeks she thought the guy she was in love with was a traitor, and now all of the sudden they’re telling her he’s not. She didn’t know what she was supposed to believe, and true, she had been in New York for most of this, but it still hurt just the same.
David let her stand in silence for a minute before turning to look at her. “The doctor said he’s going to make a full recovery.”
“Magic of modern medicine,” she sighed, not turning to look at him, and just watching Colby. She hesitated for a minute—he could see the beginnings of the words on her lips as she paused before she said them. “Have you been in there yet?”
“No,” he said, shaking his head. “I’m still—trying to process things.” He paused himself for a minute, before looking back at her. “Are you going to go in there?”
“I haven’t decided yet,” she said, still not taking her eyes from the man in the bed.
“What’s holding you back?”
She turned to him, the slightest hint of a smile on her lips. “Probably the same thing that’s holding you.”
He nodded back slowly, watching her as she watched Colby. They sat there for a while, and she froze when she saw his head pick up and a pair of eyes blink open, looking at her from the other side. Her hand tentatively brushed against the glass, chewing on her lip as she stood in front of the window. She could tell by the look on his face that he was begging with her, pleading for her to come inside, but she wasn’t sure if she could. She just couldn’t will her feet to move.
“I can’t do this,” she sighed. “I want to go in there but I can’t.”
David didn’t say anything, just watched her as she watched Colby watching her. He had to admit, it was hard seeing her react this way. She and Colby had always had an easy relationship, and now this was just making everything more complicated.
She closed her eyes after a minute, before mouthing ‘I’m sorry.’ After that, she slowly started to walk away, trying not to see the crushed look on his face as she did.

She didn’t want to leave him there like that. At least, she hoped she didn’t. She still had feelings for Colby, despite this whole thing but he had just turned her entire world upside down. She had thought things were getting serious. She was considering moving to him, maybe, or talking to him about moving out here. And now—she didn’t know what to think. She was going to wait for him to contact her, and give herself a little time to adjust to the idea. It was a few weeks before she heard from him, and it wasn’t in the way she expected either.
He was sitting on the front steps of her building. She doesn’t know for how long he was waiting or when he had flown in, but that all didn’t really matter because he was there, and she didn’t know why. She took a few deep breaths, trying to find exactly what to say without sounding too tactless when she said it.
“Colby—what are you doing here?” she said, too surprised to come up with anything else.
“I had some time off, you wouldn’t answer my calls—”
“I told you, I needed some time.”
“I know,” he said, rubbing his eyes. “Everybody needs fuckin’ time.”
She could see the frustration in his shoulders and the strain in his voice, and she didn’t know what to do for him. She didn’t know what to say that would still be the truth and would make him feel better. She knew that he didn’t ask for this, or make the choice to do this, but those five weeks he spent in jail just weren’t going to disappear, no matter how much they wanted them too.
“Colby—” she sighed, placing a hand on her forehead, supporting her elbow with the opposite hand. “I just—I need to figure things out, OK? I mean—how do I know you’re still the same person?”
He looked up at her, playing with his hands while he tried to come up with an answer. “I never was a different person to begin with, Chris. I swear.”
She could see the sincerity in his eyes, but she knew that someone who was fooling one of his best friends for the longest time could easily fool her, who she wasn’t sure she knew at all. She took a deep breath, before turning and reaching for his hand.
“Come upstairs and have a cup of coffee with me.”
“What?”
“You flew all this way, least I could do is let you have a cup of coffee.” She sighed slightly, before squeezing his hand. “And you can try and convince me that you’re still the same guy.”
“How are you going to know I’m not lying to you?” he asked, looking up at her, and she hesitated slightly before responding.
“Guess I’m just going to have to trust you, right?” she said, meeting his gaze for the first time in a while.
“Guess so,” he nodded, the faintest hint of a smile crossing his lips as he got up and followed her back into her building.
