It was only a few hours earlier when he had been facing the cameras and explaining the details of what had gone down. The other detectives were teasing him whenever they saw him—especially the older ones who knew his father. Said he was looking a bit too stiff on camera, asking him what happened to the Flack family charm. He brushed them off with a smile, knowing that was their way of saying he had done damn good today. And he had. He had done very damn good.

He reasons that things could have gone better—he had had to shoot one too many men for his liking, but he wasn’t going to complain. Hawkes was right—if he hadn’t shot him, he would have been shot instead. And after what had happened last year, he had had enough physical therapy and hospital stays to last him a lifetime. That, and the guy could have killed him—and he wasn’t that fond of being dead at this point. So he shot first. He regretted later—which was a good thing—but he shot first.

This was probably the biggest bust he’d ever organized and he was pretty damn pleased with himself. For the first time in a long time, he felt as though the older detectives who didn’t know him were finally seeing him stand on his own two feet, rather than on the shoulders of his hero-cop father. That thought, in and of itself, felt better to him than the fact that he had just brought down a very nice chunk of the Irish mob, and took a lot of their drugs with him.

He was on cloud nine until he picked up that phone, and heard Danny’s shaky voice on the other end:

“We’ve got a situation, man…”
